Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Voluntary Engagement
As an external participant representing the Pokemon Academy's team, Kalia found it acceptable to compete. Moreover, she would have the opportunity to battle some exceptional Trainers from various academies.
Kalia never shied away from Trainer battles, as high-quality Pokemon contests offered valuable learning experiences. Even defeat was not daunting for her, as each encounter held lessons to be gleaned.
After Axel left, Kalia entered the Battle Tower and proceeded to the fifth floor, ready for another day of combat.
On the fifth floor, at Battlefield No. 3.
Kalia awaited her challenger. As the gates opened, a young man with black hair walked in. He appeared slightly older than Kalia but still not yet an adult.
"Long time no see."
The black-haired youth smiled faintly upon seeing Kalia, his tone carrying a hint of familiarity, like greeting an old friend after a long absence.
Recognizing the Trainer before her, Kalia recalled their past interactions. When she was still a Gym Leader, he frequently visited the Battle Tower to challenge others, leading them to become somewhat acquainted, albeit not intimately so.
This young man standing before her was one such acquaintance. However, it was evident that he wasn't here merely for reminiscing; their relationship had never been particularly friendly.
In the past, Kalia had inherited her father's Grass-type Pokémon, while the black-haired youth favored Water-types and primarily trained with them.
After obtaining the Fire-type Gym badge, he promptly arrived at Rhine City. Later, when challenging the grass-type gym, Kalia naturally didn't go easy on him just because they were acquaintances. Leveraging type advantage, she effortlessly defeated him.
The black-haired youth hoped that during his next challenge, Kalia would show some leniency, allowing him to earn the Grass-type Gym badge. However, as expected, Kalia firmly rejected his request, leading the young man to leave indignantly.
"Hmph, don't you recognize me anymore?" The black-haired youth's tone suddenly turned icy, accompanied by a dismissive snort.
Kalia couldn't quite recall his name—what was it again? Something like Brooke or...maybe Brook?
"Brook, of course I remember you," Kalia said calmly. "However, time is precious; let's begin our battle."
"What do you mean 'Brook'? My name is Blanc!" the black-haired youth exclaimed loudly, feeling deeply insulted that Kalia no longer recognized him.
To obtain the Grass-type badge, he had tried every strategy imaginable. Yet, facing Grass-types with his Water-type Pokémon proved highly disadvantageous, and retraining new ones would be too time-consuming.
Eventually, after considerable effort and cost, Blanc managed to teach his Kingler the Bug-type move X-Scissor. However, when he returned to challenge the grass-type gym again, he discovered that the Gym Leader had changed.
Facing Tamagawa Naoki, who was even stronger than Kalia, Blanc ultimately failed once more. Training with a single attribute made it too easy for opponents to exploit weaknesses.
In the end, he could only return to Ruby City, challenging the Battle Tower in hopes of enhancing his Pokémon's strength. After some time, he planned to revisit Rhine City and attempt the grass-type gym again.
Unexpectedly, he encountered Kalia at the Battle Tower. Originally on the sixth floor, Blanc intentionally lost five consecutive battles, descending to the fifth floor solely to face Kalia.
"I thought I'd never meet you again, but here we are. I heard you started training Fire-type Pokémon now. Let me give you a taste of the despair I once felt." With those words, Blanc tossed out a Poké Ball.
"Go, Kingler!"
A crimson-colored Kingler landed on the battlefield. Compared to its Krabby form, one of Kingler's red claws had grown exceptionally large, possessing immense strength capable of crushing rocks.
Listening to the commotion outside, Lian voluntarily emerged from his Poké Ball onto the battlefield. Having just maximized his Water Resistance, this presented an ideal opportunity to test its effectiveness against Water-type moves.
Kalia initially planned to send out Grovyle, but seeing Charmeleon emerge voluntarily from its Poké Ball, she refrained from releasing Grovyle.
She suddenly recalled that her opponent was challenging the sixth floor, and given Grovyle's level of strength, it wouldn't stand a chance.
This battle would likely be tough, as her adversary specialized in training Water-type Pokémon. Besides Kingler, they also had a formidable Water-type Golduck, both being powerful creatures.
Despite Charmeleon's prowess, facing Water-type Pokémon still put it at a disadvantage.
"Charmeleon, go for it!" Kalia could only offer encouragement; she couldn't show defeatism just because of the type disadvantage. Moreover, this wasn't the first time Charmeleon had battled against Water-types, so even if it lost, there would be no harm.
Lian observed the opposing Kingler. Dealing with Kingler shouldn't be difficult; it lacks speed, although its attack and defense are commendable, while other aspects are average. Against him, aside from elemental advantages and resistance, Kingler held few significant benefits.
Currently, Lian's Water Resistance negated any typical vulnerability to Water-type moves, making their matchup relatively balanced.
"Kingler, use Bubble Beam."
Meanwhile, Blanc felt certain of his victory, having previously suffered greatly due to type disadvantage. He now placed significant importance on exploiting such weaknesses.
Although Kingler wasn't particularly skilled with Water-type Special moves, he believed it could still effortlessly defeat this Charmeleon.
He aimed for Kingler to overpower Charmeleon solely using Water-type attacks, forcing Kalia to experience the same despair she faced when challenging the grass-type gym with her Water-type Pokémon.
Lian thought Blanc's strategy was absurd. Kingler excelled at physical attack moves, yet Blanc insisted on using Bubble Beam? It seemed like a foolish decision.
Kingler's most effective move, Vise Grip, despite being a Normal-type, would undoubtedly have more power than relying on Bubble Beam.
Initially, Lian expected Kingler to use its exclusive Water-type attack, Crabhammer, but then realized that given its level, Kingler had not yet learned it.
However, resorting to Bubble Beam against him seemed quite excessive.
Kalia understood Blanc's intentions somewhat; he had genuinely pleaded with her before, but she couldn't agree as it violated the Gym Leader's principles.
"Charmeleon, use Dragon Rage."
Kalia chimed in, emphasizing that against Water-type Pokémon, Dragon Rage remained the most effective move currently available. At this stage, Charmeleon's Dragon Rage would remain highly potent for quite some time.
As Kingler unleashed Bubble Beam, vibrant and shimmering beams continuously shot towards Lian.
Lian didn't bother dodging; he genuinely disliked evasive maneuvers due to their exhausting nature. However, for high scores, evasion was often necessary.
Now equipped with enhanced Water Resistance, Lian could virtually ignore standard water-type moves. Considering Kingler's Special Attack Attribute, even with the type advantage boost, the power of its Bubble Beam was significantly limited.
Standing firm, Lian faced the incoming Bubble Beam without flinching or moving an inch.
The colorful beams repeatedly struck Lian, but the impact was minimal, unable to force him back even a single step. He noticed that upon contact, his skin seemed to develop a subtle protective layer, likely a result of increased Water Resistance.
To Lian, the Bubble Beam felt inconsequential, akin to gentle tickling, causing no discomfort or effect whatsoever.
