The rain prayers performed by the many Water Pokémon summoned by Evan only covered the orchard and some mountains behind it.
The Grass-type Pokémon in the orchard hurriedly ran out at this time, all heading towards the breeding house to take shelter from the rain.
Evan stood in the rain, using Psychic to block the water from falling on him, watching the scene quietly.
Although the rain wasn't heavy, it provided enough moisture to rejuvenate the fruits in the orchard. Leaves that had become wilted from the dry, hot weather now looked vibrant and full of life again.
At the same time, Evan began to ponder.
"Should a channel be built from the other side of the lake to reach these orchards?" he thought. "On quieter days, the Water Pokémon could spray some water over them as needed. That might work well."
After thinking for a while, Evan made up his mind. He decided to enlist the help of Ground-type Pokémon to construct the channels.
There were plenty of Dugtrio in Evan's backyard, and those little Pokémon were more than capable of accomplishing this task.
"There's no need to bring water from the lake," he mused. "A few small streams will do. The spring water from the mountain naturally flows downward. Some areas just need better irrigation to prevent them from drying out."
With his plan set, Evan was ready to act.
By now, the light rain from the Water Pokémon had stopped. Despite its large coverage, the rain was just a temporary skill they had performed. After about five minutes, it was over.
As the rain ended, the Water Pokémon prepared to continue their efforts, but Evan stopped them.
"Stop," he called. "That's enough. You can go back now."
Hearing his instructions, the Water Pokémon exchanged glances, then nodded and returned to the lake.
The rainwater was quickly absorbed by the soil, but the air turned humid and sticky again, like a sauna. Despite it not being June or July, the heat was still intense.
Evan walked to the back mountain and sought out a Beedrill to inquire about the Dugtrio's current whereabouts.
Before he could get a response, Dugtrio popped out of the ground, causing Evan to smile in amusement.
He decided to forego asking Beedrill and turned his attention to Dugtrio instead.
"Dugtrio," he began, "I need your help. Can you gather all the other Ground-type Pokémon for me?"
Dugtrio nodded enthusiastically, responding with a cheerful, "Zhizhizhi~~!"
Without hesitation, Dugtrio burrowed back into the ground. Before long, the soil around Evan began to shift, and Ground-type Pokémon emerged one by one.
The group was mostly made up of Dugtrio, with a few Sandslash mixed in. Evan smiled at the sight and explained his purpose.
"I need your help to dig a creek," he said. "It should branch off from the river over there and flow toward the orchard on the other side. That area is the driest and needs the most water."
The Ground Pokémon nodded in understanding.
"This creek doesn't need to be too wide," Evan continued. "It should be just enough for a Sandslash to lie down in."
As he spoke, he gently nudged a Sandslash to lie down as a demonstration, drawing a rough outline in the soil to indicate the desired width.
Sandslash looked confused but complied, while the other Pokémon quickly understood the measurement.
"If anyone's unsure," he added with a smile, "just use Sandslash as your guide."
The Ground Pokémon chuckled and nodded in agreement.
"As for the depth," Evan said, "it doesn't need to be too deep…"
"Well, Diglett's height is just right," Evan said with a smile. "Does that make sense to everyone?"
The Ground-type Pokémon nodded in understanding.
Seeing their enthusiasm, Evan laughed. "Alright then, let's get started! Begin digging from the river and follow the route I pointed out. Just be careful not to damage any of my fruit trees—stay as far away from them as possible."
With Evan's instructions clear, the Ground-type Pokémon got to work. Under his direction, they began digging furiously into the earth, moving far faster than any excavator could manage.
In just half an hour, a channel running through the orchard and connecting to the mountain's backside was completed. However, the rivers and lakes weren't linked yet.
"Okay, Sandslash," Evan called, "head up there and use your moves to clear out the leftover dirt blocking the flow. I'll handle the rest and open up the final section to let the water through."
One of the Sandslash nodded and scurried away to follow his instructions. The other Ground-type Pokémon positioned themselves along both sides of the channel, watching Evan intently.
Without hesitation, Evan used Psychic to clear the remaining soil in front of him, creating a complete connection to the river. As the water began to flow, he nodded in satisfaction.
Meanwhile, Sandslash finished clearing the dirt, completing its task with remarkable speed, and hurried back to Evan.
Everyone waited silently for the water to start flowing through the newly dug channel. Although the stream was small, it was enough to provide the orchard with consistent hydration. The diverted water would seep into the soil, nourishing the fruit trees and preventing future droughts.
"Thank you all very much," Evan said warmly, addressing the Ground-type Pokémon. "Next time, I'll prepare extra food for you."
Excitement rippled through the group of Pokémon. Recently, the Grass, Water, and Bug-type Pokémon nearby had been receiving extra food, including energy cubes that were rumored to be delicious. Now, it seemed their turn had finally come.
With cheerful cries, the Ground-type Pokémon expressed their joy. Evan's smile widened as he watched their reactions.
"Good," he said to himself. "Tomorrow, I'll teach Isla and the others how to make Ground-type energy cubes. Even if some batches don't turn out perfectly, these Pokémon will still benefit from them. Who knows? They might even grow stronger!"
Content with the day's progress, Evan was about to head back when a sudden roar echoed from the back mountain.
His expression shifted into a frown. That sound was unlike anything he'd heard from the Pokémon living in the area. It was harsh, almost menacing—something no Pokémon in his mountains would ever make unprovoked.
" Gardevoir!" he called.
At his call, Gardevoir appeared beside him in a flash of light.
"Garde!" Gardevoir cried, ready for instructions.
"Let's go check it out," Evan said firmly, gripping Gardevoir's hand.
Gardevoir nodded, and with a swift Teleport, they vanished from the spot.
As soon as they disappeared, the Ground-type Pokémon, sensing trouble, began rushing toward the source of the noise. Evan had made it clear that any intruder threatening their home or companions wouldn't be tolerated. They were ready to defend their territory, no matter the cost.
Not just the Ground-types—Pokémon from all over the area, alerted by the commotion, started converging on the scene.
Leading the charge was the tribe of Pidgeot, their powerful wings carrying them swiftly toward the source of the roar.
