Chapter 27: Psychic Dungeon
After all his thoughts and planning, Kay decided to set aside the idea of Eevee's evolution for another time.
For now, he focused on finding a new dungeon to explore. After searching online for a while, he came across an F-rank dungeon containing Psychic-type energy as what Kay had read in the dungeon's report shared on the league's website.
It seemed like a good choice for Eevee and Growlithe to gain more experience. With his next goal set, Kay prepared for bed, planning to head out early the next day.
The following morning, Kay enjoyed a hearty breakfast before setting out. On his way to the dungeon, he stopped by the trade market to buy Pokeballs.
He approached a vendor and requested two Pokeballs, one for Fire-type Pokemon and another for Normal-type Pokemon.
The vendor handed him the Pokeballs, explaining that each Pokeball can change after the Pokemon's evolution to match the Pokemon's new typing. Kay paid 200 Pokedollars for the two Pokeballs, thankful for the affordable price.
After leaving the market, Kay arrived at the dungeon's gate. Soldiers were stationed nearby, waiting for orders to give access to trainers.
After a short wait, the soldiers granted the trainers access to the dungeon, and Kay stepped through the shimmering gate into the psychic-type dungeon.
The sight before him was unlike anything he had ever seen. The dungeon was a surreal and otherworldly place where the boundaries of reality seemed to blur. The ground beneath his feet glowed faintly, pulsating like it was alive.
Floating islands hovered in the air, connected by shimmering bridges made of energy. The sky swirled with shades of lavender and silver, with streaks of light darting across it, reflecting in pools of liquid light scattered across the landscape.
Crystalline trees spiraled into weird shapes, each humming with a soft, eerie resonance.
The air itself felt charged, pressing gently against Kay's thoughts as if it carried a faint, invisible pressure.
As Kay entered the dungeon, he released Eevee from its Pokeball and allowed him to walk beside him. Together, they headed towards an area where no other trainers had ventured.
Once they reached a secluded spot, far from prying eyes, Kay released Growlithe from its Pokeball as well. With both Pokemon by his side, he began exploring deeper into the dungeon.
Not long after, they encountered a strange Pokemon. It had a rounded, stocky body with a yellow top that blended into brown legs, resembling a natural suit.
Its half-closed, glowing eyes seemed to peer directly into one's thoughts, and it moved slowly, almost hypnotically, as if it was drawing energy from the air around it.
Kay recognized the Pokemon immediately; it was a Drowzee. Then Kay pulled out his Pokedex and checked its stats.
Drowzee
Potential: Yellow
Stage: Intermediate Steel
"Go, Growlithe, this one is yours! Use Ember!" Kay commanded.
Growlithe jumped forward and unleashed a burst of fiery Ember at the Drowzee.
The attack hit, but the Drowzee didn't seem too fazed. Instead, it began making strange, deliberate movements with its fingers.
Kay's eyes widened as he realized what was happening. "Don't look at it!" he shouted urgently.
Drowzee was using Hypnosis. Eevee reacted quickly, shutting its eyes to avoid the move, but Growlithe wasn't fast enough, so it fell asleep where it stood.
"Eevee, Bite!" Kay ordered urgently, worried that Drowzee might follow up with Dream Eater, a dangerous move for the sleeping Growlithe.
Eevee sprang into action, leaping onto Drowzee and throwing it off balance. The Drowzee staggered, struggling to steady itself.
Eevee didn't give it a chance, lunging at its chest with dark-type energy gathered around its teeth using Bite.
Before Drowzee could recover, Eevee followed up with another Bite to its neck, finishing the battle and killing the psychic Pokemon.
Kay quickly pulled out an Awakening item from his bag and used it on Growlithe. Within moments, Growlithe stirred awake, shaking off the effects of Hypnosis.
Kay let out a breath of relief. 'That was close. I can't believe I forgot about Drowzee's signature move Hypnosis,' Kay thought.
He looked at his two Pokemon, grateful for their quick responses, especially Eevee. "Good work, Eevee. Growlithe, let's stay more alert from now on."
Kay continued his journey deeper into the dungeon, encountering many Psychic-type Pokemons like Abra, Drowzee, Slowpoke, and Exeggcute.
Each battle ended with an easy victory, with Eevee and Growlithe steadily gaining experience. The farther Kay ventured, the stronger the Pokemon became.
Kay eagerly pushed onward, determined to find a challenge that would truly test his team.
After a period of going deeper Kay was now satisfied with the level of Pokemons he encountered.
Eventually, just as Kay and his Pokemons killed a Slowpoke an Abra appeared in front of them, the Abra seemed different from the others; more powerful, almost radiating an intimidating aura. Kay then checked its stats using its Pokedex.
Abra
Potential: Orange
Stage: Inferior Bronze
Kay's eyes widened in disbelief. A Bronze Stage Pokemon in an F-rank dungeon? It was an incredibly rare occurrence.
While it wasn't impossible to encounter Bronze Stage Pokemon in these lower-ranked dungeons, the chances were extremely slim.
For a moment, Kay felt nervous. This was his first time facing a Bronze Stage Pokemon alone, excluding his encounter with the Arcanine.
But even with his confidence in Eevee, he knew this would be a very hard fight.
Kay calculated the odds. Eevee was at the Superior Steel Stage, but the gap between the Steel and Bronze Stages was significant.
Even the gap between two successive substages was big, and Abra and Eevee were from different stages, making the difference even more daunting.
"Eevee, get ready. You'll be taking this one on," Kay said firmly. He then turned to Growlithe, who was standing by his side.
"Growlithe, stay close to me. If Abra tries to attack me directly, I'll need you to protect me. Also, support Eevee with Helping Hand from here."
"Graaaw..." Growlithe barked in understanding, his eyes fixed on Abra.
Kay positioned himself at a safe distance, just close enough for Helping Hand to reach Eevee.
"Growlithe, keep using Helping Hand on Eevee!" Kay commanded. "Eevee, use Quick Attack!"
Eevee shot forward in a zigzag pattern, accelerating toward Abra, who floated gracefully in midair.
Just as Eevee closed the distance and leaped to strike, Abra vanished, using Teleport to dodge the attack.
Abra reappeared behind Eevee and used Confusion, sending Eevee tumbling forward.
Kay clenched his fists. He knew Abra's symbolic move, Teleport, would make this fight incredibly challenging.
Using Dig wouldn't help, as Abra's psychic abilities could easily locate Eevee underground. Kay needed a new strategy.
"Eevee, use Sand Attack, then follow up with Bite!" he called.
Eevee kicked up a cloud of sand toward Abra, but the clever Psychic-type teleported away again.
Kay gritted his teeth, racking his brain for a way to outmaneuver Abra's constant Teleportation. Suddenly, an idea struck him.
"Eevee, use Quick Attack again, but this time, if Abra teleports behind you, use Sand Attack before it can strike!" Kay instructed,
Eevee followed the plan, dashing forward with Quick Attack. As expected, Abra teleported behind Eevee, but this time, Eevee was ready.
It kicked up a flurry of sand instantly into Abra's face. While Abra was distracted, Eevee turned, lunged forward, and hit Abra with Bite.
The attack was devastating. Abra's weak defense and low HP made it vulnerable, and Bite, a Dark-type move, was super effective against the Psychic-type Abra.
With Growlithe supporting Eevee using Helping Hand, the attack's power was amplified even further.
"Eevee, one more time!".
Eevee prepared to repeat the tactic, charging in with Quick Attack. This time, Abra used Reflect to decrease Eevee's physical attack damages before attempting to approach it directly.
When Eevee saw the barrier made by Abra it hesitated momentarily, unsure of what to do.
"Don't stop! Continue the attack!" Kay yelled.
Eevee obeyed, landing a Quick Attack on Abra. However, Abra retaliated quickly, using Confusion again.
Before Eevee could recover, Abra teleported behind it and unleashed another Confusion.
Kay's heart sank as he noticed Eevee stumbling, its movements erratic. 'Eevee is confused,' he realized.
"Eevee, stop moving and just listen to me!" Kay shouted, trying to regain control. "Use Dig and stay underground until I tell you to come out!"
But before Eevee could follow the command, Abra teleported behind it once more and used Psychic.
The powerful move hit Eevee directly, and with Abra's high Special Attack, it was too much for Eevee to endure. Eevee collapsed to the ground, fainting instantly.
