Pokémon: I’m Really Not a Team Rocket Spy

Chapter 25: Chapter 25: The White Demon Brings Good Luck

After the conversation, Maki glanced at the time—it was already late. Deciding it was time to leave, he refrained from staying any longer, fearing that if Anders found him, it might end with a direct "Final Gambit."

The operation was scheduled to begin in four days, and league members would be arriving in the meantime. For Maki, the remaining time was precious.

However, he now had a trump card—Giovanni had entrusted him with a Champion-level Dragonite!

Though, as per Sabrina's relayed message, the Dragonite was only temporarily lent to him for protection and would need to be returned later.

As for how he might "accidentally" get involved in the upcoming incident, Maki wasn't worried. With Sabrina on his side, everything was under control.

"I'll head to the Pokémon Center now. If anything comes up, just let me know. It's not convenient for me to visit the Gym every day, especially after Elite Four members like Agatha arrive."

Maki carefully stowed the purple Poké Ball containing Dragonite before standing up.

"You could just stay here," Sabrina suggested.

Maki glanced at Sabrina's bed. It was quite large—enough to fit two people comfortably.

"Wouldn't that be inappropriate?" Maki teased with a playful glint in his eye.

"I meant there are plenty of unused rooms in the Gym," Sabrina replied, a faint blush momentarily appearing on her usually cold face before her expression returned to its usual calm. Had Maki not known her so well, he might have thought he was seeing things.

"It's better to avoid suspicion. Things aren't exactly peaceful in Saffron City lately. If anything happens, Uncle Anders, as the Gym Leader, will be the first suspect, followed by you. You should also be extra cautious these days, Sabrina."

Maki spoke earnestly. Given the current situation, with Team Rocket's presence in Saffron City potentially being exposed at any moment, Sabrina, who stood at the storm's center, needed to tread carefully.

"Fine. Head to the Pokémon Center, and I'll use my psychic powers to teleport you back later. That way, no one will know you're staying at the Gym. You'll also have free access to all the facilities here," Sabrina offered.

"Don't you usually have a lot of psychic apprentices training here?" Maki looked around in surprise. Despite their long conversation, no one had interrupted them once.

"I sent them away a few days ago. Right now, it's just the two of us in the entire Gym," Sabrina explained.

"…"

Clearing out an entire Gym would normally raise suspicion in the League. But if Sabrina did it, no one would bat an eye—it was just her being her usual self. In fact, if Sabrina ever acted normal, that would be the real cause for concern.

Maki couldn't help but think how Sabrina's quirks had turned into an advantage.

"I'll escort you out," Sabrina said, her hand glowing faintly blue with psychic energy—the power countless trainers dreamed of mastering.

"Wait! I can—"

Before Maki could finish, he found himself abruptly teleported outside the Gym. The sudden shift in orientation caused him to land on the ground with a thud.

"Ow…" Maki rubbed his sore backside as he scrambled to his feet. Luckily, the pavement was flat and smooth; otherwise, the fall could've been worse.

He realized this little tumble was probably Sabrina's playful revenge for him not visiting her in Saffron City for so long, even though she wouldn't admit it.

Maki's ungraceful exit naturally drew the attention of nearby passersby. People stared at him, whispering among themselves.

"Did that person just get kicked out by her? And he's fine?"

"Today must be one of her 'better moods.' The last challenger got spun around in the air a few times before being put down!"

"Careful, her 'mood' rarely improves. Why don't you go inside and try your luck?"

"…I was just joking! I value my life."

"That guy is pretty lucky."

While the crowd murmured, no one dared speak too loudly. After all, Sabrina might still be watching. Badmouthing her and getting caught would be disastrous.

Maki, unfazed by the attention, casually dusted off his pants and confidently walked away. Leaving the Gym in one piece was already an achievement in Saffron City.

As the onlookers dispersed, Maki headed toward the Pokémon Center. The distance wasn't far—likely a deliberate design choice. Even the arena was located near the Center, ensuring injured Pokémon could receive treatment promptly.

After registering with Nurse Joy, Maki walked to his assigned room, unlocked the door, and stepped inside.

'Teleporting now.'

Sabrina's voice echoed in his mind, the product of her psychic abilities.

Closing the door behind him, Maki nodded in acknowledgment. A moment later, he vanished from the room.

The scenery shifted, but instead of returning to Sabrina's room, he found himself in a different, neatly arranged space—it seemed she had prepared this room specifically for him.

"This room looks fine," Maki remarked, surveying the space. "Certainly better than the cramped rooms at the Pokémon Center."

Without hesitation, he threw himself backward onto the bed, arms and legs spread out like a starfish.

The Pokémon Center's accommodations were free and unlimited in duration, but luxurious they were not. Maki knew it wasn't charity either; as a member of the League's inner circle, his "parents" paid a hefty sum each year to secure his status—real money for a fake identity.

After a quick stretch, he noticed a doll in Sabrina's arms and said, surprised, "You still have that?"

It was a Pachirisu doll, modeled after the adorable Electric-type Pokémon native to Sinnoh. Popular among young female trainers, it seemed out of place for someone like Sabrina.

"You said it would bring me good luck, so I've kept it," Sabrina replied, loosening her grip to reveal the doll in full.

Maki chuckled, shaking his head. It was just a Pachirisu doll he'd picked up years ago at a roadside shop, joking that "the White Demon brings good fortune" when he gave it to her.

"If you like it, keep it. By the way, I'll need to borrow your training facilities," Maki said.

Sabrina nodded indifferently, her gaze briefly lingering on the doll. Unbeknownst to Maki, she'd kept it not because of his comment, but because it was a rare, treasured gift from him—a reminder of a simpler time.
