Chapter 388: Chapter 388
Pokémon League Year 3, February 7th.
The first day of the Pokémon Battle Tournament.
The opening ceremony had taken place yesterday, following the traditional ritual—eight Flame Bearers carrying Ho-Oh's Sacred Fire from the outskirts of League City to its center.
Among these eight, only one had participated in the previous tournament as a Flame Bearer.
Trafalgar D. Law.
Now 17 years old, Law had returned to the battlefield, stronger than ever alongside his Pokémon partners!
Over the past year, he had not only found teachers to instruct his Pokémon in the ways of Haki, but had also sought out masters to teach them Ninjutsu.
This time, the Dragon King has returned—to reclaim everything that belongs to him!
Familiar Faces and New Contenders
The second Pokémon Battle Tournament saw the return of many familiar competitors:
Drake (X. Drake) – A Dragon-type specialist.
Leo – A member of the Tontatta Tribe.
Morty – A Fairy-type specialist.
Pedro – Captain of the Mink Tribe's Musketeer Squad.
Shyarly – A mermaid participant.
Whitebeard's Adventurer Crew – Newgate, Marco, Vista, Jozu.
However, several former competitors did not return for this tournament:
Sabo
Saul (Saul D. Jaguar)
Mihawk
The four trainers who had now ascended to Elite Four status.
Instead, some new faces had emerged:
Nami – A girl from Cocoyasi Village who had built a Rain Team with Pikachu and Swampert as her main attackers.
Cutty Flam (Franky) – A junior engineer under Iceburg, bringing a team full of muscle-bound Pokémon and making dramatic, exaggerated poses during battles.
Cavendish – The 19-year-old prince of the Briss Kingdom, known for choosing Pokémon that gain immense power after falling asleep.
Benn Beckman – The Vice-Captain of the Red-Haired Adventurers, a strategic trainer who used Grass, Poison, Water, and Ghost-types to execute cunning, infuriating battle strategies.
Both the Marines and the Revolutionary Army had fewer representatives in this tournament—perhaps due to how busy they had been over the past year.
Alternatively, they might have been focusing their efforts on the Pokémon Coordination Contests instead.
Compared to the first Pokémon Battle Tournament, the competition format had remained the same, with the biggest change being the rewards.
Specifically, the rewards for the Top 4 had decreased in quality.
During the first tournament, the concept of the Elite Four and the Champion had not yet been established, so the winners were directly granted these prestigious titles.
However, now that the Elite Four system had been formally introduced, those titles would no longer be awarded outright.
This change only affected the Top 4—for all other competitors, the prizes remained the same.
Instead of receiving instant Elite Four status, the new rewards were:
"Opportunity to Challenge the Path to the Champion" – Awarded to the tournament winner.
"Opportunity to Challenge the Elite Four" – Given to the remaining Top 4 competitors.
"Opportunity to Challenge the Path to the Champion" - The winner must challenge all four members of the Elite Four.
If successful, they can replace any of the defeated members.
Alternatively, they may continue challenging all the way until they have defeated all four members.
If they defeat the entire Elite Four, they earn the right to challenge the Champion.
If they win against the Champion, they become the new Champion.
(Currently, no Champion exists, so they only need to defeat the Elite Four.)
Opportunity to Challenge the Elite FourThe remaining Top 4 competitors are given the chance to challenge one Elite Four member of their choosing.
Although the path to status had become more difficult, this had not deterred the participants.
After all, if you don't fight for it, others will—someone else would gladly take your place.
...
Meanwhile, at Monet's Laboratory...
Unlike the hype surrounding the tournament, Monet was completely uninterested.
She only watched those battles during her free time.
Right now, she was fully occupied as a true Pokémon Professor.
In her laboratory, she had successfully developed:
Pokémon Fossil Revival Technology
Trade Evolution Systems
Poké Balls
Pokémon Storage and Transfer Devices
She was also responsible for continuously updating and expanding the Pokédex.
Inside the pristine white laboratory, Monet was hunched over an experiment table, fiddling with a cut gemstone of natural energy.
Her large assets were squished flat against the table due to her position.
"This is truly an incredible stone… Gardevoir, do you feel it?"
Monet held up a stone.
Dak had once told her that this type of energy crystal could allow Pokémon to temporarily evolve beyond their final stage—a phenomenon known as "Mega Evolution."
So Monet hypothesized that these energy crystals might be related to Evolution Stones that trigger permanent evolutions in certain Pokémon.
Her experiments confirmed that placing Evolution Stones near Natural Energy Crystals caused the stones to absorb more of their respective elemental energy.
However, in return, the corresponding colored energy within the Natural Energy Crystal diminished.
For instance:
Fire Stones became brighter and hotter, while the red hues in the Natural Energy Crystal faded.
This meant her theory wasn't entirely baseless.
She also noticed that some large energy crystals sent by Dak had a pale, almost white coloration—signifying a "neutral attribute."
She classified these as "Keystones," setting them aside for later study.
Over the week, she conducted experiments using various fully-evolved Pokémon and Evolution Stones.
Then, she made a breakthrough.
One particular energy crystal resonated strongly with two Ampharos.
Both Pokémon reported feeling an overwhelmingly compatible energy from it.
She also found that Thunder Stones could absorb electric energy from this crystal.
However, when she tested other Electric-type Pokémon, they felt the energy, but not as strongly as Ampharos.
That moment confirmed it—this was Ampharos' Mega Stone.
Unfortunately, according to Dak, Mega Evolution required an extremely strong bond between the Pokémon and its Trainer.
Monet had no special bond with these Ampharos, so she was unable to trigger Mega Evolution herself.
"Gardevoir, why don't you try? See if any of these resonate with you."
Monet gestured to a large glass container filled with small energy crystals.
Gardevoir used its psychic power to levitate the crystals into the air, scanning them one by one.
Seconds later, it shook its head—none of them felt particularly special.
However, after searching several more containers, Gardevoir finally found one.
A rainbow-colored stone.
"Shall we give it a try?"
Monet's eyes sparkled as she held the gemstone, looking excitedly at Gardevoir.
She believed that with their strong bond, if this was truly Gardevoir's Mega Stone, it would definitely work.
"Gardevoir, you know what I'm thinking, right?"
"Gaaarde!"
Gardevoir nodded confidently.
Psychic-type Pokémon had an innate advantage in Mega Evolution—because they could naturally sense their Trainer's thoughts.
Gardevoir understood.
Monet simply wanted to succeed.
Thus, Gardevoir also held the same expectation, aligning her thoughts with Monet's as much as possible.
Monet held the Keystone, while Gardevoir gripped the Mega Stone.
They pressed their palms together—synchronizing their emotions.
"Mega Evolve, Gardevoir!"
"Gaaaaaarde!"
A brilliant white light erupted from Gardevoir's body.
Monet's expression became serious—she could feel Gardevoir's thoughts clearly.
This was not a telepathic connection.
This was the bond of Mega Evolution.
Moments later…
Gardevoir opened her eyes—shocked at her new form.
"Gaaaarde?!"
Monet grinned.
The Era of Mega Evolution… had begun.
