Chapter 37: ch-37

**Palace Gate Stadium Audience Seats**

"Under normal circumstances, Pikachu is not particularly powerful, but Ash's Pikachu is an anomaly—it has won many battles."

The audience discussed Pikachu's unique record.

"Yes, it far surpasses its evolution stage, but why hasn't it evolved into Raichu yet?"

"Pikachu requires a Thunder Stone to evolve into Raichu."

"But that's strange. Thunder Stones aren't particularly rare. Ash has been traveling for so long; it's impossible that he doesn't have one to evolve Pikachu into Raichu."

"Yes, why is that!?"

As the audience pondered this, the answer appeared on the screen.

**The Scene Continues**

[After a long journey, Ash and his party finally arrived in Vermilion City.]

[After a short rest at the Pokémon Center, Ash and Pikachu decided to challenge the gym.]

[However, under the powerful attack of the gym leader Lt. Surge's Raichu, Pikachu was severely injured and had no chance to fight back.]

[After returning to the Pokémon Center, Nurse Joy provided Ash with a Thunder Stone. If used, Pikachu could evolve into Raichu, increasing its chances of defeating Raichu. However, once evolved, Pikachu could never return to its previous form.]

[Ash was in a dilemma but eventually placed the Thunder Stone in front of Pikachu, letting it choose.]

[Pikachu resolutely knocked the Thunder Stone away, declaring that it would never evolve and instead defeat Raichu with its own strength.]

[Pikachu's determination even moved Team Rocket, who had always been against Ash. This time, they cheered Pikachu on.]

---

**Team Rocket Headquarters**

"What are these three idiots... *doing*?"

Ariana was speechless.

"Are they really monitoring Ash? Or are they just playing cheerleader!?"

Charizard Valley, Pikachu's defeat, and now this—come on.

Why hasn't Boss Giovanni fired those three idiots yet!?

---

**Palace Gate Stadium**

On the screen:

[Ash and Pikachu returned to Vermilion Gym to challenge Lt. Surge once more. Faced with Raichu's fierce attacks, Pikachu initially struggled.]

[However, it cleverly exploited Raichu's weakness: due to evolving prematurely, Raichu never learned Agility. Seizing this advantage, Pikachu won with its superior speed.]

[When Raichu launched a Thunderbolt, Pikachu ingeniously used its tail as a conductor, channeling the current into the ground without injury.]

[Exhausted, Raichu was unable to continue. Pikachu capitalized on the opportunity, attacking with full force and defeating Raichu. Ash successfully earned the Thunder Badge.]

[Later, during another journey, Ash and his friends were enjoying lunch in the forest.]

[A young trainer named Azusa mistook Ash's Pikachu for a wild Pokémon and attempted to capture it, using her Raichu as her partner.]

[Azusa's goal was to breed the strongest line of Pichu, Pikachu, and Raichu.]

[Ash and Pikachu understood the misunderstanding but were defeated by Raichu's powerful Hyper Beam.]

[Pikachu, critically injured, was treated at the Pokémon Center and eventually recovered. As Ash prepared to use a Thunder Stone to evolve Pikachu, Pikachu stopped him.]

[Pikachu expressed its desire to defeat Raichu without evolving.]

[In the rematch, Pikachu utilized its agility and flexible movements to dodge Raichu's Hyper Beam.]

[It then countered with Iron Tail, striking Raichu multiple times before securing victory.]

**Palace Gate Stadium Champion Guest Seats**

"So, this is why Pikachu doesn't want to evolve? I've never seen such a determined Pikachu," Chibana said in surprise.

"It has always been Pikachu's wish to defeat stronger opponents as Pikachu," Diantha added.

"Such determination—I like it! Hahaha!" Alder laughed, impressed by Pikachu's courage.

Despite Pikachu's victories, many spectators were curious: could Pikachu's upper limit truly rival that of Raichu? Against unprecedentedly strong opponents, could it still prevail?

---

**The Screen Continues**

[Pikachu's battle highlights were shown.]

[From defeating Blaine's Rhydon to the Indigo League's Arcanine, Pikachu had helped Ash secure countless victories.]

[And now, an unprecedented challenge loomed ahead.]

The camera panned to—

[A tall pyramid appeared on the screen.]

[Inside the pyramid stood a standard stadium. On either side of the battlefield were Ash and a middle-aged man dressed in green mountaineering gear.]

---

"Isn't that Mr. Brandon?"

Steven Stone immediately recognized the man.

"As the leader of the Battle Pyramid, Mr. Brandon is the final challenge in the Battle Frontier. If Ash defeats him, he will dominate the entire development area," Professor Oak explained.

"Brandon is no ordinary opponent," Steven added. "He's a ruins fanatic and one of the strongest trainers I know."

"The most crucial detail is... Mr. Brandon has captured a legendary Pokémon at the Rock Peak Ruins."

Captured... a *legendary Pokémon*!?

The audience gasped in shock.

In Veilstone City, Shinji and Reiji wore solemn expressions.

The stage was set for an epic showdown.
