OVERLORD: The Second Supreme Being

Chapter 150: Chapter 149: The Second Personality

Keralt's current race is a succubus, a type of demon, and demons are inherently associated with evil thoughts. However, her heart is exceptionally kind. Yet, when faced with the curses and stone-throwing of the ignorant citizens of the Holy Kingdom, even her strong will began to waver.

As the only person in the Holy Kingdom who knew the truth, she bore an immense burden. At this moment, all that pressure had concentrated in her heart.

As for Keralt, she had completely fallen. The path she chose was one that no one could accompany her on.

Calca had always been her motivation to move forward, but now she was lost. Everything she had done was clearly for the sake of the very citizens of the Holy Kingdom standing before her.

But instead of gratitude, they cursed her, told her to die, and pelted her with stones.

The flames only caused her physical pain, but the citizens of the Holy Kingdom inflicted a deep wound upon her spirit.

Injustice, anger, and unwillingness—these emotions merged into a storm within her.

"Look at these ignorant people. Why not kill them all? With your current strength, you could easily break free from this ridiculous iron cross, escape the flames, and slaughter them," the voice said.

It sounded like Yulia's voice, but Keralt looked around and saw no sign of Yulia.

"Why should you endure such humiliation? Kill them all and let them learn the cost of insulting someone strong," the voice spoke again.

"Who are you?" Keralt shouted.

But the voice did not answer her.

"Who am I? Isn't the person who knows that best... you?" After a long silence, the voice spoke once more.

This time, the voice changed—it became the voice of Keralt's elder sister, Remedios.

"How would I know?" Keralt was utterly baffled by what the voice was saying.

"Is that so?" The voice shifted slightly.

"Do you really not know?" At this moment, the voice became identical to Keralt's own.

"This voice... it's my voice..." Keralt was stunned.

After that, the voice spoke no more.

The flames continued to burn Keralt's body.

During this time, people kept adding firewood. Yulia had previously told them that it would take seven days and nights to completely burn the succubus, Keralt, to death.

Anything Yulia said, the citizens of the Holy Kingdom would believe. After all, Yulia was their hero, the one who led the Holy Kingdom to defeat the demihuman army.

Her contributions were unparalleled.

The flames continued to burn Keralt for 24 hours. During this time, the people cursing her came in wave after wave.

"Look at that spiteful wretch who keeps hurling insults at you. Too cowardly to step onto the battlefield, she vents all her anger on you. Why not kill her?" The voice echoed once more.

"No, she's an unarmed civilian. The strong must not bully the weak," Keralt responded inwardly.

By now, Keralt had realized the source of the voice.

"Then are you just going to let her insult you freely? You've done nothing wrong, yet you're subjected to the cruelest treatment."

Keralt remained silent, but the voice spoke again.

"Be thankful that you still have power. If not for the strength granted to you by Peroroncino, you would already be dead."

"I would rather not have this power. Living like this is worse than dying," Keralt said aloud.

"Then just die! Why, when your mind couldn't handle the pressure of the outside world, did your brain gather all the negative emotions and create me?

Why should I endure endless suffering? If you don't want to live, then die! Let your body fall under my control," the voice snapped back.

Suddenly, Keralt felt her eyes grow heavy, an overwhelming urge to sleep washing over her.

But she resisted the drowsiness with sheer willpower.

She understood very clearly that if she fell asleep, her second personality would take over and unleash a rampage.

The human brain is a fascinating organ. Keralt's psyche had already reached its breaking point. If she went beyond that threshold, she would succumb to the pressure and die suddenly.

To protect Keralt's consciousness, her brain had created a second personality—a new entity to bear all the negative emotions.

Keralt resisted the attacks of her second personality with sheer willpower.

"Wouldn't it be better to just kill them? Out of the millions of humans in the Holy Kingdom, losing one or two doesn't really matter, does it?"

Keralt ignored the second personality.

"Look at those citizens of the Holy Kingdom, with their hateful expressions. If you were to kill one of them, would they beg for mercy?"

The second personality continued whispering in Keralt's ear.

On top of that, the flames constantly stimulated her nerves, pushing her closer to the edge.

Keralt felt so tired, so desperately wanting to sleep, but she held on with her willpower.

By the time three days and nights had passed in the flames, Keralt felt her resolve nearing its limit.

At this moment, Keralt could no longer hear the voice of the second personality.

However, as she looked at the person adding more firewood, a thought crossed her mind—how much she wanted to twist that person's head off and kick it like a ball.

Keralt's gaze shifted to a group of children nearby, throwing stones at her.

She felt an overwhelming urge to walk over to them and play a game of hide-and-seek.

Of course, whoever got caught, Keralt thought, she would kindly borrow their heart to see what color it was.

Shaking her head vigorously, she tried to dispel such thoughts.

Then she saw a man passing by. Without hesitation, he picked up a fist-sized stone and hurled it at her.

In a sudden burst of strength, Keralt broke free with one hand from the chains binding her arms and caught the stone mid-air.

In the next moment, she calmed down. If her reaction had been a fraction slower, she would have thrown the stone back and pierced straight through the man's head.

Seeing her catch the stone, the man fled in terror.

"I need to get out of here, or I'll definitely end up killing someone," Keralt thought to herself.

Keralt broke free from the chains binding her body and stepped down from the iron cross.

She slowly walked out of the flames.

The person adding firewood saw Keralt breaking free and immediately turned to flee.

Just as Keralt was about to leave, a sword suddenly pierced her body from behind, running straight through the center of her torso.

Although it didn't hit her heart, without treatment, death was inevitable within five minutes.

Keralt turned her head and saw the vicious expression of Remedios.

At that moment, the last shred of Keralt's kind will completely vanished.

"Thank you, my dear sister!"

Keralt's gaze changed, her eyes filled with a twisted kind of affection as she looked at Remedios.

"You're welcome," Remedios replied, withdrawing the holy sword.

Remedios thought Keralt's "thank you" was because she believed she had freed her from suffering.

Before this, Remedios had sought out the best blacksmith in the Holy Kingdom to repair the holy sword. Although it was restored, its power was greatly diminished. Still, it was more than enough to kill Keralt.

"Sister, how should I repay you?" Keralt asked, blood streaming from her chest, her expression adorned with a smile as she looked at Remedios.

"This is my duty; there's no need for you to repay me," Remedios replied, puzzled as to why Keralt mentioned repaying her but firmly refusing any notion of repayment.

"Then let me tell you a secret—Queen Calca is still alive," Keralt said nonchalantly.

"What did you say? Where is Calca?" Remedios tried to grab Keralt's arms to question her further.

But Keralt evaded her grasp.

Keralt cast a healing spell, the only healing magic she knew.

"Such serious wounds can't be healed with just group healing."

Keralt's magic was very blue-intensive, and after using it five times, she would run out of mana. To fully heal her injuries, at least ten uses would be required.

But this was the maximum number of times Keralt could cast the spell in Remedios' memory.

After Peroroncino had changed Keralt's class, her magic had been greatly enhanced, and she could now cast the spell ten times.

Remedios simply watched Keralt struggle in her dying state.

It wasn't until Keralt began casting the seventh group healing that Remedios noticed something was wrong.

She attempted to attack Keralt,

but Keralt skillfully dodged.

The two of them engaged in an intense chase, but Remedios was never able to land a single hit on Keralt.

In the end, she could only watch as Keralt healed her wounds and escaped.
