Chapter 73: Chapter 71: Vanishing Ditto and a Clever Ruse
Ethan Grave sat hunched over his desk, meticulously reviewing a short list of Biolife Alliance partners. He glanced over each line, occasionally speaking their names in a hushed tone:
"Kyrie Sohno of Cipla Shipping... John Constantine of Demiurgic Advertising... Kim Kibutsuji of Upper Moon Ltd...."
A small smile curled his lips. This small group, Ethan knew, held considerable sway in the Biolife Alliance, so much so that if they were frightened into retreat, the entire organization would falter.
He couldn't help but recall the chaos caused by the recent International Convention and Exhibition Center fiasco, courtesy of the Ice and Fire Alliance. Back then, Sullivan had been seriously wounded and was still recovering. The Biolife Alliance leaders, in turn, had trembled with fear during the attack, unsure if they'd be the killers' next targets.
"Maybe," Ethan mused, "a second scare is just what they need." He tapped the page harder. A cunning idea formed in his mind
Ditto, the malleable new Pokémon could stage an impersonation of the assassins, sowing just enough fear to make these executives reconsider their allegiance. All he had to do was confirm just how advanced Ditto's transformation ability really was.
---
His phone buzzed, jolting him from his scheming. Checking the screen, Ethan recognized the number as James.
"Mr. Grave," James said, his voice shaking, "bad news. Ditto... is gone!"
Ethan felt his stomach turn. Ditto was a rare, unregistered Pokémon whose extraordinary transformation powers, if stolen, could be a goldmine or a devastating loss. "I'm on my way," he said curtly, and bolted from his office, weaving through the corridors of Pokémon Biotech.
In less than an hour, Ethan arrived at Lab #2. He found James at the entrance, obviously weighed down by guilt and worry. "I'm sorry, Mr. Grave. I should have watched Ditto more closely."
Ethan cut him off with a quick wave. "There's no time for blame. Show me the security tapes."
James' expression turned grim. "We've already checked it. No suspicious figures in the building. Ditto... vanished into thin air."
---
A scramble ensued. Employees ran between corridors, labs, and storage rooms. They combed every nook and cranny of the facility, fearing that an intruder might have slipped away with Ditto. As Ethan entered the breeding area, an airy room filled with small habitats and bright overhead lights, he scanned the nursery. Dozens of baby Pokémon dozed or played among the plush mats, but there was no sign of Ditto's distinctive purple form.
"Could it have transformed into another Pokémon?" Ethan hypothesized aloud, sweeping his eyes over the variety of creatures. "If so, it's hiding in plain sight."
James nodded and bit his lip. "We already took a look around, but everything looked... normal," he said, exhaling in frustration. "Nothing out of place."
Ethan's gaze wandered to a small, gently rippling pool on the other side of the room. Several Squirtle were splashing about, but one in particular seemed... out of place. Its swimming strokes were awkward, and its eyes were oddly small, black pearls rather than wide, curious orbs.
"That's it," Ethan murmured. "Our culprit."
He stepped over and scooped the strange turtle out of the water. The little squirt gave a startled squeal and wriggled in Ethan's hands. James frowned at the creature's tiny, almost needle-like eyes.
"It's not one of ours," James muttered. "We don't have a single Squirtle with eyes like that."
Ethan's lips curled. "Exactly. Ditto doesn't handle eye shapes well yet." He flicked the turtle's forehead. "Drop the act, you troublemaker."
Immediately, the fake Squirtle shimmered, its shell and color seeming to drain away in a ripple. Within seconds, a squishy purple blob occupied Ethan's palms, its beady eyes gleaming mischievously.
---
A collective sigh of relief went through the staff, though some scowled in exasperation. "You had us scared to death," James grumbled, arms crossed. "Just for a little swim?"
Ditto offered a playful squeak, as if congratulating itself on a successful prank. Annoyed, James dropped his arms. "You do realize we spent hours turning this lab upside down."
Ethan chuckled softly. "In the future, watch out for the black eyes. That's the tell." He patted Ditto's head, then dug out a nutrient cream. Delighted, Ditto gulped down the entire pouch and spat the plastic container at James' feet. The scientist scowled, but said nothing.
When the initial excitement died down, Ethan gave a curt nod. "I'll take Ditto with me. We have... important work to do."
---
Leaving the lab with Ditto on his arm, Ethan walked to his car, his thoughts racing. He had little time to test his plan while the memory of the Ice and Fire Alliance's rampage remained fresh in the minds of Kyrie Sohno, John Constantine, Kim Kibutsuji, and the rest of the Biolife Alliance's top brass.
Arriving at his private mansion, Ethan wasted no time rummaging through a large, dimly lit closet. He pulled out a bright blue wig, a cheap V-shaped mask, and a baggy black suit. "We're going to impersonate the blue-haired assassin," he remarked, recalling footage of the attackers. "He had a sword-like python that everyone recognized."
For several minutes, he practiced a raspy, abrasive voice and replayed leaked videos of the Ice and Fire Alliance in action. Some onlookers at the International Convention and Exhibition Center had recorded part of the ambush, capturing the python's deadly slashes and the raw strength of its companion, a fearsome kangaroo-like Pokémon. Ethan pointed to the screen, letting Ditto absorb every detail.
"Do you think you can copy that Python?" he asked, glancing at Ditto, who blinked curiously. The videos showed the python's distinctive bony ridges and fearsome fangs. Slowly, Ditto's form lengthened, its purple hue taking on a scaly pattern. Within moments, a smaller but eerily accurate bone-bladed snake coiled at Ethan's feet.
"Perfect," Ethan said in an undertone, kneeling down to stroke the snake's spine. "Hold that shape during the video. That alone should be enough to scare them."
Ditto hissed in understanding and flexed his newly formed blade-like spines. With a satisfied nod, Ethan positioned himself in front of a neutral background. He'd cleared away personal items and rearranged some decorations to thwart any attempt to identify the interior of his mansion.
---
Ethan turned on his phone's camera and began recording. He adopted a chilling sneer behind the V-shaped mask, while Ditto, still disguised as a snake, coiled around his waist, the blade glinting under the harsh glare of a lamp.
"Greetings," Ethan growled, his voice deep and threatening. "I speak in the name of the Ice and Fire Alliance."
He paused for effect, letting the camera linger on Ditto's serpentine form. Anyone who had seen or heard about the horrible python from the conference attack would recognize the creature instantly. That was the point.
He continued, "We have... unfinished business with certain members of the Biolife Alliance. If you continue to interfere, we'll be forced to pay you a visit. Charles Sullivan isn't the only one we can cripple."
His tone was menacing, reminiscent of the original assassin. Fear, Ethan knew, was a powerful weapon. If Kyrie Sohno, John Constantine, Kim Kibutsuji, and others believed that the Ice and Fire Alliance was specifically targeting them, they might flee from Charles Sullivan, tearing the Biolife Alliance apart at the seams.
Ditto hissed theatrically, as if in agreement. The blade along its spine shimmered with a deadly aura, and Ethan allowed himself a small chuckle. "Your time is running out," he added, stepping closer to the camera. "The Alliance of Ice and Fire never fails."
With that, he ended the recording, his heart pounding with adrenaline. He took off the wig, tore off the mask, and exhaled. Beside him, Ditto shed its python form and returned to a cuddly purple blob. Ethan gave the creature a congratulatory pat and smiled. "Excellent work, partner. You've helped me strike fear into the hearts of the Biolife Alliance."
---
Ethan still had to distribute the video carefully to avoid detection. He planned to send it through secure means, anonymized accounts, untraceable networks, ensuring that the recipients truly believed the assassin had returned. One by one, the big names in the Biolife Alliance would open the chilling video, see the dreaded knife python, and lose their nerve.
He turned off his phone and prepared to send the file from a disposable device in a crowded neighborhood. If even a fraction of them panicked and retreated, Charles Sullivan's support base would thin drastically. With Sullivan still nursing his injuries, the fallout could be huge.
---
Night fell over Tarvok City. From the villa window, Ethan watched the distant skyline bathed in scattered lights. Ditto rested peacefully by his side, looking far too innocent for the ruse he had just helped to perpetrate.
Ethan let out a soft chuckle. "I wonder how Charles will react when he sees his allies scattering," he mused. "No one stands by a wounded king when assassins still roam the kingdom."
His expression grew pensive for a moment. He remembered how important Ditto had been earlier, when he had disappeared to swim as a Squirtle, only to confirm how adept he was at shape-shifting. If Pokémon Biotech continued to develop that ability, there was no telling what else might be possible.
For now, though, Ethan accepted his short-term victory. The video would be emailed, alliances would be shaken, and fear would spread. All thanks to a playful little blob that could turn into a deadly snake on command, and an ambitious man intent on exploiting terror for strategic gain.
As he put aside the day's plans, Ethan felt a surge of excitement. Let the Biolife Alliance tremble in their shoes, he thought. And let Charles Sullivan realize that in a world shaped by these new Pokémon, cunning trumps brute force.
The lights dimmed, and Ethan settled down for a few hours' rest, confident that the seeds of chaos had been planted. In the morning, the video would find its targets, and the real power shift would begin.
