Chapter 25: A Slight Problem
The carriage touched down gently in the square of Nahir as Corviknight released its grip on the reinforced bar and let out a low, commanding caw. Daniel stepped down first, steadying the carriage before turning to look at Elizabeth, who was sound asleep on the seat, her small form wrapped around Squirtle who was contentedly sleeping in her arms.
Daniel turned to Corviknight. "Keep an eye on her, alright? I won't be long."
Corviknight tilted its head, letting out another caw of acknowledgment as its sharp eyes scanned the surroundings.
Satisfied, Daniel turned to Ben, who was already stepping down from the carriage, his bag slung over his shoulder. "Let's go and see if we can talk to the Town Council about setting up shop."
Ben nodded, adjusting the strap of his bag. "This should be interesting," he said, his tone light.
---
They made their way to the Elder's meeting house, a sturdy stone building near the center of Nahir that served as the heart of decision-making for the town. Pushing open the door, he saw the Elders seated around a long wooden table, deep in discussion.
Daniel hesitated. "I didn't mean to interrupt. I can come back later—"
One of the Elders, an older man with a kindly expression, waved dismissively. "Nonsense, Daniel. Come in. We were just discussing something that concerns you as well."
Daniel exchanged a glance with Ben before stepping inside. They were offered seats at the table, and the Elders quickly brought them up to speed.
---
"The town has been seeing more visitors lately," one of the Elders began, his tone thoughtful. "News of the Pokémon has spread faster than we expected. While this has brought us new opportunities and curious travelers, it's also caused a few issues."
Another Elder, a woman with sharp eyes, leaned forward. "People are bonding with Pokémon in increasing numbers, which we all agree is wonderful. However, many have taken to battling their Pokémon in the streets. These impromptu battles are causing property damage, and while manageable now, it's only a matter of time before things escalate. We need a designated place for these battles, far enough from the town or at least within a secure enough environment to prevent further disruptions."
Daniel frowned, his brow furrowing in thought. "That's... not ideal," he admitted. "Pokémon battles are an important part of their growth, but they need to be conducted responsibly." He tapped a finger on the table, mulling over the problem.
After a moment, Daniel turned to Ben, who sat quietly beside him, observing the discussion. An idea began to form in Daniel's mind, and a small smile played on his lips.
"Actually," Daniel said, straightening, "this might solve more than one problem. Elders, let me introduce Ben. He's a merchant I've hired to work exclusively for me. He's here to help sell Pokémon-related items and support the growing interest in Pokémon."
The Elders exchanged glances, nodding politely at Ben, though it was clear they didn't fully understand the connection.
Daniel continued, his tone more animated. "What if we built a Pokémon Center here in Nahir? A place where people can heal their Pokémon and purchase items, all under one roof. And behind the center, we could construct a proper battle stadium—enclosed, with a strong foundation and seating for spectators. It would give trainers a safe place to battle while also providing resources and first-aid for their Pokémon."
The Elders murmured among themselves, intrigued but cautious. "A Pokémon Center?" one asked. "How would this work?"
Ben leaned toward Daniel and whispered, "Daniel, I'm a merchant, not a healer. Selling items I can do, but healing others, let alone Pokémon, isn't exactly my expertise."
Daniel chuckled, realizing the misunderstanding. "Don't worry, Ben. Healing Pokémon won't require any special skill on your part. I'll provide a capsule device—a simple item that allows you to place a Pokéball containing an injured Pokémon inside. The machine will handle the healing automatically in a short time."
Ben's eyes widened slightly. "Now that's something. Alright, I can work with that."
Turning back to the Elders, Daniel explained the plan in more detail. "The Pokémon Center would provide everything trainers need, and the stadium would keep battles away from the streets, protecting the town from damage. I'll handle the construction of both the center and the stadium myself, but I need one thing from you."
The Elders raised their brows in unison, waiting.
"I need the land to build on," Daniel said plainly. "Normally, I know there'd be a fee for such a request, but considering the benefits this will bring to Nahir, I hope we can come to an arrangement for the land to be provided free of charge."
There was a moment of silence as the Elders exchanged thoughtful looks. The weight of the proposal hung in the air.
---
While the Elders deliberated, Daniel leaned back in his chair, his gaze drifting to Ben. "You'll be running a unique operation," he said softly. "I trust you're up for the challenge?"
Ben gave a small smirk. "If you can provide the goods and the machines, I'll make it work. This is already shaping up to be the most interesting venture I've ever been a part of."
Before Daniel could respond, one of the Elders cleared his throat, drawing their attention. "We've discussed your proposal, Daniel," he began, his tone measured. "And while it is unconventional, we believe it has merit. Providing a safe space for battles and resources for Pokémon trainers will undoubtedly benefit the town. We will grant you the land you need, free of charge, under one condition."
Daniel nodded. "Name it."
"That the Pokémon Center and stadium remain accessible to all. While you may charge for items or services, we want to ensure that no one is excluded from using these facilities due to their status or wealth."
Daniel smiled, relief washing over him. "That's more than fair. I give you my word—the center and stadium will be open to everyone."
