Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Kakuna
Kakuna happily bounced around, wiggling its hardened body in excitement.
Zen and Blue, however, just stood there, completely stunned.
"What…?" Zen finally muttered, still trying to process what just happened.
Blue shook his head.
"I've never seen anything like this before…"
Before they could say more, the lab door suddenly swung open.
"Aaaahhh, I'm so tired…"
A familiar voice groaned as an older man stepped inside.
It was Professor Oak.
He stretched his back with a sigh.
"Man, I'm too old for all this pokemon battle…" he muttered.
Then, he froze.
The lights were on.
He narrowed his eyes.
"Wait… why are the lights on? Someone there?"
Blue spoke up.
"Grandpa?"
Professor Oak turned toward the voice.
"Blue? What are you doing here so late? And what—"
His eyes locked onto Kakuna.
He went completely silent.
Zen, still hugging Kakuna, swallowed nervously.
"Uh… h-hello, Professor…" he said awkwardly.
Professor Oak slowly approached, adjusting his glasses.
"Hey, kid… where did you get this little guy?"
His curious gaze studied Kakuna, taking in its strange purple shell and glowing red eyes.
Zen took a deep breath and began explaining everything—how he caught Weedle, how it never evolved, how he searched for Beedrill honey, and how Blue helped him get some.
Blue nodded.
"Then, after eating the honey, this happened."
Professor Oak listened carefully, nodding as they spoke.
Finally, he crossed his arms and grinned.
"So, you gave Weedle some Beedrill honey… and then it evolved into this Kakuna?"
Zen and Blue nodded in unison.
Professor Oak suddenly laughed.
"Hahaha! This is a new discovery! What a fascinating evolution!"
His eyes sparkled with excitement as he studied Kakuna again.
"It even mutated! This is groundbreaking! Kid, how about leaving your Kakuna here? I promise I'll take good care of it!"
Zen's arms tightened around Kakuna.
"No way!" he said firmly.
Kakuna was his Pokémon, his best friend.
Professor Oak chuckled.
"Alright, alright, no need to be so protective. I understand."
He adjusted his coat.
"Still, this is fascinating… A new evolution path for Weedle, huh? While it's exciting, it's not quite as important as my current research…"
Zen tilted his head.
"Your current research?"
Blue smirked.
"He's obsessed with evolution caused by stones. Fire Stones, Thunder Stones, that kind of thing."
Professor Oak stroked his chin.
"That's right. But this… a natural mutation through food… This is something else."
Zen hesitated, then asked, "Would it be okay for you to take a look on Kakuna?"
Professor Oak smiled warmly.
"Of course! I'll do a quick scan."
Professor Oak placed Kakuna into a scanning machine.
The monitor beeped as data loaded.
A few moments later, the results appeared.
Professor Oak read through them, nodding thoughtfully.
Then, he turned to Zen.
"This is fascinating… According to my machine, your Kakuna is no longer a Bug/Poison type."
Zen blinked.
"Wait… what?"
Blue leaned in, curious.
"Then what type is it now?"
Professor Oak grinned.
"It's now a Poison/Bug type."
Zen frowned.
"Isn't that… the same thing?"
Professor Oak shook his head.
"Not quite. Normally, Kakuna is mostly a Bug-type, with Poison as a secondary trait. But your Kakuna is now primarily a Poison-type."
He pointed at the monitor.
"That means its poison-based moves will be much stronger than a normal Kakuna's. Any Poison-type attack will have increased potency."
Zen stared at Kakuna.
So, it's stronger than a normal Kakuna?
Blue folded his arms.
"Lucky you… I wish I had a mutated Pokémon."
Zen smiled.
"Well… I don't know how it happened, but I'm happy with how Weedle—er, Kakuna turned out."
Professor Oak chuckled.
"Good. Take good care of it. I have a feeling this Kakuna will be very special."
After spending some time at the lab, Zen finally left to find Rock and Mr. Stone.
When he met up with them, Rock immediately noticed his Kakuna.
"Whoa! What happened to your Weedle?!"
Zen explained explain to rock "em I have a bit adventure with weedle... kakuna"
Mr. Stone laughed.
"Heh! Sounds like you had quite the adventure, kid."
Rock grinned.
"Man, I wish I saw that happen!"
Zen patted Kakuna's shell.
Mr. Stone stretched.
"Well, we'd better head back to Viridian before it gets too late."
Zen and Rock nodded.
Mr. Stone then pulled out two Pokéballs and released his Pidgeots.
"Alright, kids. Hop on."
Zen hesitated for a second, remembering his last experience flying.
Rock laughed.
"Don't worry, Zen! You won't fall off! I think…"
Zen shot him a glare.
Mr. Stone smirked.
"Ready?"
Rock eagerly nodded.
Zen nodded.
The Pidgeots then flapped their wings and soared into the sky.
"AAAAAAAHHH!" Zen screamed as he held on tightly.
Rock laughed.
"This is so cool!"
The lights of Pallet Town twinkled below them.
The wind rushed past him.
And in that moment… he smiled.
"Yeah… This is pretty cool."
With that, they flew toward Viridian City, the stars shining brightly above them.
