Pokemon: The Legacy of Dragons

Chapter 49: The Fang Behind the Smile

Contrary to what one might expect, he was a man of immense intellect and unwavering composure. Every move he made was after meticulous planning, every action grounded in strategy. Although there were times when he was forced to act recklessly, whenever possible, he would lay out foolproof plans that kept every outcome firmly within his grasp.

He was ambitious and patient—so much so that even when the fruits of the twenty-year-long "Mewtwo Project" were stolen right out of his hands, he had the resolve to accept it without flinching. The only time he ever truly lost control of his emotions… was a decade ago.

If Logan had kept a low profile, perhaps even chosen a life of seclusion, Giovanni wouldn't have spared him a second thought. Mewtwo's power was indeed formidable—but that power depended on whose hands it was in. In the hands of an average person, Mewtwo could barely stand up to elite trainers. But in the hands of a true talent—a battle-hardened trainer—its destructive potential and influence became a whole different threat. A threat even someone like Giovanni could not ignore.

In the past two months, Logan had either been holed up at Professor Oak's lab or wandering through the depths of Viridian Forest, living like a ghost. Even Team Rocket hadn't bothered to monitor him too closely. That is, until he emerged in Pewter City and shook the region with his gym challenge. With that single match, Logan went from anonymity to notoriety—attracting not just media attention, but the full scrutiny of Team Rocket.

Giovanni had watched Logan's battle footage and had no doubt—if nothing stopped him, this boy would one day grow into a trainer that even he couldn't take lightly. And considering Logan's deep-rooted grudge against Team Rocket, his raw talent, and his swift rise, Giovanni knew that if left unchecked, this young man would become the very "silver bullet" that could pierce through everything he and his family had built over two generations.

And so, the mastermind behind Team Rocket stepped out from the shadows to act personally, determined to strangle this threat in its crib.

But Mewtwo wasn't so easy to deal with. If it had been any other Pokémon, no matter how strong, Giovanni could have locked it down with brute force. Unfortunately, Mewtwo was Psychic-type—the most versatile, unpredictable, and dangerous of all. With a capable trainer like Logan at the helm, Giovanni knew any direct assault could fail. Mewtwo could teleport Logan away with the snap of a thought. One opening, and Logan would escape—and that would be like letting a tiger back into the wild.

No, this required precision. A perfect plan—Giovanni's specialty.

He wasn't some chivalrous fool; he was a man who would use any means to reach his ends. If a frontal assault was too risky, he'd opt for deception. All he needed was a moment of lowered guard—and he'd kill Logan before he even had a chance to call out his Pokémon.

Giovanni had thoroughly researched Logan's past and had a strong grasp of his personality. Before being captured by Team Rocket, Logan had been timid, soft-hearted. And though he'd changed over the months, the Pokémon League still marketed him as a symbol of perseverance and hope. Giovanni figured no matter how much Logan had hardened, he couldn't have become completely unrecognizable in such a short time.

So Giovanni borrowed a Crobat from one of his lieutenants and used it to wrangle a swarm of wild Zubat from Mt. Moon's caves. While he couldn't exactly control the Zubat, guiding them into an orchestrated attack wasn't too difficult—just have Crobat lead the swarm like a pied piper.

Then he put on his act: pretending to be a senior League geologist attacked by wild Pokémon, staggering desperately into Logan's path. According to Giovanni's calculations, Logan would leap to his rescue. Once he got close enough and let his guard down, Giovanni would strike—swift, silent, and final. It didn't matter how many Legendary Pokémon you had if you didn't have time to throw their Poké Balls.

But no matter how carefully Giovanni planned, there was one thing he couldn't have predicted:

Logan wasn't just a changed man.

He was a different man.

A foreign soul in a familiar shell—a traveler from another world.

A variable no scheme could account for.

And so, Giovanni's luck finally ran dry. The wild Zubat couldn't be properly controlled. Despite Crobat's attempts to lead them, their instincts took over the moment they caught the scent of blood. They pounced—on him. In a heartbeat, the mighty Giovanni found himself swarmed, their tiny fangs tearing into him, draining his blood. He wasn't in mortal danger—yet—but if this kept up, it was only a matter of time before they left him a dry husk.

As Giovanni watched Logan calmly turn and walk away with his Gabite in tow, he nearly exploded from rage.

This isn't how the script is supposed to go!

He was the victim, damn it! The gallant young trainer was supposed to save him in a blaze of heroism!

What happened to that League-approved sense of justice?!

"This is outrageous! These damn bats are really sucking my blood!"

Just when Giovanni clenched his jaw and prepared to shout for Crobat to disperse the swarm—ready to throw away all pretense and charge Logan with full force—he stopped.

Logan was coming back.

With his Gabite.

Jogging sheepishly, Logan scratched his head and smiled apologetically.

"Sorry about that, mister. I'm just a newbie trainer, and I got spooked when I saw all those Zubat… and a Crobat in the mix? Scared me silly. I panicked and ran without thinking. But I realized running away and leaving someone to die isn't right. Give me a sec—I'll have Gabite help you out."

Quit talking and help me already!

Giovanni groaned internally, resisting the urge to scream.

Logan hesitated again, glancing nervously at his Pokémon. Gabite looked back at him with an innocent, questioning expression.

They shared a brief moment of confusion.

"Uhh… Gabite , use Dragon Pulse?"

Giovanni blinked.

This was the same boy whose battle videos screamed with ruthless decisiveness?

Where was that cold efficiency now?

What was with this awkward, bumbling nonsense?

Was he faking the whole time?!
