Chapter 75: Chapter 73: Skillful Coaches and a Hidden Advantage
The sudden collapse of the Biolife Alliance took many people by surprise. Even Charles had found it impossible to salvage the situation once his influential associates began to defect.
After suffering a serious shoulder injury, he was on guard on two fronts: fearing the Ice and Fire Alliance's next move, and hoping that the police could quickly identify the killers behind the attack on the International Convention and Exhibition Center.
Meanwhile, Pokémon Paradise, a private park not yet open to the public, went about its daily business. This lush park served as a haven for newly hatched Pokémon.
It was currently home to mostly Pichu and Squirtle, with each group developing unique moves in preparation for potential buyers and expansions. The name "Paradise" was fitting, as it was surrounded by green hills and offered open fields for baby Pokémon to practice new skills.
In one corner of the park, two remarkable Pokémon served as trainers for their younger siblings. The first was Colt, a Pichu who had advanced enough to teach other Pichu basic skills. The second was Hydro, a Squirtle known for his diligent and mischievous approach to training. Both had been mentored by Ethan Grave in the past, and their advanced moves and refined technique set them apart from the others.
"Pi pichu!" cried a small voice. Several Pichu struggled to replicate a maneuver Colt had just demonstrated. Hydro's group of Squirtle, meanwhile, flailed about in the shallow practice pond, trying to refine their water attacks without drowning each other.
Ethan paced the perimeter of the park in the morning light, watching Colt and Hydro lead their groups. His goal was not to intervene directly yet. His goal was to see if the Pokémon had truly absorbed what they were being taught, or if they continued to rely on him for their progress.
After extensive training from Ethan, both Colt and Hydro had begun to develop complex moves for Pichu and Squirtle. Through them, the younger Pokémon could learn a variety of skills. The results had been promising, though not as dramatic as when Ethan himself had been the instructor.
He paused for a moment. The first few times Ethan had taught advanced moves to Pichu or Squirtle, he had noticed that a handful of them, like Colt or Hydro, seemed to pick up complicated moves almost instantly. At first, he thought it was because they were particularly bright, or that he himself might have a gift for teaching. More recently, he suspected something else.
The presence of his Pokémon Pokédex seemed to give a hidden boost to the Pokémon he personally trained. Each lesson progressed with uncanny speed, as if some unseen force was aiding the transfer of knowledge.
Ethan had conducted tests to confirm this suspicion. Colt would teach one group of Pichu to weave an electric net while Ethan conducted the same lesson for another group. Consistently, the group he taught progressed faster. This was not to take away from Colt's efforts to improve as a trainer, but the intangible advantage probably came from the Pokédex that Ethan always carried with him.
Recognizing that he could not personally train every new Pokémon, Ethan assigned roles to Colt and Hydro. He watched them from a distance that morning to see how the training would go without his intervention. After more than half an hour, Pichu was still unable to form the Electric Net, better known as Electro Web, and the Squirtle group was having trouble spitting out Hydro Pump with enough pressure. The coaches were starting to get tired, as were their students.
Ethan decided to step in. "Colt," he called gently, "take a break. Let me show them something." The young Pichu coach gave a small nod, relieved that Ethan would demonstrate.
Ethan gathered the Pichu in front of him and crouched down to meet their eyes. "All right, everyone, watch closely." He chose the simplest version of the Electro Web, forming a cross-shaped web of crackling electricity in the air. A hush fell as the Pichu watched their mentor's movements. Even Hydro and the Squirtle turned to watch. (Gestures with his hands, in case you were wondering)
"Try to imagine a little plus sign made of electricity," Ethan said. "Concentrate your energy at the tips, then connect them in the middle. No need to form complicated webs yet." Soon, with Ethan's direct guidance, each Pichu was creating a rudimentary electroweb. Some spark lines fizzled, but most found success far more quickly than when Colt tried to explain the concept alone.
He let them practice under Colt's watch for a few minutes, then moved over to Hydro's group. "You know Water Gun, right?" Ethan asked, addressing half a dozen Squirtles. They responded with lively squeaks and splashes. "Well, Hydro Pump is like Water Gun, but with more power. It requires a bit of a buildup in your stomach. Imagine a stronger stream, then release. Let's do this together."
Ethan demonstrated, miming an exaggerated inhalation as if he were a Squirtle preparing a water blast. Eyes bright with newfound determination, the Squirtle attempted the move, spewing arcs of water that flew farther than before. A few coughed and sputtered, but within minutes they showed marked improvement.
Satisfied, Ethan stepped back and let Colt and Hydro resume their roles. He had tested the theory again, confirming that the Pokémon progressed significantly faster when he was involved. With that accomplished, he turned his attention to another goal. "I need to record a video of your skills," he said, waving Colt and Hydro away from their teams and leading them to a quieter side of the park. "We'll let the buyers see what Pichu and Squirtle can do at their peak. That way they can continue their training at home."
He set up a simple camcorder, positioning it to get a clear view of the two trainers. Colt went first, performing quick bursts of Thunder Shock, a partially formed Electro Web, and a demonstration of Iron Tail. Hydro took center stage next, demonstrating Water Gun, the more powerful Hydro Pump, and a Rocket Headbutt. As they went through each ability, Ethan explained them in a calm, measured tone, describing their uses and the basics of how to train for them.
"Electric-type creatures like Pichu get extra power from moves like Thunder Shock and Thunder Wave," Ethan explained. "Those same attacks can be especially effective against Water-type Pokémon, so keep that in mind when you're practicing at home. A Squirtle, on the other hand, can learn physical attacks like Rocket Headbutt and rely on its shell to limit recoil."
He paused the camera, repositioned it, and spent about half an hour filming the Squirtle demonstration. He then devoted a similar block of time to Pichu. He intended to splice them together into a one-hour training guide. Potential owners, especially those who had purchased the first wave of Pokémon, could see exactly how to push their pets to higher skill levels.
As the filming ended, Ethan looked around. "Pikachu, let's go," he called, expecting his main partner to materialize at his side. Only silence met his words. Confused, he scanned the park. "Pikachu?" There was no sign of Timmy or Charmander either.
He turned on the Pokémon Monitor, an advanced device that allowed him to track the vital signs and approximate location of any Pokémon.
Sure enough, Timmy and Charmander appeared as flashing icons at a higher elevation, presumably in the park's hilly back section. The device's perspective function confirmed that the two had climbed the mountain again, probably in search of tasty bird eggs or other mischief. Ethan sighed, aware of Charmander's penchant for cracking open random bird nests.
A few minutes later, he climbed up a gently sloping path to find Timmy and Charmander huddled near a natural pile of rocks, busily frying some eggs over a small flame. The juicy smell of cooking eggs made Ethan's mouth water, though he shook his head in exasperation. "That's why I can't take you two unsupervised," he muttered, imagining the poor mother bird returning to an empty nest.
Charmander gave him a defiant look, as if to say that the eggs smelled too good to pass up. Ethan knelt down and took a small bite. The texture was surprisingly soft and slightly smoky. "All right, fine," he said with a resigned chuckle. "I admit you have a talent for cooking. But you can't go raiding every nest on the mountainside. Next time, I'll bring you some eggs from the store, and you can fry them at your leisure. That way, you won't be attacking wild animals for a snack."
He tapped Charmander lightly on the head. The creature let out a soft cry of acceptance, showing no remorse for its feathered theft. Timmy the Pikachu hopped up and down, his face beaming with excitement at the idea of daily fried eggs.
Despite his earlier annoyance, Ethan found himself smiling. "It's decided then. I'll let you do some cooking in the future, but only with eggs bought at the market."
By the time they made their way back to the main part of the park, the sun was lower in the sky. Ethan asked a staff member to take the video footage for editing. With an hour's worth of demonstrations on tape, each section labeled with short bullet points, the final product would be a valuable resource for new Pokémon owners.
Next, he planned to consult with Annie to finalize distribution, making sure the video included a cautionary note reminding trainers to avoid overexerting their young Pokémon.
As he left the park, Ethan reflected on the day's accomplishments. Colt and Hydro would remain as capable trainers for the younger generations, though Ethan now confirmed more than ever that his direct involvement provided an inexplicable boost to learning.
He shrugged at the thought. If that was his hidden advantage, perhaps it was best to keep it a secret. Let the buyers watch the training videos and learn the basics, while Ethan worked behind the scenes to shape the next wave of advanced Pokémon.
He took one last look around Pokémon Paradise. Squirtle splashed happily as Pichu practiced Electro Web around the pond. Timmy and Charmander strolled behind him, satisfied with their egg frying adventure. Tomorrow promised more progress. Ethan Grave's future in the world of biotechnology and Pokémon breeding was bright, fueled by his unparalleled ability to guide creatures to their full potential.
