The battle ended, and Charmander emerged victorious.
With a single, well-placed Flamethrower, it defeated its opponent in one hit, sealing the outcome decisively. As the flames subsided and victory was secured, a radiant white light enveloped Charmander's body.
Witnessing this, Madison felt a pang of helplessness. This whole battle had clearly been staged to push Charmander toward evolution.
Nearby, Gallade observed the transformation with a flicker of surprise in its eyes. This was perfect timing—when they returned, Evan wouldn't be able to accuse them of wasting time during their outing.
The glow faded, revealing a newly evolved Charmeleon. Its eyes now gleamed with a brighter hue, its golden chest looked more imposing, and the flame on its tail burned with intensified vigor.
"Charrr!" Charmeleon roared enthusiastically. It opened its mouth and unleashed a fiery jet toward the sky, a triumphant display of its newfound strength. However, a beam of red light swiftly enveloped it, returning it to the confines of its Poké Ball.
Gallade, silent as ever, pocketed the Poké Ball and turned toward Madison, who was now walking over.
Once she reached Gallade, she handed over a badge shaped like a droplet of water. "Here, this is your badge."
Gallade nodded appreciatively. "Thank you," it conveyed telepathically as it reached out to accept the badge.
Madison smiled faintly. "You can visit the front desk for a badge case," she added. "They're free."
Gallade's eyes lit up at the prospect, and Isla chuckled. "This is just the first badge," she continued. "You'll need to let your trainer know. For the second or third badges, you'll need to keep training. The first one is simple enough for most trainers to obtain, but the difficulty ramps up significantly after this."
She glanced pointedly at Gallade. "Even with Charmeleon and Pikachu, the next challenges might be beyond you unless your trainer is more involved."
Gallade frowned slightly but nodded again, signaling its understanding. Without another word, it vanished with a swift Teleport.
Moments later, it reappeared at the front desk, where it quickly procured a badge case. As it teleported away again, Madison sighed in exasperation. "Always in such a rush," she murmured, shaking her head. Despite her grumbling, a spark of anticipation flickered in her expression. "Maybe I'll see that Pokémon in this year's National Championships... The battle of Elites," she mused, her voice tinged with hope.
Meanwhile, Gallade appeared in a secluded area on the outskirts of Zenith City. There, it released Gardevoir and its other Pokémon companions, Charmeleon included.
"You heard what the gym leader said," Gallade began, addressing the team. "Pikachu, Charmeleon—you need to train harder to prepare for the battles ahead. Do you understand?"
Charmeleon and Pikachu nodded eagerly, their determination evident. Gallade continued, "For now, the battles in the early gyms will be handled by the two of you, along with Pidgeot. Lurantis will remain on standby until we receive further instructions from Evan."
Gallade's gaze lingered on the team for a moment. "Our trainer will decide when it's time to bring Lurantis into the fray. Until then, we must focus on refining our strengths."
After a brief discussion, Gallade recalled Charmeleon and Pikachu, mounted Pidgeot, and began the flight back to the breeding house. The entire excursion, including the gym battle, had taken less than three hours.
Upon returning, Gallade dismounted and released Gardevoir and the others. It scanned the area and spotted Evan instructing Luna and the other students on how to craft energy cubes.
Gallade paused briefly, then handed the badge case to Gardevoir for safekeeping before leading Charmeleon to the workshop. Evan, noticing their approach, momentarily froze in surprise.
"Evolved already?" Evan asked, his tone equal parts astonished and pleased.
"Charrr!" Charmeleon exclaimed, bounding over to Evan with excitement. It flexed dramatically, showing off its newfound strength with an eager gleam in its eyes.
Charmeleon was overjoyed when he heard Evan's shout.
He ran directly to Evan's feet and made a Bulk Up gesture.
Then he started talking.
"CharrrChar~!"
He had evolved while battling a Water type Pokémon.
"I'm stronger now."
Charmeleon was clearly ecstatic.
However, it was a bit sneaky and didn't disclose exactly which Pokémon it had fought.
Instead, it vaguely mentioned the water type. This was to avoid revealing the truth.
If it had admitted to fighting a silly turtle, Evan would undoubtedly ask if that Pokémon had been captured.
After all, it belonged to the starter Pokémon families.
With his master's persistent nature, Evan wouldn't let the matter rest.
He might even investigate it to the end.
So, Charmeleon only mentioned a Water-type Pokémon.
Hearing this, Evan nodded.
"Really not bad."
"I'll give you extra food tonight."
"Thank you."
"Go and rest."
This was truly wonderful news, wasn't it?
Evan hadn't expected the little guy to evolve after being out for just a short while.
It seemed they should be allowed to go out more often in the future.
Yes, that sounded right.
Evan let the two Pokémon go outside to play and then resumed his work.
Colton's energy cubes were fully prepared.
Now, it was just a matter of waiting for him to come and collect them.
Charmeleon and Gallade exchanged relieved glances after leaving.
Fortunately, their master hadn't suspected anything.
The two Pokémon soon ran outside and began discussing the situation with Hoothoot.
It wasn't long before they started training together.
For Evan's Badge, they decided to discipline themselves and grow stronger!
Lurantis joined them in training.
It, too, wanted to participate in the gym battle.
Evan finished preparing the energy cubes and came outside. When he saw the Pokémon training hard, he didn't pay much attention.
He simply thought they were very diligent.
The next day, Colton came to Evan again.
Seeing the energy cubes Evan had prepared, he was thrilled.
"Really not bad."
"From now on, I'll leave my energy cube needs to you."
"By the way, Evan, do you guarantee delivery?"
"If I'm traveling, I won't be able to come to your place. Shouldn't you consider a door-to-door delivery service?"
Colton began offering Evan suggestions.
He thought it would be an excellent idea if Evan could deliver goods directly.
Hearing this, Evan was filled with questions.
"You want me to deliver goods to your door?"
"Don't you think you're overthinking this?"
Evan was speechless.
What was this?
Delivery to your door? Did Colton want a punch to go with it?
Colton shrugged.
"What I said is just the truth."
"Think about it, your store's business must be good, right?"
"But if people want your energy cubes regularly, they can't always come here, can they?"
"People travel, you know."
"If you could deliver, you might get more repeat customers."
Without a delivery option, you'd lose out on a lot of potential clients.
If Evan offered door-to-door delivery, many people would be willing to customize energy cubes regularly.
Hearing this, Evan fell into deep thought.
After pondering for a while, he said:
"Let's talk about this later."
"If it doesn't work, you can always call for express delivery."
