Chapter 204: The Mysterious Stone Even Steven Can't Identify
Diancie had just received the group photo from Angie and immediately called him.
"Angie, did you meet Diantha?" Diancie asked in a shocked tone.
"Yeah, didn't I send you the photo?" Angie replied.
"Then did you get her autograph for me?" Diancie asked eagerly.
Angie answered, "I sent you the photo, isn't that enough?"
Diancie angrily said, "That's a photo of you with Diantha, not me with her! I want an autograph!"
Angie awkwardly scratched his nose.
"Hahaha~ I didn't think of it at the time. Next time I meet her, I promise to get you an autograph."
"Who knows if you'll get another chance to meet her," Diancie said disappointedly.
"I will, I definitely will!" Angie promised immediately.
"Alright, I'll forgive you this time," Diancie said.
After hanging up, Angie played with his Pokémon for a while before heading to bed with them.
The next morning, they were awakened by the chirping of a Fletchling outside the window.
Angie sat up in bed, rubbed his sleepy eyes, and asked his three Pokémon with a smile.
"Good morning, how did you sleep last night?"
"Munchlax~"
Very well!
Munchlax was the first to respond.
"Magearna~ Magearna~"
Me too.
Magearna smiled sweetly.
The Tyrunt who is just woke up looked around sleepily before glancing down at the Thick Club still in its arms.
After staring at it for a while, it started gnawing on it again.
"Let's wash up and head out for breakfast," Angie said while getting dressed.
"Munchlax~"
Munchlax quickly took off its pajamas and dashed into the bathroom.
After finishing their morning routine, Angie and his three Pokémon arrived at the Pokémon Center cafeteria.
"Magearna~ Magearna~"
Eating breakfast outside feels a little strange.
"Munchlax~"
Munchlax nodded.
Tyrunt looked at Munchlax and Diancie in confusion. Why did it feel strange? It was delicious!
After breakfast, Angie noticed a group of people leaving the Pokémon Center to dig for fossils and asked Munchlax and Magearna.
"Should we try digging a fossil too?"
Magearna tilted its head.
"Magearna~ Magearna~"
Can we really find anything? It looks pretty difficult.
Angie laughed, "We're just going for the experience, not because we have to find something. Besides, we have nothing else to do."
"Munchlax~ Munchlax~"
Hearing this, Munchlax happily agreed.
"Magearna~ Magearna~"
Alright, let's give it a try.
Magearna nodded in agreement.
"There's a shop over there selling excavation outfits and tools, let's go buy a set!" Angie pointed to a store across from the Pokémon Center.
Since many trainers came to Ambrette Town to dig for fossils and stayed at the Pokémon Center, someone had opened a shop specializing in excavation gear and tools.
Angie's suggestion was met with approval from Magearna and Munchlax.
As for Tyrunt, it wasn't interested in digging fossil at all and continued gnawing on its Thick Club with focus.
By the time they came out of the store, they were fully geared up.
They were all wearing matching gray excavation outfits with hats that had built-in headlamps, and they carried excavation tools on their shoulders.
Angie carried a pickaxe, Magearna held a shovel, and Munchlax carried a mining pick.
"Munchlax~ Munchlax~"
Munchlax, feeling joyful, walked at the front with its short legs moving in a lively rhythm, singing as they joined the excavation team heading toward the Fossil Cave.
The Fossil Cave is a place for excavating fossils. It was originally a mountain, but as more and more people came to dig for fossils, it gradually turned into a vast network of caves.
Following the main group, Angie and his team soon arrived at the Fossil Cave just outside the town.
Watching others enter one after another, Angie said to his three Pokémon, "Let's go in too."
"Munchlax~"
"Magearna~"
"Tyrunt~"
The three Pokémon closely followed Angie.
The lighting inside the Fossil Cave was particularly dim. As soon as they entered, they had to turn on their headlamps to see clearly.
"Tyrunt~"
As expected of a baby Pokémon, the Tyrunt was afraid of the dark and immediately clung to Angie upon entering the cave.
Angie patted its large head and said, "There, there, don't be scared. We're all here with you."
However, Angie's reassurance didn't help much. The Tyrunt still tightly hugged his waist.
Oh well, Angie didn't say anything more and let it hold on to him.
After only a few steps, Munchlax was already swinging its pickaxe and digging away.
Seeing Munchlax digging so enthusiastically, Angie asked, "Munchlax, did you find any clues to fossils?"
"Munchlax~"
I haven't found it.
Munchlax looked puzzled.
"Then why are you digging so hard?" Angie couldn't help but laugh.
"Munchlax~ Munchlax~"
Well, If I keep digging, I'll find something eventually.
Munchlax scratched the back of its head and grinned.
Angie said, "That makes sense, but this area has probably been dug countless times. It's unlikely we'll find anything here. Let's go deeper."
"Munchlax~"
Munchlax immediately shouldered its pickaxe and marched deeper into the cave.
Due to countless trainers digging over the years, the Fossil Cave had become an intricate labyrinth. Angie had no idea which way to go, so he let Munchlax lead the way.
Munchlax walked in fits and starts, stopping whenever it thought there might be fossils, taking a few swings with the pickaxe before moving on.
If it found an oddly shaped rock, it would eagerly bring it over to show Angie.
In reality, the rocks that caught its attention were only peculiar in shape, with no real significance.
Angie felt that Munchlax wasn't here to dig fossils but just to have fun.
Still, Angie didn't stop it and let it enjoy itself.
Many Pokémon inhabited the Fossil Cave, such as Sandshrew, Zubat, and Sableye. It was even said that Noibat lived here, though Angie hadn't encountered one yet.
After walking for who knows how long, they had ventured deep into the Fossil Cave, where they encountered fewer and fewer other diggers.
Angie hadn't done much digging at all; it was mainly Munchlax, with Tyrunt occasionally scraping the ground with its claws.
Having spent so much time in the cave, Tyrunt gradually adapted to the environment and was no longer as scared.
At that moment, Munchlax seemed to have found something new and dragged Tyrunt to a corner, whispering excitedly.
Just then, Angie's phone suddenly rang. He took it out and saw that it was a video call from Diancie.
"Angie, where are you?" Seeing the dark surroundings and their strange attire, Diancie asked curiously.
"We're in the cave digging for fossils!" Angie replied.
"That makes sense." Diancie looked as if she suddenly understood.
"What's up?" Angie asked.
Diancie said, "I accepted a mission for you. You'll understand when you see it."
Before Angie could respond, he heard a system notification.
"That's all." With that, Diancie ended the video call.
Angie pouted. "She hung up just like that? Doesn't she want to chat with me a little longer?"
Muttering to himself, he opened the system to check the new mission. Sure enough, there was a new task in the mission log.
...
[ (Fossil Excavation Task) Please follow the instructions to excavate a mysterious fossil in the Fossil Cave - Pending Completion. ]
...
A mysterious fossil? Angie pondered. What kind of fossil is considered mysterious?
Omanyte, Kabuto, Anorith, Lileep, Cranidos, Shieldon, Tirtouga, Archen, Amaura, Tyrunt, or perhaps a fossilized bird, dragon, fish, or sea creature?
After turning off the system, Angie noticed that his Eye of Observation had gained a new indicator.
This meant he needed to follow it.
After determining the direction indicated, Angie chose a tunnel and called out to Munchlax, Magearna, and Tyrunt.
"Stop playing around, everyone. This way."
"Munchlax~"
Munchlax hurried over to Angie's side while dragging its pickaxe.
"Tyrunt~"
Tyrunt followed closely behind.
"Magearna~ Magearna~"
Wait for me!
Magearna trailed at the back.
After navigating through the twists and turns guided by the indicator, they found themselves completely separated from the excavation team, reaching the deepest part of the cave.
Finally, the indicator stopped spinning, and the arrow pointed downward.
"So, I need to dig down here?" Angie tapped the hard ground with his pickaxe.
"Munchlax~"
Without hesitation, Munchlax raised its pickaxe and started digging.
"You're really full of energy," Angie couldn't help but laugh.
"Munchlax~"
Munchlax grinned and fist-bumped Angie.
Angie resigned himself and said, "Alright, let's dig!"
With that, he lifted his pickaxe and started digging alongside Munchlax.
"Magearna~"
Seeing them work, Magearna quickly joined in.
"Tyrunt~"
Not wanting to be left out, Tyrunt used its strong claws to dig into the ground.
They dug for who knows how long, and while they had carved out a downward tunnel, there was still no sign of the mysterious fossil mentioned in the mission.
"How long are we going to dig?" Angie straightened up and massaged his sore back.
"Munchlax~ Munchlax~"
Seeing this, Munchlax quickly offered to continue digging alone so that his master could rest.
"Thanks for caring, my dear apprentice, but I can't let you do all the work alone," Angie said, pinching Munchlax's chubby cheeks.
"Munchlax~"
Munchlax held its cheeks where Angie had pinched and grinned foolishly.
Angie thought for a moment and said, "Let's take a break and have something to eat before continuing."
All three Pokémon raised their hands in agreement.
Angie found a flat spot, laid out a clean cloth, and Magearna took out the snacks it had prepared from the backpack, while Angie retrieved the juice drinks made by Passimian.
It was Tyrunt's first time having such delicious food. As it happily accepted Munchlax's offerings, it rolled around on the ground in delight.
After filling up, they resumed digging.
As they dug, Angie suddenly felt his pickaxe strike something hard.
Did they finally find it? He felt a surge of excitement.
Clearing away the surrounding debris, he was disappointed to see that their path was blocked by a massive, solid boulder—not the mysterious fossil they were looking for.
He tapped the boulder with his pickaxe and realized it was immovable.
"Munchlax~ Munchlax~"
Master, leave it to me!
Munchlax stepped forward with a raised fist.
"Alright, go ahead!" Angie stepped aside.
"Munchlax~"
Munchlax's fist radiated an icy chill before it smashed into the boulder.
Crack—
Cracks spread across the boulder, but it didn't shatter.
"Magearna~ Magearna~"
Let me try too!
Magearna eagerly stepped forward.
"Munchlax~"
Munchlax stepped aside for Magearna.
Magearna extended its hand, gathering a silvery glow. The next second, a silver beam shot out and struck the boulder, enlarging the cracks.
Magearna had used the Steel-type move, Flash Cannon.
"Tyrunt~ Tyrunt~"
Seeing Munchlax and Magearna take action, Tyrunt was eager to try as well.
Angie sighed. "Alright, you too."
He shook his head, thinking, What can this little guy do?
To his surprise, Tyrunt managed to break through the boulder. It swung its claws and smashed into the rock, creating a hole in it.
Angie was astonished. "Tyrunt, you learned Dig? When did that happen?"
"Tyrunt~ Tyrunt~"
Tyrunt responded proudly.
Tyrunt excitedly jumped to Angie's side, seeking praise.
It had been following Munchlax around, and while digging alongside it, it naturally learned the move Dig.
Angie patted Tyrunt's head and said, "Well done! I'll make you some beef bones when we get back!"
"Tyrunt~ Tyrunt~"
Upon hearing this, Tyrunt excitedly used Dig again. Soon, a spacious tunnel appeared in front of them.
However, Tyrunt was still at a low level and had little stamina. Before long, it collapsed to the ground, exhausted.
Angie couldn't help but laugh. "I didn't ask you to work so hard!"
"Tyrunt~"
Tyrunt hung its head weakly.
"Alright, just follow behind and get some rest." Angie patted it reassuringly.
With the tunnel Tyrunt dug, digging became much easier for Angie and the others.
Munchlax abandoned its pickaxe entirely, opting to punch through the rocks with Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, and Ice Punch in alternating succession. Rocks flew in all directions within the cave.
No one knew how long they had been digging when Munchlax suddenly let out an excited cry.
"Munchlax~ Munchlax~"
Master, master, come and take a look!
"What's wrong?" Angie hurried over.
"Munchlax~ Munchlax~"
Munchlax excitedly pointed to the rock ahead.
Angie then noticed that there were unusual patterns on the stone Munchlax was pointing at.
"This is... a plant fossil?" Angie was surprised. "It looks like some kind of lotus fossil."
On the stone, Angie could see patterns of lotus flowers and round lotus leaves.
"Don't damage these fossils," Angie instructed Munchlax.
Even though they weren't Pokémon fossils, plant fossils were also valuable. They provided important insights into the ancient Pokémon world's ecosystem.
"Munchlax~"
Munchlax nodded.
Angie carefully removed the plant fossils with the help of Munchlax and Magearna.
As for Tyrunt, it was better off playing on the side; its clumsy nature would only damage the fossils.
There were quite a few plant fossils, and it took Angie, Munchlax, and Magearna considerable effort to excavate them intact.
Eventually, at the center of the plant fossils, they discovered the mysterious fossil mentioned by the system.
This fossil was enormous, almost half the size of Angie. It was round and smooth, making it difficult to determine what creature it belonged to.
It had evidently fossilized along with the lotus plants—perhaps it had been playing in the lotus pond at the time.
Regardless, the priority was to excavate it first.
Angie and his Pokémon carefully unearthed the fossil and stored it in the system's backpack.
As soon as the fossil was secured, Angie heard the system notification confirming task completion.
Looks like they found the right one!
Angie clapped his hands. "Alright, it's getting late. Let's head back."
The cave was dimly lit, making it hard to track time. In reality, they had been digging for an entire day.
"Munchlax~"
"Magearna~"
"Tyrunt~"
The three Pokémon nodded their heads simultaneously. They were exhausted but had enjoyed themselves immensely.
Digging a fossil was just for fun; none of them had expected to find anything significant.
If it were that easy to dig up fossils, fossil Pokémon would be everywhere by now.
As Angie and his team exited the Fossil Cave, the sun was already setting, and other diggers were also gradually coming out.
Most of them, like Angie, had found nothing.
Back at the Pokémon Center, Angie let Munchlax and Magearna take turns using the bathroom first.
Meanwhile, he used bath sand and a brush to clean Tyrunt.
Finally, he went in to take a hot shower himself.
The warm water washed away the exhaustion from the long day, leaving him feeling much more refreshed.
Afterward, he took his Pokémon to dinner.
(Darkrai: Another day of being ignored?)
After dinner, Angie noticed many Trainers sparring in the Pokémon Center's backyard, so he went to watch with his Pokémon.
Around 10:00 PM, he returned to his room with his team.
Of course, he didn't forget his promise to Tyrunt.
Upon receiving a fresh beef bone, Tyrunt immediately started gnawing on it.
While the three Pokémon played, Angie decided to give Steven a video call.
His phone projected an image into the air, and Steven's face appeared shortly after.
"Angie, what made you call me?"
Angie pointed at the mysterious fossil he had taken out earlier and asked, "I have a fossil-related question for you. Can you tell what kind of creature this belonged to?"
Steven, an expert in fossils, had a family company, Devon Corporation, that had developed fossil revival technology.
Steven examined the fossil carefully and said after a while, "Bring your phone closer."
Angie obliged, moving the phone closer to the mysterious fossil.
"Hmm~" Steven furrowed his brows after observing it for a long time. "I can't recognize it at all. It doesn't match any known fossil Pokémon."
"Wow, even you don't know?" Angie was astonished.
Steven chuckled helplessly. "I'm not omniscient."
After a moment, he added, "Let me check some records and get back to you."
Angie nodded. "Alright, I'll wait for your update."
