Chapter 62: ch-62
Palace Gate Stadium, Champion Guest Seat—
"Did Tapu Mingming train Ash for this match?" Diantha wondered aloud. She could understand the reasoning behind the question; after all, legendary Pokémon are often unpredictable.
"But this is far too difficult," she added.
"Professor Kukui is already extremely powerful, one of the best in the region's Elite Four," said Uncle Alder, his expression serious. "And if Tapu Mingming, the guardian Pokémon of the Alola Islands, joins the battle... how can Ash hope to win?"
Alder's assessment was grim.
Professor Kukui was already formidable on his own, and Ash, despite his talent, lacked the strength to challenge him. If Tapu Mingming actively joined the battle, even Alder himself might not stand a chance.
The current Ash? He wasn't a rival either.
"I can only assume that Tapu Mingming must have its own intentions," Diantha said thoughtfully. "But for Ash, this is still far too challenging."
"No... even in the Eighth Master period, there's no guarantee he could pass this kind of test completely," Alder added. "Besides, he doesn't have Charizard, Greninja, or Sceptile in his team. The only old companion he has is Pikachu!"
"Even if Pikachu is strong, it can't carry the entire team on its own!" Wallace, ever the careful analyst, laid out the facts.
Sure, Pikachu was exceptional—it had defeated the legendary Regice before—but even Pikachu had its limits. It might be able to contend with Tapu Mingming for a while, but what about the rest of Ash's team?
Wallace sighed and continued, "From the information available, Ash has Melmetal and Naganadel. Those are strong, fully-evolved Pokémon. But the others...?"
Torracat, for instance, was only at its second stage of evolution. It wasn't yet an Incineroar, and without evolving, it couldn't rival Kukui's powerhouse Incineroar.
Then there was Rowlet... still in its first stage of evolution.
"Why now?" Wallace groaned. "After all this time, hasn't it evolved into Decidueye yet? This Rowlet... is it just here to fill a spot in the roster?"
---
The champion trainers and audience alike were puzzled by Ash's team selection. The stakes couldn't be higher—this was the championship match to decide the Alola region's Champion Trainer. Yet, instead of assembling his strongest team, Ash had chosen the Pokémon he caught during his Alola journey.
Was this confidence or recklessness?
For most, the answer was clear: Ash was being overly bold.
From the perspective of Team Rocket, Team Galactic, and the spectators, it seemed inevitable—Ash would miss the honor of becoming the regional champion. Without Tapu Mingming, Ash's chances of winning were slim but not impossible. After all, he had proven his mettle against legendary opponents in the past: defeating Articuno, Regice, and even Darkrai.
But with Tapu Mingming actively involved in the match, the outcome seemed preordained.

Alola Region, Alliance Stadium—
The match began, and the stadium was packed with cheering fans. Ash and Professor Kukui released their first Pokémon.
Ash's choice? Torracat, the Fire Cat Pokémon.
Torracat was a sleek, orange-red feline. Its mane was an excellent sensory organ, capable of detecting movements in the dark. The bell-like organ around its neck, known as a "flame sac," produced both fire and a distinct chiming sound. As Torracat's emotions intensified, the flames it generated burned hotter, enhancing its battle prowess.
Professor Kukui, on the other hand, led with Incineroar, Torracat's fully-evolved form and his ace Pokémon.
Incineroar's imposing, muscular build resembled that of a bipedal tiger. Flames erupted from its navel, forming a "championship belt" that reached temperatures exceeding 2000 degrees Celsius. Incineroar thrived on unregulated, rough combat and grew even more enthusiastic when facing powerful opponents.

Palace Gate Stadium, Audience Seat—
"Wait, what? An unevolved Torracat against an evolved Incineroar?" Diantha's interest was piqued.
"Professor Kukui's Incineroar can even match my Dragonite," the Dodo commented. "Ash's Torracat hasn't evolved yet. How is it going to win this?"
From his past experiences battling Kukui, Dodo was confident in his analysis.
"Ash is attacking from the start?" Chibana frowned. "If so, Torracat will be the first Pokémon eliminated."
The evolutionary gap alone was enough to create significant disparity. Even if Torracat gave its all, it was unlikely to significantly damage Incineroar.
---
The Backstory of Torracat and Incineroar—
This wasn't their first meeting. Torracat's rivalry with Incineroar dated back to the time when it was still a Litten. Inspired by Incineroar's victories at the Battle Royal Dome, Litten had trained rigorously to improve itself.
Over time, Litten evolved into Torracat, mastering the Flame Charge technique to increase its speed. However, despite these improvements, it had consistently fallen short in battles against Incineroar.
The Alola Championship was the perfect opportunity for Torracat to finally prove itself.
This battle... was personal.
---
As the two Pokémon squared off, the flames around Incineroar's waist flared to life, and Torracat's flame sac emitted a fierce glow.
This was more than a battle for a championship—it was a clash of wills. Torracat had come too far to back down now.
The Alola Region Championship Stage...
Torracat would never admit defeat.
