Chapter 59: Mysterious killer

After watching the battle unfold, the opponent fell silent. He stared at his Voltorb, which was still suffering from the effects of Toxic, then glanced at Kay's Eevee, which was already preparing to fight again. He clenched his jaw, deep in thought, before finally sighing.

"I surrender!" he announced.

Kay raised an eyebrow. He wasn't expecting that. The match was clearly in his favor, but most trainers fought until their Pokémons were completely unable to battle. This guy, however, had made a calculated decision.

Kay nodded in understanding. This guy was smart. If he continued fighting, Voltorb would take even more damage, making it much harder to recover before the next battle.

Surrendering now meant he could heal his Pokémon and give it the best chance of winning in the next round. It was the same decision Kay would have made in his place.

As the opponent walked over to his Pokémon, he pulled out a small Potion and an Antidote and began treating Voltorb's wounds. Kay did the same, kneeling next to Eevee and gently applying the Potion.

But then, a sharp, eerie laugh echoed through the corridor.

"KeeeeKeKeKe..."

The opponent flinched and looked around in confusion. Kay, on the other hand, knew exactly where that laugh came from.

A few seconds later, Gengar emerged from the ceiling, its large, mischievous grin spread across its purple face.

Both Kay and the other trainer froze in place.

Kay felt a chill run down his spine, but it wasn't as bad as the first time he encountered Gengar.

However, the other trainer's state was worse than Kay's; his eyes widened in pure terror, his entire body paralyzed with fear.

Gengar floated lazily around them, its red eyes flicking between the two trainers and their Pokémons. Then, after hovering around Kay for a moment, it smirked and winked at him, this wink sent shivers down Kay's spine.

Without saying a word, Gengar snapped his fingers.

A stream of purple light drifted out from Kay's body and floated toward the other player, entering his body.

The moment the light left Kay, he felt incredible. His body felt light as if a weight had been lifted off him. It was as if he was in the best physical condition he had been in years.

And then, just as suddenly as it appeared, Gengar vanished back into the ceiling, disappearing without a trace.

The other trainer was still frozen, his face pale from the shock of what had just happened. Kay smirked.

"At least you aren't trapped in an illusion anymore," Kay said, turning to leave. "So, you should be able to find the other players quickly."

Without looking back, Kay walked deeper into the corridor, leaving the other trainer standing there in silence.

After a few minutes of walking, Kay reached a point where the corridor split into two paths. He stopped and glanced behind him, wondering if the other trainer had caught up yet, and found out that he hadn't.

Kay turned his attention back to the two corridors. One led left, the other right.

Wanting to make an informed decision, he grabbed a Pokéball from his pocket and called out Growlithe.

"Growlithe, I need your help," Kay said, crouching down. "Tell me which corridor has more players inside."

Kay knew that there weren't any right choices; all the choices could be right.

Growlithe barked, "Graaw..." then trotted over to the left corridor, lowering its nose to the ground and sniffing the air. After a few moments, it moved toward the right corridor and began sniffing again.

But this time, something changed. The moment Growlithe caught a whiff of whatever was in the right corridor, its body tensed. Its ears flattened, and it let out a sharp, aggressive bark. "Graaaw!"

Kay narrowed his eyes. Something was wrong.

Growlithe turned to him, barking harshly while pointing toward the right corridor with its head. It was trying to warn him.

Kay sighed. "Something dangerous, huh?"

Unlike Eevee, Growlithe hadn't been with Kay as long, meaning their bond wasn't as strong.

Kay could understand its general emotions, but not the exact details of what it was sensing. He knew Growlithe was warning him about a threat, but he didn't know what kind of threat.

Still, danger often meant high rewards in this tournament.

Kay smiled slightly, patting Growlithe's head. "Good job, buddy. You can rest now."

He returned Growlithe to its Pokéball and took a deep breath. Then, without hesitation, he stepped into the right corridor.

Even though he was heading toward danger, he remained on high alert.

He knew that the strongest Pokémons in the labyrinth were in the Superior Steel stage. He had already fought against Pokémons of that level before.

Kay moved deeper into the right corridor, his senses on high alert. The air felt heavy, and the darkness made it even harder for him to detect what was ahead.

After a few moments of walking, Eevee suddenly stopped in its tracks. Its large ears twitched, and it lifted its nose, sniffing the air carefully. Its body tensed, and it turned toward Kay, its eyes serious.

Kay crouched down as Eevee let out a series of small sounds, explaining what it had picked up.

Blood.

Pokémon had an incredible sense of smell of blood, and Eevee was no exception. It could detect the scent of blood from great distances. If Eevee had noticed it now, that meant the source was still far ahead.

Kay made a quick decision. Instead of walking, he would run quietly. The sooner he found out what had happened, the better.

Kay moved swiftly, his footsteps light against the stone floor. The corridor stretched endlessly in front of him, twisting and turning. Five minutes passed, and then the smell hit him.

It was faint at first, but within seconds, it became unmistakable. The sharp, metallic scent of blood filled the air, making Kay's stomach tighten.

Then, just ahead, something was lying on the floor.

Kay slowed down, approaching cautiously. As he got closer, the dim light revealed the shape of a body. A man.

His clothes were soaked in dark red blood, his face pale and lifeless.

Kay's eyes moved to the wound on the man's neck; deep bite marks, as if something had torn into him.

Beside the man lay his Pokémon. A male Nidoran that was also, dead.

Eevee's ears twitched again, and it suddenly raised its head, looking further down the corridor.

Kay understood immediately. This wasn't the only body.

Without wasting time, he moved forward, stepping over the first corpse and continuing down the passage.

His heart pounded as he spotted another body. Another person, another Pokémon, both lifeless, both covered in blood. And once again, the same bite marks on the human's neck.

Kay knelt next to the corpse, his mind racing. This wasn't just a battle gone wrong. Something had killed these people with precision. Something fast, something strong.

He needed to be ready.

Reaching down, he dipped his fingers into the pool of blood near the body. Without hesitation, he smeared it across his face and clothes, making sure he was covered in the scent. Then, he did the same to Eevee.

Eevee shuddered at the feeling, letting out a soft whimper of discomfort.

Kay placed a hand on its head, his voice calm but firm. "Be patient. I think this will protect us and help us face whatever is ahead."

Eevee stared at him for a moment, then nodded slightly, accepting the situation.

Kay took a deep breath and then stood up.
