Chapter 70: 70. Charizard VS Frogadier
Charizard soared through the sky, fierce and powerful. The moment it appeared, the temperature on the battlefield noticeably increased.
Charizard was Noah's trump card, his most trusted partner. Through countless tough battles, its Flamethrower had helped elevate Noah to the rank of sophomore chief.
To the sophomore seniors, Noah and Charizard were practically one and the same.
"If you can't beat Charizard, can you really say you've beaten Noah?"
The seniors from the battling department couldn't help but cheer at Charizard's entrance.
"I haven't seen Noah's Charizard in a while."
"Unless he's up against a top-tier opponent, who else could make him use Eruption?"
Meanwhile, a senior from the Breeding Department remarked, "Isn't Dragon University's battle department supposed to be good with Water-types? How did the sophomore chief end up with a Fire-type like Charizard as his trump card?"
From Charizard's appearance, it was clear the earlier loss was not something Noah had expected. Whether it was losing to a freshman apprentice or his need to maintain his title as sophomore chief, Noah was determined to win this match and reclaim his dignity.
Bringing out Charizard meant Noah was serious.
"It's coming," Chris said, recalling Hariyama to its Poké Ball.
Dealing with a flying Charizard was too much for Hariyama.
Chris threw another Poké Ball, and Frogadier appeared on the battlefield.
Using a Water-type was the obvious choice against a Fire-type like Charizard.
Frogadier was Chris's strongest Pokémon. Before becoming a fruit farmer, Chris had relied on it as his first choice in battles, and it had now reached an impressive level 33—just four levels away from evolving.
"Brother Chris made a smart move by recalling Hariyama."
"Oh, it's a new Pokémon! I thought he'd use Combusken. Let's see if Chris's Frogadier is as strong as Combusken and Hariyama."
In the audience, only Amy, Victoria, and Tyler had seen Chris's Frogadier in action, especially Amy.
Frogadier's speed and fierce attacks had left a lasting impression on her, even though nearly a month had passed since she last saw it battle.
Leo and Jack, who had been defeated by Frogadier that day, probably hadn't forgotten either. Maybe when they lay in bed at night, all they could think about was Frogadier cutting through their defenses with ease.
"Charizard, use Flamethrower!" Noah called out, taking the initiative before the referee could even give an order.
Charizard lowered its head, releasing a stream of crimson flames that surged toward Frogadier, ready to roast it on the spot.
"Dodge, then use Water Pulse!" Chris commanded.
Frogadier leaped to the side with incredible agility, its powerful legs giving it the speed to easily avoid Charizard's Flamethrower. It puffed up its cheeks and shot out a trio of water rings aimed at Charizard.
Charizard, with a light flap of its wings, dodged the Water Pulse, twisting midair. It turned sharply, locked onto Frogadier, and dove down, its claws glowing a dark green.
Dragon Claw!
Charizard had attacked without waiting for Noah's command—either they had grown accustomed to this style, or their bond was so strong that Charizard knew what to do without needing orders.
Chris suspected the former.
"Double Team!"
Frogadier crossed its arms in front of its chest, and in an instant, its slender figure split into five identical copies.
Charizard, with its large wings and open arms, slashed through three of the Frogadiers, but each one vanished into white smoke, revealing them as mere illusions.
"Water..." Chris was about to seize the opportunity to strike from behind when Noah's voice interrupted him.
"Aerial Ace!"
Charizard, who had just flown past the illusions, suddenly flipped in midair, darting close to the ground with astonishing speed. It tore through the remaining two Frogadier clones with pinpoint precision.
Chris broke into a cold sweat.
He could see it clearly now—Noah's Charizard was highly skilled in Flying-type techniques. As the sophomore chief's trump card, Charizard's aerial prowess was unmatched. Even speed-based Pokémon like Frogadier had a hard time escaping its relentless attacks.
But now was his chance!
"Smoke!" Chris commanded, raising his hand.
Frogadier's real body swiftly dropped a black smoke bomb.
Thick, black smoke rose and shrouded the battlefield, obscuring everything from view.
Charizard flew through the smoke undeterred.
"Gust!" Noah ordered.
Charizard flapped its wings, blowing the smoke away from the field with a powerful gust.
When the smoke cleared, Frogadier and its clones had already retreated back to Chris. In its hand, the real Frogadier held a glowing golden item—a Sharp Beak!
Noah's eyes widened. He realized instantly that Chris's Frogadier must have used "Thief" when Charizard had passed through the smoke, snatching the item that boosted Charizard's Flying-type moves.
"Fling!" Chris commanded without hesitation.
Frogadier hurled the Sharp Beak with force. The golden beak turned into a shining projectile, streaking through the air. Before Charizard could react, it struck its chest, sending the mighty Fire-type crashing down to the ground.
"Frogadier, Cut!" Chris shouted.
The two Frogadiers darted toward Charizard, each wielding kunai-like blades. Their swift movements made them appear as blue blurs as they closed in on the grounded Charizard at breakneck speed.
"Flamethrower!" Noah yelled.
Charizard unleashed a powerful torrent of flames, sweeping across the battlefield in a wide arc.
But Frogadier's agility was astonishing. Both copies activated Quick Attack, barely evading the raging fire as they sped toward their target.
"Dragon Claw! Target the Frogadier that used Fling!" Noah ordered.
Charizard's claws glowed with a dark green energy, forming two massive Dragon Claws. It lunged at the Frogadier that had thrown the Sharp Beak, the claws slicing through the air.
The attack hit with a heavy impact, but something was off.
Charizard's eyes widened as it realized there was no real resistance—the Frogadier it had struck was another illusion!
Before it could react, the real Frogadier, coming from the opposite direction, slashed its kunai into Charizard's chest with an icy chill.
