Frogadier VS Geodude.

The referee announced that both sides were ready, waved the flag, and declared, "The battle begins!"

As the Gym Leader, Roxanne gracefully gave up the first move, allowing Chris to take the initiative.

Chris didn't hesitate. "Frogadier, Quick Attack!"

The moment he spoke, Frogadier vanished in a blur, rushing toward Geodude like lightning. In one swift motion, Frogadier raised its hand, brandishing the Cut it had just learned!

A radiating dazzling light appeared in its hand, slashing diagonally from bottom right to top left, as though aiming to slice Geodude in two!

"Harden!" Roxanne quickly commanded, surprised by Frogadier's speed.

"Geo!" Geodude immediately crossed its arms in front of its body, and a silver sheen flashed over its rocky form, increasing its defense.

Ding! A sharp sound echoed as Frogadier's hand struck Geodude, sending sparks flying, but... the attack barely left a mark.

Geodude's natural defense was already high, and with Harden, it had become even sturdier. It was no surprise that the attack didn't break through.

But Chris's true plan wasn't Cut.

"Bubble Beam!"

Without warning, Frogadier launched a stream of water-filled bubbles that struck Geodude squarely, sending it flying across the battlefield. Geodude crashed down right in front of Roxanne's feet.

[Defeated Geodude LV17, gained 340 experience.]

A one-hit KO.

Roxanne was left speechless. Chris's Frogadier was incredibly fast—both in movement and in executing moves. The Bubble Beam was so swift that Geodude didn't stand a chance, even at a distance.

However, instead of using Bubble Beam from the start, Chris had Frogadier use Quick Attack and Cut to test things out first.

Why? Roxanne wondered. He's clearly strong—so why so cautious?

And she was right to guess.

Chris had Frogadier use Quick Attack to get close because he was being careful. But it wasn't just a test; he knew that even if Geodude could react, it wouldn't be able to dodge at close range.

In a Pokémon battle, type advantage makes close-range attacks all the more effective.

"Stable fighting style," Roxanne finally commented, before releasing her second Poké Ball.

The Poké Ball opened, and a massive figure crashed down from the sky.

Boom! The ground trembled with the arrival of the Pokémon.

It was an Onix!

Chris glanced at its level—LV20. It was still within a reasonable challenge range, with only a four-level difference.

"Onix, use Rock Slide!" This time, Roxanne didn't hold back and took the offensive.

"Roooar!" Onix growled as a black hole-like vortex appeared in the sky above the battlefield. From it, fist-sized rocks began raining down, filling the battlefield with debris.

"Bubble Beam!" Chris quickly commanded.

With the area-wide Rock Slide, dodging was pointless.

Frogadier didn't have any defensive skills, so Chris decided to rely on a trade of attacks, seeing who would fall first.

Frogadier opened its mouth and unleashed a stream of water, with bubbles forming a line as they shot through the air.

Unlike Geodude, Onix was so large that dodging was impossible, which was why Chris kept Frogadier at a distance.

"Rock Tomb!" Roxanne reacted swiftly.

Three massive stones crashed down in front of Onix, blocking the Bubble Beam.

Boom!

Deep gouges appeared on the boulders, but they held firm.

Rock Tomb is typically an offensive move, but Roxanne was using it defensively, combining attack and defense seamlessly.

"Quick Attack!" Chris began planning the second phase of his offensive.

Frogadier vanished once again, darting between the falling rocks from Onix's Rock Throw, zigzagging towards its opponent despite the barrage.

"Dragon Breath!" Roxanne countered.

Onix opened its massive maw, releasing a thick, dark green flame that swept across the battlefield.

Frogadier had no choice but to stop in its tracks and leap back to avoid the searing Dragon Breath.

"Iron Tail!" Roxanne followed up immediately.

Onix twisted its massive body, and its tail gleamed with a bright silver light. The tail, like a steel blade, slashed sideways, even smashing through the Rock Tomb barrier in front of it.

"Cut!"

Mid-air, Frogadier quickly summoned a glowing light to defend itself.

But the resistance was futile. In the next instant, the sheer force of Onix's Iron Tail blasted Frogadier into the side wall of the battlefield.

"Rock Slide, Rock Tomb, Dragon Breath, and Iron Tail—this Onix has a well-rounded strategy," Chris murmured to himself.

"Can you keep fighting?" Chris called out, eyeing Frogadier, which had just fallen from the wall.

"Frogadier! (╬ ̄皿 ̄)" With a determined shout, Frogadier stood back up, ready to continue.

"Impressive perseverance, but I suggest you not push it too far," Roxanne said kindly. Onix may be massive, and even if its raw strength wasn't overwhelming, the sheer weight behind its Iron Tail was fearsome enough on its own.

Any further attempts to fight like this could mean more than just minor injuries for Frogadier.

But Chris ignored Roxanne's warning and raised his hand to issue his next command.

"Frogadier, use Water Pulse!"

"gadier!!!" Frogadier cried out, sending a powerful pulse of water swirling through the air with great force.

"Rock Tomb!" Roxanne called again, sticking to her strategy.

Three enormous rocks fell from the sky, landing in front of Onix to intercept the Water Pulse.

But this time, something different happened.

Crash!

The Water Pulse pierced through the rocks, shattering them as it barreled toward Onix.

"So powerful?!" Roxanne exclaimed in disbelief.

It was indeed more powerful. Frogadier's Special Attack stat was naturally higher than its Physical Attack, especially once it evolved into Greninja. Chris had trained Frogadier to be strong in both areas, but its Special Attack was where it truly excelled.

Onix crumbled, and the ground shook violently beneath it.

[Defeated Onix LV20, gained 800 experience.]

As a Rock and Ground-type Pokémon, Onix took quadruple damage from water-type moves, and even the remnants of Frogadier's Water Pulse after it broke through the Rock Tomb were enough to knock it out in a single blow!

This powerful move was actually a "surprise" Chris had been saving for Roxanne's last Pokémon.
