Pokemon: Behold the Father of All Pokemons

Chapter 78: Chapter 76: Mew the Shapeshifter

The sudden collapse of the Biolife Alliance took many observers by surprise. Even Charles, at the center of it all, was unable to stabilize the situation after several key figures began to withdraw. This was due in part to the threatening emails sent under the guise of the Ice and Fire Alliance. While Charles remained in virtual lockdown recovering from his injuries, he could do little to reverse the wave of desertions.

Meanwhile, life at Pokémon Biotech continued to be hectic. Day after day, Ethan and his team explored new breakthroughs, often encountering the unexpected. The presence of Ditto, a shapeshifting Pokémon, had already caused quite a stir. But this morning, they encountered something new in the lab - another creature that could transform.

Several employees exchanged glances as they watched a small, pink Pokémon named Mew effortlessly take the form of Pikachu. They tried to remain calm, given their previous experience with Ditto. Still, the transformation took them by surprise. Mew's body was nothing like Ditto's gelatinous form; it had fur, graceful limbs and an elegant tail, so how could it copy another Pokémon?

The group could not figure it out. Over time, they had grown accustomed to Ethan's designs, which defied conventional genetics. James once joked privately that the lab staff's routine consisted of alternating periods of routine work with bursts of shock whenever Ethan revealed a new creation. The cycle repeated itself: a spell of boredom, then an amazing Pokémon that shattered their understanding of biology.

"Another shapeshifter," James muttered. "So it's... what? A Variant Cat?"

He thought of Ditto's nickname and almost blurted it out. Then he realized how weird it would sound.

"That name would be all wrong," Ethan said calmly, as if weighing the matter. He paused for a moment before continuing. "We'll keep calling it Mew. It's dreamlike, and it's also the first Psychic-type Pokémon we've managed to create."

"Mew," some of the employees repeated quietly. The name seemed to float in the air. They could not quite see how it fit, but Ethan had a knack for giving these strange creatures memorable names.

James teased him with a playful grin. "At least you didn't choose another weird name. For a while, we thought you were going to call everything Pichu or Pikachu or Squirtle. Something more direct, I guess?"

Ethan just shrugged. He could not explain very well that these names were brought over from another world. He decided to leave it at that. "Go ahead and wipe Mew clean," he said. "It just hatched, so it needs a little help."

He reached out his hand gently to see how the newborn would react. Like most of the other Pokémon created by Pokémon Biotech, Mew approached Ethan's hand as if it recognized him. At that moment, Mew had taken the form of a Pikachu. It nudged his palm in a friendly way.

"You were never this affectionate with Ditto," Ethan teased James. Ditto's unique body texture seemed to make James uncomfortable. Unlike Mew's sleek fur, Ditto resembled a blob of colored putty that made James cringe whenever he saw it.

James gave a half-smile. "I don't mind Ditto changing into something else, but his natural state is just too slimy," he admitted. Meanwhile, Mew changed back to his original pink form and let Ethan wipe it off with a warm cloth.

Mew's curious eyes followed Ethan's every move. Its long tail curled around his arm, brushing against his sleeve as if examining him. "So well-behaved," James said, trying to give it a little pat, but Mew barely acknowledged his hand. Instead, it continued to stare at Ethan.

James let out a mock sigh. "Mr. Grave, why is it only looking at you? I spent a lot of time watching over its egg."

"It probably senses who its father is," Ethan replied with a laugh. Mew probably recognized him as its primary genetic designer. Psychic Pokémon had a knack for sensing deep connections, and Mew's curiosity about Ethan's "special presence" was not surprising.

The mention of paternity brought a slight smile to James' face. "Then I guess I'm the mother, since I helped hatch the egg," he joked, only to realize how awkward that sounded as soon as the words left his mouth. The lab technicians giggled and exchanged dirty looks. A few teased James about not rushing into parenthood.

A flustered James barked, "I didn't mean it like that," then hurried off to get the food. Mew continued to cling to Ethan, who placed a small tube of nourishing cream in front of it. The small pink Pokémon seemed to sense it immediately, and lifted the tube with a slight flick of its telekinesis. The cream floated through the air to its mouth, sending another wave of shock through the crowd.

"Incredible," muttered one employee. "His newborn psychic ability is that strong?"

"I tell you, it is a legendary milestone in genetic design," another whispered.

Ethan nodded, calm on the outside but jubilant on the inside. Mew ate the entire serving of nutrient cream, yawned, and fell into a quiet slumber. Ethan placed him gently on a small bed of cushions and instructed the others to keep the hatchery quiet. Then it was time for him to visit the new batch of eggs developing across the room.

He mentally opened his system interface. The screen in his mind read:

World Event Progress: 8/10.

With Mew's birth, only two more species of Pokémon were needed before something called "Palkia's Gift" would occur. Past experience suggested that once ten species were unlocked and born, meteorites might start falling from the sky. The next pair of new creatures were well on their way. In about a week, this cosmic phenomenon could occur, likely bringing with it an unknown pathway to the creation of Poké Balls. Ethan remembered the cryptic note in his system about harnessing the energy of meteorites for advanced containment technology.

Putting these thoughts aside, Ethan turned his attention to the collapse of the Biolife Alliance. The group was in shambles, with key figures such as Kyrie Sohno and John Constantine withdrawing out of fear of the Ice and Fire Alliance.

Charles had tried to arrange private meetings with them, but they dodged him at every turn. Some claimed illness, others suddenly scheduled international business trips. Furious, Sullivan had little recourse. He could not push them without provoking more backlash.

Ethan had also received updates from Shevaun, who had left the Alliance right after the wave of resignations. Shevaun had resumed a full marketing contract with Pokémon Biotech.

He apologized for previous complications and delivered improved service plans. Satisfied, Ethan moved on to a new venture: opening Pokémon Paradise to the public. This park was already home to many Pichu and Squirtle, but he intended to keep some breeders there to create a self-sustaining Pokémon environment.

Refusing to sell every batch of Pokémon, he kept a few pairs so they could eventually reproduce without relying on the lab's nutrient solution or elaborate tanks. If the day came when Pokémon formed families of their own, Ethan would consider it a great success. That was his vision: a living ecosystem of newborn creatures, thriving under human care and forging a future free from outside constraints.

Smiling at the possibility, Ethan left the incubation room, taking one last look at the sleeping Mew. The pink kitten seemed to sense his gaze, twitching slightly before falling back asleep.

In the corridor, he decided to finalize the park's opening schedule with Shevaun. Once visitors arrived, they would see for themselves how Pichu, Squirtle, and future species coexisted in a comfortable habitat. For now, Mew would remain hidden, another secret that set Pokémon Biotech apart from any other biotech company in the world.
