Chapter 85: Chapter 84: First Test of Evolution Fluid
For the past month, Pokémon Paradise had been thriving under the watchful eye of Ethan and his team at Pokémon Biotech. When Ethan announced a test run of his new Evolution Fluid, excitement spread throughout the lab.
He had carefully packaged the fluid in special glass vials, each with a distinctive wrapper that hinted at its transformative potential. Many employees were skeptical, after all, the fluid had only a slim chance of success, but Ethan wanted to confirm its effects on a large scale.
Pokémon Paradise was closed to the public three days a week - Monday, Wednesday and Friday - in order to give the creatures time to rest. This Wednesday was no exception, so Ethan and a group of lab assistants traveled to the park with cases of Evolution Fluid. Their plan was simple: feed each Pokémon a small dose to see if any would evolve right before their eyes.
James, who had helped raise many of the new species, arrived with Ethan. "So we're about to see if this miracle fluid lives up to the hype," he said with a grin. "You haven't tested it extensively yet, have you?"
Ethan shook his head. "I tried a tiny sample on a few Pokémon in the lab, but with no results. The fluid's success rate is far from guaranteed. We could end up with no evolutions at all." He paused, scanning the quiet landscape. "Though the law of large numbers suggests we might see at least a few lucky transformations."
The park was now home to over a thousand Pokémon, most of them Pichu and Squirtle. Over the past month, several waves of Pichu had gone to new owners, but the park was still teeming with creatures that needed more time in a semi-wild environment before they were fit for sale or demonstration.
Ethan and the team arrived in the morning and parked a truck near the entrance. Inside were crates of sealed glass bottles. Workers carefully unloaded them. Each bottle contained a single dose for one Pokémon, measured to ensure consistency. The liquid itself looked like a clear substance, almost like water, but glistened in direct sunlight.
James addressed the park staff. "Everyone, gather the Pokémon for feeding. We'll try to give each one a bottle." Some of the staff had worried looks on their faces, wondering if the liquid would cause side effects. Ethan had assured them that it was safe, based on previous lab tests, but the uncertainty remained.
One by one, they spread out to the corners of the park. A trainer blew a whistle, summoning dozens of Pokémon who recognized the signal for feeding time. Many Pichu and Squirtle came running on clumsy feet, while a few stragglers remained in the hills, ignoring the call.
Ethan and James sent Timmy and Charmander to fetch the reluctant ones, especially the more daring explorers who liked to venture higher into the forest area.
After about ten minutes of scrambling, most of the Pokémon had gathered. Several crates of Evolution Fluid were stationed in the clearing. The staff opened them, took out the small bottles, and called the Pokémon by name. They persuaded each creature to tilt its head back and gently pour the fluid into its open mouth or beak.
Most Pokémon trusted their handlers without resistance. A few caused a bit of trouble, requiring gentle taps on the forehead to get them to drink.
Ethan personally oversaw the dosage for Charmander, who was nicknamed Igneel, as well as some special Squirtles that were being trained for firefighting. He also fed a few Pichu that had caught his eye, such as Colt, who was Timmy's friend, and a few that were close to developing into Pikachu. "Here you go," he said quietly, tipping the bottle to the Pokémon's lips. "I hope it works for you."
James laughed and fed the mischievous Pichu, named Colt. "This one always sulks when it trains the others," he remarked. Colt gulped down the liquid, but remained unsure.
Within half an hour, all the Pokémon had received their doses. The team lingered, scanning the assembled creatures for signs of transformation. Many employees pulled out cell phones or handheld cameras, hoping to catch footage of an evolution if one occurred. Most of the Pokémon meandered around, licking their lips, seemingly unaware that they had ingested something remarkable.
---
Suddenly, a cry came from across the clearing. "Mr. Grave, over here. Something's happening!" A female employee waved her arms, pointing at a particular Squirtle. Ethan ran over, his eyes widening as he saw the Squirtle's body glow with a faint aura. Within seconds, the Squirtle's form began to bulge. The tail lengthened, the shell became more pronounced, and the colors shifted to deeper hues.
Within moments, the squirt had become a Wartortle, with large wing-like ears and a swirling tail. The staff who witnessed this gasped with delight. Some snapped pictures or shot videos, while others clapped. Ethan's heart leapt. He hadn't really expected a transformation to happen so soon, but it had happened right before their eyes.
The excitement spread to another corner of the clearing. "Mr. Grave, I found another one!" a lab assistant yelled. Ethan turned to see another Squirtle changing shape. This time it was Hydro, who was also part of the firefighting squad. It glowed and ballooned, the edges of its shell becoming more defined, until it, too, emerged as a newly evolved Wartortle. The staff erupted in laughter, thrilled at their second success.
At that moment, James shouted, "Igneel's transforming, too!" He pointed at Igneel, who seemed unsettled by the evolving Squirtle. Charmander's body glowed bright orange, and it began to lengthen, its limbs thickening. The flame on his tail flared with intensity. Soon Charmander was gone, replaced by Charmeleon, a fiercer reptile with a sharper edge to its comb and claws.
Ethan almost dropped the camera in his hands. "Three in a row," he murmured, half in awe. "That's an incredible odds." The staff around them cheered and hugged each other in amazement. They'd braced themselves for a day of zero evolutions, but within minutes they'd witnessed three successful evolutions, all captured on camera.
Meanwhile, the park's Pichu watched, some with their heads tilted. One of them, a lively little fellow who had spent much of the day following a female breeder, also began to glow. The breeder squealed with excitement. "It's happening to you too?" The Pichu's tiny form distorted, her ears becoming more pointed, her tail taking on a jagged shape. Moments later, she found herself holding a newly formed Pikachu.
Another employee looked around for Colt, the particularly cranky Pichu James had just fed. Instead of evolving, Colt remained unchanged, sulking behind a rock and gazing enviously at the newly evolved Pikachu. The disparity in results only underscored the random nature of the fluid's effects. "It must be a matter of luck," James said quietly. "We should let Mianmian know it's not a failure. It could happen in time."
Ethan inhaled and stepped forward to address the staff. "Well, this is much better than I expected. We have at least four confirmed evolutions, which is already wonderful footage to prove the fluid's efficacy." He realized how valuable these live clips would be for marketing. "Let's record everything carefully. We'll keep it for internal data and show some to the public when we're ready."
For the next hour, everyone was busy examining the newly evolved Pokémon. They measured their new sizes, tested their movements, and recorded basic health checks. The lab crew found that while the evolving creatures had experienced sudden bursts of strength, they showed no ill effects afterward.
In the corner, Colt huddled miserably, occasionally glancing over at the evolved crowd. James comforted it with gentle pats, encouraging it not to give up. "The effects of the liquid are random," he said. "There's always next time, or maybe you'll evolve naturally soon."
Ethan watched the scene with satisfaction. Though the evolution fluid had a low success rate, the day's events had proven that it could indeed promote transformations on a large scale. He would still refine the formula and emphasize disclaimers to the public, but witnessing these results made him more confident than ever that the fluid would revolutionize Pokémon ownership.
As the sun crept toward late afternoon, Ethan scanned the park. Wartortle and Charmeleon were strolling the grounds, drawing admiring glances from the staff. The newly evolved Pikachu beamed with newfound energy, scurrying around to greet old friends who had yet to evolve. While many Pokémon remained the same, this small handful of transformations was enough to confirm the fluid's promise.
Ethan gave his team a final nod. "We'll gather all our data and refine how we distribute or sell the fluid. This is exactly what we needed. Congratulations, everyone, let's clean up and carefully label these success stories."
James let out a bright laugh. "I can't believe we've seen so many developments at once. Luck must have been on our side."
"Or maybe it's a glimpse of how strong these bonds are," Ethan replied, remembering the closeness many employees shared with their Pokémon. Perhaps that emotional bond played a role in improving the evolution success rate. He was determined to investigate this further.
For now, he looked forward to tomorrow, when he could share the day's wonder with the world and prepare for the next steps in Pokémon Biotech's remarkable journey.
