Chapter 189 A Mountain of Deceptions
The moment that Grito entered the courtroom, every single one of the defendants on trial glared at him.
While none of them would ever openly admit to being aligned with the Odium Syndicate, there was absolutely no doubt that the Dramid Alliance had rounded up several of their high-ranking collaborators.
Every single one of them knew who Grito was and why he was here.
He was a traitor intent on selling them all out for his own personal gain. He would be absolved of any of the crimes he committed while working for the Odium Syndicate and gain the favor of the Dramid Alliance.
Normally it would have been impossible for someone of his former position within the organization to have gathered any important intelligence on them, but the Odium Syndicate had given him too much freedom and control on account of his contributions.
Grtio had introduced dozens of technological innovations that had assisted with smuggling and distribution of the drug that the Odium Syndicate was peddling throughout the Dramid Alliance. Both as a means to raise cpatial and weaken the populous of an enemy.
Of course, he never did these things under orders and seemed to upgrade random ships he was working on simply because he enjoyed doing so.
Still, this had gained him respect and attention from the higher-ups in the organization. They figured that only someone loyal to them would show such initiative.
Yet the moment the opportunity presented itself, Grito made a break for it. Stealing a ship filled with valuable equipment, after having forcefully accessed the Odium Syndicate's central data network.
He had managed to learn far too much, and they had pursued him relentlessly. Unfortunately, the Odium Syndicate's efforts had proven to be in vain so far.
'But today will be different. We've finally got that traitor where we want him. I've had everything laid out perfectly. Now all I need to do is wait for the pieces to fall into place.' Senator Fena thought, hardly perturbed by the information Grito knew.
As soon as he sat down on the witness stand, Fargus sent a signal to all of the agents hidden within the courthouse and outside of it. Finally, it was time to capitalize on everything they had painstakingly set up.
A couple more minutes went by silently, while the prosecutor pandered to the jury and started to build up his case. He was almost certainly just seconds away from asking Grito to identify Senator Fena and her other co-conspirators and explain how he knew this information.
Except, before that could happen, an alarm started ringing through the room.
It took an extreme amount of control for Senator Fena, and Fargus sitting just behind her, to not start smiling when this happened.
Instead, they forced surprised and concerned expressions onto their faces to match the rest of the people in the room.
Once the initial shock began to wear off, the court bailiffs and the added security that had been brought in on account of the protests and recent attack on the Alliance Courthouse moved into action.
They started directing people to get up and head towards the nearest designated security room where they would be protected.
'The protesters must have stormed the building. Now all we need to wait for the majority of the courthouse's guards to be forced to respond, and then the assets that I've pianistically planted here will spring into action.'
Fargus' lips turned up into a grin as he thought about how well things were going.
While every tiny incident he had caused proceeding this day were not consequential, a few of them were.
By being able to cause an emergency shutdown of a nearby city's transit system, he had prevented several key individuals from being able to come into work today. The propagation of minor diseases had also served this function. Forcing the court to bring in more temporary staff to cover the shortage. Some of which were agents that worked for Fargus that had slipped in.
As for infesting the produce of a certain company with insects, that had been done in order to prevent them from making their usual deliveries to the courthouse's cafeteria.
Lossing out on the major shipment, and a few other small harassments that Fargus had cooked up had staggered the company. Forcing the court to receive their most recent shipment of food from another source. One that Fargus had a connections in.
The boxes that had been used to carry and store the perishable items were in reality dismantlable and would serve as parts for electromagnetic weapons.
It had been no easy task to finally figure out a way to circumvent the courthouse's security scans, but after bit of trail and error, Fargus had done it.
So long as what was being scanned could not be perceived as a weapon, or was not an obvious part of one, then it would not cause any alarm.
That had forced Fargus to come up with a means of creating a sufficiently powerful weapon from parts that served another purpose.
'Our agents should be finished assembling their arms now. I wish that I could have gotten in laser weaponry somehow, but no matter what it tried, the scanners I used in testing flagged the key components.'
This had left him with limited options, and he had eventually found the best answer.
Obviously, laser weaponry would have been preferred, as even the cheapest laser pistol could still fire over a hundred shots before needing to reload and could kill a person in a single hit.
As for what Fargus had managed to sneak in, each weapon could only hold six rounds at a time, and the reloading process was somewhat tedious. Honestly the makeshift electromagnetic launchers he had designed paled in comparison to any modern weaponry on the market.
'Still, they'll get the job done.' Fargus thought as twenty people that appeared to be court staff members came around a corner in front of them.
Each of them had a prosthetic limb, a clear sign that these were the agents set in place by the Odium Syndicate through Fargus.
Immediately they all raised their arms which had been modified into electromagnetic launchers and fired.
Their first targets were the armed personnel escorting the group.
The supersonic metal projectiles tore through their personal shield generators and ripped into their bodies. In only a few seconds, the ones there to protect everyone were lying on the floor unmoving.
Senator Fena screamed loudly as she feigned fear, but she knew that these assailants were really agents working for her.
Some of the lawyers and other court staff started to panic and tried to flee. However, when they turned around to run away, they found that there was nowhere to go. More enemies dressed as court staff had flanked them and cut off any chance of escape.
"Move aside if you don't want to end up like those guys." One of the attackers said in a gruff voice and glanced down at the clearly unmoving officers.
The prosecutors and other court staff had surrounded Grito protectively, and these intruders were not hiding the fact that he was their target.
Once those surrounding Grito had moved away, the short Baccigan was completely exposed and at the mercy of the attackers.
"You only have yourself to blame for this. Had you just stayed quiet and continued working for us, you would have lived a long life."
Without waiting another second, the man that was obviously the leader of these assassins pointed his mechanical arm forward and fired.
The projectile hit Grito directly in his head. The force of the shot blasting a giant hole in him and splatting the contents of his insides all over the floor.
Each of the Odium Syndicate operatives began to smile now that the greatest loose end they had ever had was no more.
Except, as everyone stared at what should have been Grito's dead body, it became apparent that something was wrong.
Instead of blood and brain matter, what was leaking out of the thing's head was oil and pieces of metal.
"It's a fake." Senator Fena said in disbelief.
She then looked towards the downed guards and noticed that they too, were not living people. All of them had been replaced by robots created in the real individuals' likenesses.
Rage started to boil up in all of the Odium Syndicate collaborators. They realized that it was not their plans that had gone off without a hitch. Instead, they were the ones that had been tricked.
Now that the deception had been revealed, the other people that were not involved with the defendant's side began moving.
All of them were robots as well, and since there was no need to keep up the façade, they started apprehending the armed assailants.
"What the hell is going on here?!" Senator Fena's chief advocate shouted. He and the other defense lawyers were the only ones completely in the dark and were utterly baffled by the current turn of events.
