Pokémon: The Master who emerged from the slums

Chapter 3: Chapter 3: The Golden Finger

In the following days, James continued his usual routine, leading a simple life between the library and his school. He would study topics related to Pokémon breeding at the library, and whenever he encountered knowledge he didn't understand, he would consult his teachers at school.

Surprisingly, his teachers never grew tired of his occasional questions. After all, James had always been an outstanding student. Even after receiving his first Pokémon, it was likely that his practical battle results would not be bad either. And even if he couldn't get into the most prestigious universities in the League, with his grades, it wouldn't be difficult for him to get into a good school.

In fact, during future school admissions, James was likely to become the school's golden brand — a symbol of a student from humble beginnings who worked hard to attend a renowned university.

As such, the teachers were always willing to answer James' questions, without hesitation. However, there were times when James' questions left his teachers in a difficult position, especially when it came to more advanced knowledge of intermediate Pokémon breeding. These were not the types of questions that could be answered by the teachers at a basic school level.

Over the years, James hadn't wasted his time at the library. With the memories from his previous life, he had developed a unique understanding of Pokémon breeding. His knowledge base far exceeded that of a beginner breeder and had even reached an intermediate breeder level. This was because the knowledge he had about Pokémon was far more extensive than what this world knew.

Unfortunately, reality was still very different from the anime. One couldn't mix the two worlds together, so James knew that school wasn't just a meaningless activity for him.

Time quickly passed, and Saturday arrived — the day the students would receive their first Pokémon. With a heart full of excitement, James joined his class and headed to the Pokémon Center.

The Pokémon Center in this world was somewhat similar to what James had seen in the anime from his past life. It had a well-established medical system. The doctors were typically accompanied by Chansey or similar healing Pokémon, as expected for medical personnel.

However, there was one regret: this world did not have Nurse Joy. Instead, the medical staff were professionals sent from the Violet League Medical Academy.

Apart from treating Pokémon, the center also had teleportation devices for Pokémon. This was the reason why James and the others had to come here to receive their first Pokémon.

The students, organized by Autumn Xinyi, entered the Pokémon Center one by one, all of them excited and looking around, their hearts racing with anticipation. Among them, some were uncertain about which Pokémon to choose as their first, while others were simply excited to meet their first Pokémon.

Soon, the group was led into a spacious room. The room was large, almost cavernous. In the center of the room, rows upon rows of shelves were placed. On these shelves were numerous red-and-white Poké Balls, each labeled with different Pokémon names, such as Pidgey, Rattata, Meowth, Snivy, Caterpie, and Diglett.

These Pokémon were typical of the common, everyday ones found among the poorer classes. Their stats weren't particularly high, and they were very common. As for their origins, they varied.

In some regions, there was an overpopulation of Rattata or Meowth, causing problems for the local communities. The League would then dispatch trainers to capture these overabundant Pokémon. Afterward, the tamer Pokémon would be sent to breeding houses where they would be carefully bred and distributed to trainers, particularly for beginners.

Another source was from breeding houses, where some Pokémon were born to high-quality parents, both of whom had been bred in the breeding houses themselves. These Pokémon had better potential and more stable temperaments compared to wild Pokémon. After generations of careful breeding in an environment with quality resources, the Pokémon's overall potential would increase. Even if the offspring didn't inherit their parents' abilities directly, they were still likely to have good potential.

Due to the large number of students, the selection process only allowed them to choose the type of Pokémon they wanted, but they couldn't release them to assess their potential. After all, even if the Pokémon were released, most of the students, with their lack of experience, wouldn't be able to judge their true potential.

The potential of a Pokémon couldn't be determined just by looking at it. Even the most experienced breeders couldn't give an accurate assessment of a Pokémon at first glance. They could only make a rough judgment based on the Pokémon's development stage.

Moreover, many factors affected a Pokémon's potential, such as inherited moves, traits, learning abilities, and how well it could harness its native energy.

While the other students were excitedly chatting and bouncing around with enthusiasm, James remained calm. He already had a rough idea of what Pokémon he wanted to choose.

As a traveler, James wasn't without his own golden finger.

This "golden finger" had appeared in his mind as soon as he arrived in this world. However, it had been stuck on a simple page until now.

[System Task: Please, host, select your first Pokémon. The system will officially activate and reward you with a newbie gift pack. Would you like to proceed?]

Yes/No

James was quite helpless regarding the sudden appearance of the system in his mind. Despite having this system, he couldn't even start the task. It wasn't until this morning that the gray "Yes/No" option turned blue. James had finally been able to claim his first piece of starting capital in this world.

If he hadn't been able to claim it today, James would have even started to doubt whether this unreliable system was trying to scam him.

So, he had used his spare time to diligently study breeding knowledge. That way, even if this so-called system was a scam, he would at least have a useful skill and be able to stand on his own in the world.

When he finally claimed the system's newbie gift pack, all of James' previous frustration instantly disappeared.
