Chapter 436: Chapter 24: Falkner’s Expectations
Ash couldn't afford to focus on his entrepreneurial idea for long. The practicalities of launching a clothing line—securing designs, finding manufacturers, and managing distribution—would have to wait.
For now, he put the thought aside, though he made a mental note to revisit it when the time was right.
In the meantime, Ash continued to chat with the enthusiastic Trainer seated beside him, gleaning more insight into the Ash Support Club.
It was clear that this growing fanbase had significant potential—not just as admirers but possibly as future customers.
---
As time passed, the Trainer seated beside Ash was called to the battle platform. Before leaving, he turned to Ash with an encouraging smile.
"Don't let us down, brother! Keep the Ash Support Club's reputation alive!"
Ash nodded with a grin. "You've got this too. Let's both give it our best!"
Moments later, an announcement echoed through the waiting hall.
"Mr. Ash, please proceed to the battle platform. Mr. Ash, please proceed to the battle platform."
The room fell silent for a moment before erupting in surprised whispers. Many Trainers stood up, their expressions ranging from shock to excitement.
"It's really Ash Ketchum!" someone murmured.
The Trainer who had been chatting with Ash stared at him in stunned silence, realization dawning far too late.
"What… what did I do?" he muttered, smacking his forehead in disbelief. He had spent all that time talking to his idol without even recognizing him! "Mr. Ash is going to think I'm a fake fan now…"
As regret weighed heavily on him, other Trainers began to gather around, bombarding him with questions about his conversation with Ash.
Meanwhile, aware of the commotion he'd left behind, Ash stepped into the elevator under the staff's guidance. His heart raced with anticipation as he ascended to the gym's top platform.
---
On the battlefield above, Falkner stood with his arms crossed, reviewing Ash's profile on a tablet. His expression betrayed a mix of excitement and determination.
"Challenging Ash Ketchum…" he murmured to himself. "This is an opportunity I've been waiting for."
Though Ash was technically a Great Ball-level Trainer, his feats—defeating members of the Elite Four and even standing against legendary Pokémon—placed him in a league of his own. Falkner knew this would be no ordinary gym battle.
"Only by facing strong opponents can I identify my weaknesses and grow stronger," Falkner said quietly, his gaze fixed on the elevator doors.
In the audience, Misty and Brock listened as the spectators buzzed with excitement.
"I can't believe we get to watch Ash's gym challenge up close!" one person exclaimed.
"His battles are always incredible," another added.
Misty and Brock exchanged proud smiles. They had traveled far with Ash and knew better than anyone how much he had grown.
---
The elevator doors opened, and Ash stepped onto the platform to a chorus of cheers. The crowd's roar echoed through the city, drawing the attention of passersby on the streets below.
Ash paused to acknowledge the audience, bowing slightly before walking to the challenger's position. Across from him, Falkner stood with a faint smile.
"It's an honor to meet you, Mr. Ash," Falkner said, his tone polite yet brimming with confidence.
"The honor's mine, Mr. Falkner," Ash replied, returning the smile.
"I've heard much about your accomplishments," Falkner continued. "I hope you won't disappoint me in this battle."
His words carried a hint of challenge, meant to push Ash to bring his best to the field.
Ash recognized Falkner's intent but remained composed. A gym battle was not just about winning—it was an invaluable training opportunity for his Pokémon.
The referee stepped forward to explain the rules. "This is a three-on-three battle between Gym Leader Falkner and Challenger Ash Ketchum. The Gym Leader cannot switch Pokémon during the match. Victory is decided when one side's Pokémon are all unable to battle."
With the rules clarified, Falkner took a deep breath, steadying himself. "Let's begin! Noctowl, I choose you!"
Falkner tossed a Poké Ball into the air, releasing his Noctowl. The owl Pokémon flapped its powerful wings, its sharp eyes scanning the battlefield with keen focus.

Noctowl was one of Falkner's most trusted Pokémon. Though the match was officially ranked at the Great Ball level, Falkner's dedication to using his full strength with Noctowl reflected his respect for Ash's reputation.
"Show me what you've got!" Falkner said, his voice low but filled with resolve.
Ash, however, surprised him by choosing a different Pokémon. "Lapras, I choose you!"
In a burst of white light, Lapras appeared on the battlefield. The Water/Ice-type Pokémon raised its head proudly, its eyes gleaming with determination. This was its first official gym battle, and it was ready to prove its strength.
Lapras
Type: Water/Ice
Category: Transport Pokémon
Strength: Silver level

Although Lapras was slightly less experienced than Noctowl, its type advantage gave it a strong edge. With its recent training, Lapras was prepared to rise to the challenge.
"Let's see how far you've come," Ash murmured, watching Lapras intently.
The crowd leaned forward in anticipation as the referee raised his flag.
"Let the battle begin!"
