Chapter 109: CHAPTER 110
c110: Serena's Invitation!!
"Thank you, Professor." Ash expressed his gratitude sincerely.
With Professor Oak's status and authority within the Pokémon Alliance, the issue of acquiring a Poké Ball Teleporter was now practically resolved. Ash could rest assured that the device he needed for his online store service would be provided without complication.
After successfully meeting with Professor Oak to address the Poké Ball transmission problem, Ash headed to the cafeteria with a sense of relief, ready to eat lunch with his friends. But things were far less relaxed for Professor Oak himself.
As soon as he submitted the application to the Alliance headquarters for a portable Poké Ball transfer unit on Ash's behalf, Oak left the campgrounds without delay. Releasing his Dragonite, he mounted the dragon-type and flew directly to the People's Hospital in Viking City.
Earlier that morning, during the fishing event, a number of students at the Pokémon Summer Camp had sustained injuries due to the sudden appearance of a rampaging wild Gyarados. One student, Goh, had been seriously hurt and was transported to Tokiwa City Hospital.
News of the incident had already begun to spread through public channels. And with this year's summer camp being an important Kanto × Kalos cultural exchange event, public scrutiny was especially intense.
For parents entrusting their children to the camp, safety was the most basic expectation. Now, with a serious accident occurring under Oak's supervision, both the Kanto Alliance and the camp organizers faced growing pressure from media outlets and public criticism commonly referred to as "fishing boat pressure" in Alliance political slang.
However, back at the secluded campgrounds, most of the students, including Ash, remained unaware of the growing storm outside. And even if they did know, it's doubtful they would have paid much attention.
For Ash, his main concern remained doing well in the camp's daily activities and striving to be recognized as a Top Summer Camper at the end of the program—a title that came with a prestigious certificate, public recognition by the Alliance, and generous rewards, such as access to rare Pokémon eggs or specialized TM discs.
Yet Ash wasn't overly anxious about it. If anything, he was enjoying himself. Between the exciting challenges, his progress in training, and spending time with both his old friends and new ones including Serena from Kalos, who now went by Ser Lena this was one of the happiest summers of his life.
Still, Ash couldn't deny a growing feeling of sadness deep inside. Once camp was over, Serena would return to Kalos. He didn't want this brief time with her to end so quickly. If he could, he'd prolong it just a bit longer.
After finishing lunch, Ash turned to look at Gary and the others gathered around the outdoor tables.
"Since today's fishing contest ended ahead of schedule, the afternoon is ours to spend freely. What do you all plan to do, Gary?" he asked casually.
Gary stood, brushing off his shorts.
"There's really nothing new going on in camp today. I'm planning to use the afternoon to help my Fletchling with some focused training," he replied. "Whether it's preparing for the upcoming assessments or working toward earning our Starter Pokémon at the end of the camp, it's important to build practical training experience now. Helping our camp partner Pokémon grow stronger is just part of that journey."
Xiaolan: "I'm also planning to help my partner, Dedenne, with training. By the end of the summer camp, if I can rank high enough, I want to apply for Dedenne to become my official Starter Pokémon, just like Ash did with Froakie."
[Electric Mouse - Dedenne]
Level: LV.5
Type: Electric / Fairy
Nature: Timid
Abilities: Cheek Pouch (Primary), Plus (Hidden Ability)
Potential Grade: B-Rank (Elite Tier)
Copyable Skills: Nuzzle, Tail Whip, Tackle
Dedenne's appearance is undeniably adorable, with its round cheeks and long whiskers. Xiaolan had originally hoped to receive a Pikachu as her Starter, inspired by Ash's famous partner, but once she encountered Dedenne, her preference quickly changed.
Ash fully supported Xiaolan's desire to apply for Dedenne as her official Starter Pokémon at the end of camp. The key factor behind his support was Dedenne's qualification rating.
In accordance with the Pokémon Alliance's guidelines, most Rookie Trainers receive Starter Pokémon bred by certified breeders, typically ranked as B-grade elite. Xiaolan's Dedenne matches this benchmark, much like Xunzi's Bellsprout, who was encountered during yesterday's team challenge. That Bellsprout also had a B-grade potential rating.
So in terms of potential, Xiaolan wouldn't be missing out at all. Even if other students like Gary, Tierno, or Trevor happen to receive Pokémon of similar strength and pedigree, Ash would still recommend taking the opportunity when a qualified partner like Dedenne appears.
Another major point in Dedenne's favor is its Hidden Ability, Plus, which boosts its potential when paired with a Pokémon having Minus—a strong synergy possibility in Double Battles. On top of that, Dedenne belongs to the Fairy type, which is a rare and valuable type in the Trainer community.
Though Ash himself never places Pokémon based on elemental hierarchy believing there's no intrinsic superiority between, say, Dragon and Bug types he's aware that the wider Trainer community values types like Dragon and Fairy highly due to their rarity and versatility.
So when compared to the traditional Starters—Fire, Water, and Grass types receiving a Fairy-type Earl Pokémon like Dedenne is a strategic and advantageous move.

Trevor:
After the rest of the group finished discussing their afternoon plans, Serena now going by Ser Lena during the exchange program turned toward Ash, her cheeks slightly flushed, and asked in a hesitant but sincere voice:
"Ash... what are your plans for the afternoon? Could I ask you to coach me in some Pokémon training?"
Ash blinked in mild surprise. Ser Lena was normally quite shy, and for her to make such a direct request took him off guard but in a good way.
"Sure, no problem!" Ash smiled. He was glad to see her becoming more confident after the events of the Camp Opening Challenge.
"Looks like yesterday's challenge really boosted her self-confidence. She's becoming more outgoing." Ash thought to himself, pleased.
Unaware of Ash's inner thoughts, Ser Lena beamed with delight at his answer. "Great! Thank you so much, Ash!!"
"You're welcome," Ash replied, waving off the thanks with a relaxed grin. "Since everyone's made plans, let's all get started!"
"Alright!"
"Okay~!"
Motivated by the promise of becoming one of the Top Three Campers and earning the coveted Summer Camp Excellent Student Honor, everyone was eager to begin their own specialized training. The honor came with substantial prizes—ranging from advanced TMs to rare Pokémon and many of the current front-runners, including Ash and his circle, were well-positioned to compete.
As Gary, Xiaolan, Tierno, Trevor, and the others dispersed into different training areas, only Ash and Ser Lena remained.
Ash turned to Serena and said, "Let's head out too, Ser Lena."
"O-okay!" she nodded, cheeks still rosy.
Ash didn't think anything was strange about it though Serena had grown in confidence thanks to their recent battle, changing a shy personality overnight was never easy.
The two of them left the main camp together. This time, Ash deliberately avoided the path they had used yesterday and instead led Serena into a new section of the forest.
This part of the woods was cool and shaded. The high canopy filtered sunlight gently, and the air was rich with moisture and oxygen, refreshing both body and spirit. With each breath of the forest's crisp scent, the faint drowsiness Ash had felt after lunch was replaced by renewed energy.
