Chapter 95: 95. Evolutions
The stone appeared to be a Water Stone. Though it was unclear who was helping them, Ash and Eddie had no time to search for this mysterious benefactor.
Thanks to the evolution, Poliwrath was revitalized, and its Condition improved dramatically.
"Perfect timing! Poliwrath! Use Dynamic Punch!" Eddie commanded.
Poliwrath regained control of its body, pushed off the cruise ship's railing, and launched itself toward Electabuzz.
From the moment Poliwhirl was struck by Thunder, fell, made contact with the Water Stone to evolve, and then launched its attack—all these events occurred in rapid succession within mere seconds.
Electabuzz hadn't fully processed what was happening before Poliwrath's fist connected with its face. Despite being generally stronger than Poliwrath, this surprise attack—reminiscent of a Sucker Punch—knocked Electabuzz out cold, sending it crashing onto the deck of the cruise ship.
With the threat of Electabuzz temporarily neutralized and no Pokémon left on Raichu's side to rescue it, Raichu's situation became dire.
After Charizard's devastating Flare Blitz tackle, Raichu's pitiful cry was abruptly silenced as it was sent flying through another deck. With a thunderous crash, it plummeted an unknown number of floors below.
"Ding! Seven Pokémon worked together to defeat Raichu, and the experience was shared!"
"Ding! Charizard gained experience, level +3! Reached lv39!"
"Ding! Frogadier gained experience, level +4! Reached lv39!"
"Ding! Riolu gained experience, level +4! Reached lv39! Learned Nasty Plot!"
"Ding! Grovyle gained experience, level +4! Reached lv39! Learned Detect!"
The battle spanning a 10-level difference yielded enormous experience, but since seven Pokémon had worked together to secure the victory, the experience had to be divided. Nevertheless, after sharing, Eddie's Pokémon each gained several levels, making a significant difference in their overall strength.
"Damn it! You brat, this battle isn't over yet!!" Lt. Surge shouted.
Seeing that Raichu had lost its fighting capability, Lt. Surge quickly grabbed a Poké Ball from his belt and hurled it into the fray.
He had established that there were no rules in this battle and that life and death weren't important considerations, so it was only natural for him to send out additional Pokémon.
A Magneton appeared, its power only slightly inferior to Raichu's. With a powerful Discharge, it repelled the Frog that was about to finish off Electabuzz.
Name: Magneton Level: (peak) Level 45
"Lt. Surge, you're so careless. If you hadn't let the situation get out of hand, wouldn't it be too late to intervene now?" Eddie taunted.
In reality, Eddie understood that the battlefield had transformed rapidly just moments ago. Lt. Surge had already reacted impressively fast by sending Electabuzz to the rescue, leaving no spare time to deploy Magneton.
Besides, Lt. Surge had been confident that his two Pokémon could defeat Eddie and Ash, but their unexpected teamwork and coordination had overcome Raichu—something he never anticipated.
Yet understanding the situation didn't mean Eddie couldn't use trash talk to irritate and distract Lt. Surge.
"You kid, I admit I underestimated you, but don't think you'll win next time. I won't be careless again. Enjoy your last... what?!"
Lt. Surge's expression finally lost its arrogant smirk. He had adopted a more serious demeanor, but just as he was about to declare his intention to go all out, he froze in astonishment.
Both Frogadier and Grovyle were emitting intense bursts of light.
He had witnessed this radiance just moments ago when it enveloped the Water-type frog Pokémon.
"Ding! Congratulations! Your Frogadier evolved into Greninja! Learned Water Shuriken!"
"Ding! Congratulations! Your Grovyle evolved into Sceptile! Learned Double Slash!"
Not only Lt. Surge but everyone watching the battle was stunned. Just moments earlier, the Water-type Pokémon had evolved thanks to a Water Stone, and now both Frogadier and Grovyle were evolving on the spot. Three Pokémon evolving in one chaotic battle.
Such a phenomenon was rare, perhaps even unheard of. Of course, had they known that Charizard had also just evolved, they would have been even more amazed.
However, anyone with a discerning eye could see that with the evolution of these two Pokémon, the battle had clearly shifted against Lt. Surge's favor.
The stark difference between Pokémon before and after evolution was evident from how the newly evolved Water-type had just overpowered Electabuzz. In its previous form, even with a sneak attack, it couldn't have bested the Electric-type so decisively.
"Damn it! More evolutions, and two at once!"
Even Lt. Surge couldn't help cursing at this turn of events. It was no longer feasible for him to defeat Eddie and Ash with just two Pokémon.
He felt like an experience dispenser. First, it was Charizard and Poliwhirl, and now Greninja and Sceptile.
"No, we need to regroup first. It seems I must use my final Pokémon, or we truly can't win."
Lt. Surge immediately signaled for Electabuzz and Magneton to retreat as he reached for the last Poké Ball on his belt.
"You still want to regroup? Dream on!"
"Charizard! Greninja! Sceptile! Riolu! Take them down!"
Eddie led the offensive. Regardless of what Lt. Surge's last Pokémon might be, their priority was to eliminate another threat immediately.
Ash understood this strategy. After his frog Pokémon—revitalized by evolution but having exhausted its strength—lost its combat effectiveness, he promptly ordered Ivysaur and Pikachu to follow Eddie's lead in the attack.
The aggressive Charizard unleashed another Fire Blast, while Riolu coordinated with a Focus Blast.
Their target was naturally the Electric/Steel-type Magneton. Not only was it the most vulnerable Pokémon on Lt. Surge's side, but Fire and Fighting-type attacks could inflict super-effective damage against Steel types.
Meanwhile, Sceptile and Greninja both converged on Electabuzz, assaulting it with Leaf Blade and Lick. Their goal wasn't to defeat it outright but to prevent it from aiding Magneton.
"Do you think my Magneton is a pushover? You must be joking! Let me show you its true power. Magneton! Zap Cannon!"
Lt. Surge roared, his face contorted with rage. How could he not be furious when a battle he had considered a certain victory had turned so dramatically against him?
But he had no time to release another Pokémon now. If he continued to issue commands, his current Pokémon would be defeated instantly.
Magneton's body pulsed with electrical energy, rapidly gathering power before condensing it into a sphere of electrical energy and launching it toward Charizard and Riolu.
It was clear that Lt. Surge not only aimed to attack but also to disrupt Charizard and Riolu's offensive. If successful, he could both damage and paralyze them, turning the tables once more.
In this kind of intense battle, the roles of hunter and prey could reverse at any moment.
