Overlord: Rise of the Demon God

Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Gamble of Fortune

Kael sat cross-legged in deep thought. The weight of 45,000 EXP lingered in his mind, tempting him with the promise of power. He could have used it to push himself closer to level 50, but instead, he was drawn to the lottery system.

This was his second time testing his luck. His first attempt had yielded some decent rewards, but also a pile of useless warrior equipment. This time, he wanted to see if fortune favored him or if the system simply enjoyed mocking him.

"System," he commanded, his voice steady. "Let's start small. Ten 10-EXP draws."

[Processing…]

A soft hum echoed through the air as ten glowing orbs materialized before him, each swirling with a faint golden light. Slowly, the orbs unraveled, revealing the rewards within.

Kael's expression didn't change as he saw what he had received.

Legacy-class warrior equipment.

Not one. Not two. All ten.

A deep sigh escaped him. "Of course. Why do I even bother?"

The system remained silent, as if silently mocking him.

He examined the items—a finely crafted warrior's greaves, an ornate longsword, a shield lined with intricate engravings. All of them were remarkable pieces of equipment, but utterly useless to him as a magic caster.

"These would be treasures for others," he muttered. "But for me, they're just expensive decorations."

Without hesitation, he stored them in his system space. At the very least, they held value. He could sell or trade them in the future, assuming he found someone worthy of such artifacts.

Kael exhaled slowly, debating his next move. He was tempted to draw again, but with a higher cost.

"Let's go bigger. Ten 1,000-EXP draws."

[Processing…]

The moment he made the command, the air around him grew heavy. A deep, resonating chime echoed in the void of the system, followed by a brilliant flash of golden energy.

This time, the orbs that formed were significantly larger. They pulsed with power, a faint hum of energy reverberating around him.

As the light dimmed, Kael carefully observed the rewards.

The first five items instantly soured his mood.

Legendary-tier warrior equipment.

Kael's face remained unreadable, but internally, he was seething.

"Why does the system seem so intent on giving me weapons and armor I can't use?"

Yet, just as frustration threatened to surface, he noticed something different among the remaining rewards.

Four delicate scrolls floated before him, shimmering faintly with a mystical glow.

[Level-Up Scroll: Increases user's level by 1 upon use. Cannot be used after level 100.]

Kael's expression eased. Finally, something useful.

He reached forward, grabbing the scrolls and immediately storing them away. They would prove invaluable later.

However, one last reward caught his attention.

A single magic scroll hovered before him, exuding an aura of immense power. Unlike normal scrolls, this one had a metallic sheen, its surface engraved with complex runes that seemed to shift and morph.

[One-Time Use 10th-Tier Magic Scroll: Terra Reformation]

Kael's gaze sharpened as he read the description.

A spell capable of reshaping terrain to the user's will.

"This…" he murmured, running his fingers over the scroll's surface.

It wasn't an offensive spell, nor did it summon destructive forces. Instead, it allowed him to manipulate the very land itself.

He could raise mountains, create barriers, drain entire lakes, or even fortify a battlefield to his advantage.

"This is no ordinary magic," he mused. With proper use, this spell could change the course of a war.

Satisfied, he stored it away.

Kael leaned back slightly, contemplating his next move. His luck hadn't been bad, but he still hadn't gotten anything truly groundbreaking.

His eyes narrowed. "One more round."

"System, ten more 1,000-EXP draws."

[Processing…]

The golden glow appeared once more, this time with a familiar sense of mockery.

As the rewards unveiled themselves, Kael's shoulders sagged slightly.

Eight Legacy-class warrior items.

His expression remained calm, but internally, he was done.

"This system is enjoying this too much," he muttered.

However, among the useless pile of warrior gear, he spotted two more scrolls.

[Level-Up Scroll: Increases user's level by 1 upon use.]

That brought his total to six newly obtained Level-Up Scrolls, in addition to the three he already had.

Kael exhaled, rubbing his temples. "Alright, I think my luck has run out."

He took a moment to assess his gains.

Nine Level-Up Scrolls, a powerful terrain-altering spell, and a bunch of warrior gear that was practically junk to him.

His eyes drifted toward the remaining EXP.

24,900.

He still had plenty to use for leveling.

His fingers tapped against his arm as he weighed his options.

Only five levels away from reaching level 50.

At that threshold, he would unlock a powerful new skill, and every step closer to level 100 brought him closer to true power.

His gaze lingered on the scrolls stored in his inventory.

With just five of them, he could instantly reach level 50.

Tempting.

But something in his mind urged him to wait.

"Not yet," he muttered. "I'll decide in the next chapter."

For now, he closed his inventory and let the anticipation build.
