The handheld was switched on, and the boat sailed gracefully into the bay of the Johto Region. In the distance, Olivine City's skyline became visible, its towering structures reflecting the golden sunlight.
It was estimated that it wouldn't take long before the Wave Breaker could dock at Olivine City. Chris decided to use this time to chat with the captain.
"The Wave Breaker will only stay in Olivine City for three days," the captain explained. "After that, I'll return to the Hoenn Region. Riley and Wanda mentioned they were vacationing here, so my return trip will be quicker—about twenty days to Slateport City."
Chris pondered for a moment. "Is it closer to the Kalos Region or the Johto Region?"
He was already considering the possibility of heading directly to the Kalos Region from Johto, which also had a harbor. If he remembered correctly, there was a ship called the Current.
"Not close!" The captain shook his head. "If you want to go to the Kalos Region, the best way is to take a plane. Traveling by boat would take half a year."
Chris froze, slightly embarrassed. He had planned on sailing to the Johto Region for easier access to other destinations but had not considered air travel as an option.
"If you want to take a plane," the captain continued, "Mossdeep City in the Hoenn Region has a rocket launch center and an airport. As for the Johto Region, I'm not sure about their airport locations."
"What about traveling to the Alola Region or Galar Region?" Chris asked.
"Alola can be reached by boat, but it'll take two months. I'd still recommend flying. As for the Galar Region, it's near Kalos, so a plane is your best bet," the captain replied.
Chris sighed. He hadn't expected that he'd have to rely so heavily on air travel. It seemed his plans were headed in the wrong direction from the start. He'd always assumed boats were the main method for interregional travel.
Once the ship reached the city, Chris decided not to rush back to the Hoenn Region. Instead, he would find Jasmine, a Gym Leader in Johto, and ask about the region's airport before deciding on his next steps.
"What regions can the Wave Breaker take me to?" Chris asked curiously.
The captain responded, "Head east to the Kanto Region, or south to the Orange Islands."
Chris nodded thoughtfully. Kanto didn't hold much interest for him at the moment. The Orange Islands, though intriguing, weren't a priority compared to Kalos, Alola, or Galar. He decided to keep those destinations for another time.
After two hours, the Wave Breaker finally docked at Olivine City. Chris headed straight for the Pokémon Center, healed his team, and registered the city on his map, enabling him to use Fly later.
He attempted to use Fly to Fortree City in Hoenn, and a prompt appeared.
[Would you like Flygon to use Fly to travel to the Hoenn Region – Fortree City?]
Chris smiled. "A little more than three days, not bad!" The time seemed manageable. He planned to complete a Volcano program quest in three days before flying back to the Hoenn Region.
Meanwhile, Chris decided to explore Johto. Whether or not Johto had an airport was now less of a concern; he was determined to make the most of his time there.
Leaving the Pokémon Center, he made his way to the Olivine City Gym. However, the locals informed him that Jasmine wasn't in the city and they didn't know her current location. If he wanted to challenge her, he'd have to schedule an appointment in advance.
"Isn't Jasmine returning to Johto?" Chris murmured in surprise.
It seemed he had arrived too late. It appeared Jasmine had come back briefly and then left again, or so Chris guessed.
With Jasmine unavailable, he decided to postpone the Gym challenge. Following his usual pattern, he chose to explore the entire city first.
After some time spent searching, Chris concluded that Olivine City didn't have much to offer. Even the character who was supposed to give him a Machamp skill CD didn't show up, likely because Chris already possessed it.
Glancing at his map, Chris decided to head north along Route 39, aiming to reach Kagu Town, near the Lake of Rage.
On the way, he took his time, enjoying the journey and hoping to encounter some unexpected Pokémon surprises.
Route 39 and Route 38 Pokémon
Common Pokémon in the area included Rattata, Meowth, and Magnemite. Occasionally, he might encounter Farfetch'd, Tauros, or Miltank, while Snubbull was a particularly rare find.
Chris also experimented with group battles, where Tauros and Miltank appeared in greater numbers. Sometimes, Hoothoot would join the fray. Using "Headbutt" on large trees along Route 39 yielded Pokémon like Exeggcute, Hoothoot, Pineco, Ledyba, and Spinarak.
Reviewing his findings, Chris noted that of all the Pokémon on Route 39 and Route 38, only Tauros and Snubbull interested him.
Strategy and Pokémon Uses
Miltank was another target for practical reasons. It could produce MooMoo Milk, an essential resource if Chris ever decided to open a breeding hut with a pasture. Producing his own MooMoo Milk seemed far more appealing than buying it, considering concerns about external quality or tampering.
As for Snubbull, its rarity and appeal to wealthy individuals made it a prime candidate for capture. Its pink coat and playful demeanor made it an excellent pet, while its evolution, Granbull, had a more fearsome appearance but remained gentle and timid at heart.
Granbull's strong physique and impressive attack power made it a capable guardian Pokémon, particularly for protecting its owner. This combination of rarity, practicality, and high demand among the nobility made Snubbull a lucrative find. Chris decided it would be perfect to sell to affluent families.
However, Snubbull's low encounter rate—less than 1%—made finding one a real challenge. It only appeared on Route 38, adding to the difficulty.
A Day of Searching
Chris spent an entire day exploring Olivine City, Route 39, and Route 38. Despite his efforts, he only managed to encounter one Snubbull.
The next day, Chris continued his journey, arriving at Ecruteak City.
