Overlord: Welcome the Birth of the King

Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Ten Days! Reaching the Peak of "Sword Saint"

Day Two.

Rustle... rustle...

The sound of leaves brushing against each other echoed softly through the forest as the morning breeze swept by.

Lyle rested one leg on a thick tree branch and leaned against the sturdy trunk. He opened his eyes and pulled out a pocket watch, flipping it open.

"It's 8:07 AM. I wonder if time in this world works exactly the same as in my past life." Lyle closed the watch again and looked up toward the forest that still exuded an eerie gloom.

Despite the sun having risen, the dense canopy above let only minimal sunlight filter through, casting long shadows across the forest floor.

Compared to nighttime, the visibility was indeed much better.

Lyle had been awake for some time. To be precise, he hadn't truly slept through the night—his rest had been a state of half-sleep. Perhaps this was due to his increased physical attributes following his level progression.

Even though he had barely slept, he felt neither tired nor lethargic.

If not for the forest's poor visibility, he would have acted sooner.

Suddenly—Whoa!

Lyle lost his balance while sitting on the branch and fell from the tree.

Thud!

He adjusted his landing stance mid-air, landing smoothly on both feet.

"Time to begin."

Gripping his iron sword tightly, he muttered to himself with a calm expression.

Upon fully entering the troll territory, Lyle encountered an increasing number of goblins. As a result, many goblins fell to his blade, turning into valuable experience points.

One day.

Two days.

...

Four days.

Throughout these days, Lyle had faced and defeated hundreds of various types of monsters, including both wild beasts and lesser creatures.

His "Sword Saint" class had leveled up once more, reaching Level 9.

Despite the seemingly large number of goblins slain, it was only a fraction of what the vast Forest of Tob contained. The forest spanned a massive area, and Lyle's kills each day averaged around twenty goblins.

Thus, in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't much.

Additionally, Lyle discovered that not all goblins lived in large groups. Many existed in small clusters, hunting and surviving together.

Lyle didn't lack motivation—in fact, he had been doing everything possible to hunt down more monsters. However, the dense forest environment posed significant limitations.

For about thirteen hours each day, the forest was shrouded in darkness. For a human like Lyle, this was a significant disadvantage. Goblins, on the other hand, possessed a racial trait—night vision—allowing them to hunt effortlessly at night.

As a result, hunting at night was highly impractical for Lyle. The thick forest also restricted his movement, limiting his hunting range. This naturally slowed down his progress.

Over the next few days, Lyle's daily life became monotonous—either hunting monsters or traveling to find more targets.

If he was fortunate enough, he would occasionally come across an ogre. And where there was an ogre, there was usually a goblin settlement nearby.

As time went by, Lyle's presence began to influence the ecosystem. Unbeknownst to him, the stench of blood from the countless goblin corpses he left behind was spreading across the outskirts of the forest.

This odor did not attract predators; instead, many wild animals began fleeing toward the deeper parts of the forest, terrified by the new apex predator that had arrived.

By June 11, It had been ten days since Lyle entered the Forest of Tob on the second of the month.

At a small goblin settlement, chaos reigned.

"Gyaaah!"

"Scree—!"

"...!"

The goblins' shrill cries filled the air as Lyle methodically swung his iron sword, its gleaming blade flashing with each strike.

Whether it was due to the sheer number of goblins he had slain or his increased proficiency from leveling up as a "Sword Saint," Lyle's swordsmanship had become exceptionally sharp.

With a swift kick, he sent a goblin flying into several others attempting to flee. In just a few steps, he caught up with them. His sword trembled briefly before slashing out.

Several goblin heads flew into the air before crashing to the ground.

After a short period, the entire goblin settlement had been wiped out. As usual, Lyle began cutting off the goblins' ears, storing them in a pouch before placing it into his inventory.

Gulp... gulp...

He took several gulps from his water flask, exhaling deeply afterward.

Ignoring the scattered corpses and the metallic scent of blood in the air, Lyle pulled out a piece of roasted boar meat and took a hearty bite.

"Another small goblin settlement, and no ogre? What a waste."

Chewing on the meat, Lyle's thoughts wandered. The pile of goblin bodies around him didn't bother him at all—he had grown accustomed to the forest's harsh environment.

Settling down, he placed his iron sword by his side, holding the water flask in one hand and the roasted meat in the other. He needed to replenish his strength and rest for a while.

The wild boar he had hunted a few days ago had been roasted using his "Heating" spell. After cutting it into portions, he stored the meat in his inventory for easy access.

From a distance, Lyle resembled a wild man. His sturdy linen clothes had become tattered, with leaves and branches clinging to them. His once short black hair had grown longer, now appearing unkempt and messy.

This was already the fifth set of clothes he had worn; the previous ones were even more worn out than his current outfit. Without the "Odorless" spell, he would likely reek of sweat and grime by now.

However, beneath his torn clothing and exposed skin, it was clear that his physique had undergone significant changes. His muscles had become more defined, his entire body radiating a sense of strength.

"Status panel," Lyle murmured internally.
