"Let's do it then, a Pokémon battle!"
Although Cyclizar didn't remember any moves, Hoshino was still very confident. As long as he believed in his Pokémon, it would be enough!
"Cy-cla?"
Hearing his call, Cyclizar stopped chasing wild Nacli and happily pounced on him, biting his head—a clear sign of affection, it seemed...
Hoshino struggled free and turned to Hala, asking, "So, who am I battling?"
"Hmm… I originally planned for my grandson to battle you. He's the same age as you and a fourth-year student at the Pokémon School. It would've been a good match. But since it's the weekend, he's out with friends… So, I've decided!"
"Huh?"
"I'll be your opponent. Defeat me, and I'll acknowledge your strength!"
"???"
Hoshino was baffled. He thought he'd misheard, but no, he hadn't. He was about to battle an Island Kahuna? Wait, isn't the Kahuna supposed to be the strongest Trainer on the island?!
Seeing his confusion, Hala laughed heartily. "Don't worry. Since you're a beginner, I won't use my full strength!"
"That's not the problem!"
Even if he held back, a Kahuna was still a Kahuna! But there was no choice—this battle was necessary. He'd treat it like a tutorial.
Hala led them to the festival stage in the town center. Hoshino noticed the white patterns around, realizing this was likely a sacred platform for ceremonies honoring Tapu Koko, the island's guardian deity.
Slowking didn't follow them, seemingly off to handle other matters—not that anyone was worried Hoshino would run away...
"Let's battle here. Are you ready?"
"Ready!"
Hoshino looked at Cyclizar, wagging its tail excitedly. Though a bit nervous, he was already strategizing how to utilize Cyclizar's physical abilities to fight without relying on moves.
"Don't mess around—listen to my commands!"
"Cy-cla!"
Once everything was set, Hala's expression turned serious. He tossed a Poké Ball, releasing a Crabrawler that aggressively waved its pincers, taunting Cyclizar.
"Coincidence? Or fate?"
Hoshino didn't expect another Crabrawler. He'd just beaten one two nights ago. Well, at least he had experience.
"Let's go!"
"Cy-cla!"
Cyclizar burst forward with explosive speed, charging headfirst. Hala's eyes suddenly widened as if he'd noticed something. He waved his hand, shouting, "Dodge to the right and use Power-Up Punch!"
Hearing Hala's command, Hoshino quickly countered, "Keep up the speed—swing your tail!"
Normally, most Pokémon would struggle to react in time. But yesterday, Cyclizar had pulled off a sharp turn at full speed without losing momentum. Maybe it could do this too!
And Cyclizar delivered. As Crabrawler sidestepped, Cyclizar executed a flawless 180-degree spin, slamming its tail into Crabrawler's face, sending it flying over ten meters into a large rock…
The battle ended in an instant. Crabrawler was knocked out cold with just one tail strike—a sheer display of overwhelming strength. This seemingly goofy lizard was no joke.
"Victory~"
Hoshino flashed a peace sign. If Cyclizar could one-shot a Crabrawler before, it could definitely do it again—unless they threw in a Crabominable next.
But as his first battle against another Trainer, ending it so easily left him feeling a little unsatisfied.
Watching Cyclizar happily trot back, Hoshino grew curious—just how strong had Cyclizar been before it lost its memory?
If possible, he needed to help it recover those memories.
Hala recalled Crabrawler and laughed heartily as he approached. "I misjudged you. I didn't expect Cyclizar to be hiding such strength, and you commanded it flawlessly."
"So, that means I win, right?"
"Of course. Your reaction speed was also impressive. Seems like you have a natural talent for being a Trainer. Keep working hard. Here, take this Poké Ball as a gift."
Hala took out a Poké Ball and handed it over. Hoshino reached out to accept it, feeling a surge of excitement as he stared at the red-and-white sphere in his hand.
"Don't just stand there—go catch your starter Pokémon!"
"Got it!"
Hoshino approached Cyclizar, raised the Poké Ball, and said, "I can finally become your Trainer. Here—"
Before he could finish, Cyclizar suddenly bit down on his hand—Poké Ball and all.
"OW OW OW!!"
"This isn't food, let go… LET GO! My hand's gonna snap!"
"Cy-cla~"
Seeing this scene, Hala burst into laughter. "You two really get along well. This is how Pokémon and Trainers should be!"
After some struggle, Hoshino finally freed his hand, sporting an exasperated smile. He was completely resigned to his big lizard's antics.
Raising the Poké Ball again, this time Cyclizar didn't bite. Instead, it happily lifted a paw and smacked the Poké Ball.
In an instant, a flash of red light enveloped Cyclizar, pulling it into the ball. A crisp "ding" sounded, signaling a successful capture without even a single shake.
"Is it because of the high affection level?"
Hoshino was a little surprised, but it didn't matter. The friend-bond interface now displayed Cyclizar's small icon, confirming that he had officially become its Trainer!
Just as he was getting excited, the Poké Ball in his hand shook. With another flash of red light, Cyclizar popped out, stretching lazily. It clearly didn't enjoy being inside the Poké Ball.
The battle was done, and Cyclizar was officially his. The next step was handling his identification.
With Hala, the Island Kahuna, leading the way, this should've been a simple process… but of course, it wasn't.
When they arrived at the Hau'oli City Police Station, Hoshino immediately spotted his own wanted poster flashing across a big screen—photo only, no name.
"Why are you wanted?" Hala asked, bewildered.
"Uh… I accidentally hit someone while speeding yesterday."
"Who did you hit?"
"Officer Jenny…"
"…"
Hala was speechless. How many layers of bad luck could this pile up to? How were they going to clear this up?
But as the Island Kahuna of Melemele, Hala was committed to fairness and justice—though special cases were an exception.
He brought Hoshino and Cyclizar to the Officer Jenny in charge, explained the situation, and endured a one-hour-long lecture that left Hoshino mentally numb.
In the end, Officer Jenny finally let him off with a stern warning: "Considering your special circumstances, the fact that you're a minor, and this being your first offense, you'll just need to apologize sincerely to the Officer Jenny you hit. Then write a 10,000-word reflection essay before you're allowed to leave. But don't let this happen again!"
"Yes, ma'am…"
"Also, Pokémon must wear riding gear to be ridden within city limits. For first-time offenders without the gear, Trainers can obtain a set after studying traffic laws at the DMV using their Trainer ID."
"Huh?"
Hoshino's eyes lit up. Trainers could get a free set of riding gear? The perks were this good?
After completing all the procedures, he officially became a legal resident of Alola, complete with identification.
Hala also took care of his school enrollment. Strangely enough, despite it being the weekend, Hala seemed eager to get it done—as if afraid Hoshino might disappear.
With enrollment settled, he immediately got his Trainer ID, which also served as an official form of identification. It could be reissued if lost.
And just like that, he was now a bona fide Pokémon Trainer. His Trainer ID marked him as a "Rookie," and according to Hala, it could only be upgraded after graduating from Pokémon School.
"Let's go home!"
With everything sorted, Hoshino couldn't wait to celebrate with Cyclizar. But just as they were about to leave, Officer Jenny grabbed him by the collar.
"Eh?"
"Finish your 10,000-word reflection essay before you go!"
"…"
