Chapter 6. Super Type! I Mean Psychic Type...
Pewter City, a city famous for its gray rocks, exudes an atmosphere of grandeur and weight... probably.
"Eh~ It looks different from Viridian Town." Yuu Kisaragi stood in front of the square, spire-shaped pewter city Pokémon Center, and sighed.
"Geehee..." Haunter, with its tongue lolling out, habitually licked the air—
"Seriously, you still have the energy to lick?" Yuu remained motionless, expressionless, and unimpressed. "Have I built up resistance or something... Whatever, let's hurry inside and find Nurse Joy."
...
"Nurse Joy!" Yuu presented a tray with only a single lonely Poké Ball, then pulled over the drifting Haunter. "Please take care of these two Pokémon!"
"Of course~" The Pewter City Nurse Joy, who looked exactly like the one in Viridian Town, had the same gentle smile (what a mouthful...). "Don't worry, leave them to me. In an hour, you can take them back healthy and happy!"
Nurse Joy took the tray and called over her Pokémon partner, Chansey. Yuu gave Chansey a once-over and immediately got goosebumps again: a plump, pink-feathered creature with stubby claws, walking upright, carrying a strangely colored egg on its belly...
"Ah, right, Nurse Joy..." After some thought, Yuu tentatively asked, "Do you think there's anything... unusual about my Haunter?"
"Hmm?" Nurse Joy picked up Haunter and examined it from all angles. "It looks a bit tired, but otherwise, nothing's wrong?"
"But..." Yuu stubbornly pulled out his Pokédex, pointing at the round, 2D Haunter image. "I feel like it looks different from the one in the Pokédex?"
"Well..." Nurse Joy frowned slightly, comparing the round ball on the Pokédex to the skull-like Haunter in her hands. "Maybe the shape of the smoke is different? Pokémon aren't all identical..."
"I-Is that so..." Yuu's expression was as if the sky had fallen—apparently, only he saw Pokémon as bizarre monstrosities. "Then... maybe I'm overthinking it..."
"Um... young lady, are you okay?" Nurse Joy looked worriedly at Yuu, who had practically turned gray.
"Ah, I'm fine..." Yuu turned away, despondent. "Please take care of my Pokémon... Oh, and I'm a boy..."
"Eh!?"
————————
In a restaurant next to the Pokémon Center, a dispirited Yuu listlessly poked at his omelet rice with a fork: "Scammed... totally scammed... Only I see Pokémon as grotesque monsters... Sure, the girls turned into 3D beauties, but Pokémon are the main attraction here... I'm so unlucky... It's like being the protagonist of Saya no Uta... No, at least Saya no Uta had Saya. Do I have to go catch a Muk or something?"
Well, anyone capable of crossing worlds probably isn't too fragile. Yuu quickly attempted to console himself: "No no... I should look on the bright side. At least I don't see everything as lumps of meat and jelly. I still have girls to admire... Right, there's still hope! That Psychic-type Pokémon..."
With renewed hope, Yuu perked up, wolfed down his lunch, and rushed back to the Pokémon Center. This time, he went straight to the second floor and found a Pokémon data terminal—he needed to cram Pokémon knowledge and research the traits of the Pokémon he wanted to catch, so he could plan his strategy...
Oh, and there was the mission for Weedle's evolution. And he should look up "Jinkela" too...
An hour later.
After retrieving Haunter and Weedle from the Pokémon Center, Yuu headed straight back to Viridian Forest—the nearest place to encounter wild Pokémon.
Though he'd learned a lot about Pokémon, there wasn't much info on the Psychic-type he wanted, likely because it wasn't native to Kanto.
As for "Jinkela"... Yeah, no way that existed...
First, he sent out Haunter: "Haunter, fly up high. When a wild Pokémon appears, sneak behind it and use Hypnosis!" Yuu shamelessly ordered an ambush.
It seemed that ever since acquiring that scammy ability, this kid had become increasingly reckless...
"Geehee!"
Next, Yuu held Weedle's Poké Ball and opened the system's reward menu: "Designate wild Pokémon: Aruras!"
[Beep! Target Pokémon not found. Automatically matching closest Pokémon... Ralts.]
"Ugh, close call..." Yuu wiped cold sweat discreetly. "At least I didn't misremember too badly..."
A few seconds later, a patch of grass at the forest's edge flashed white, rustled, and out popped a small, white-and-green humanoid Pokémon.
"Perfect, that's the one!" Yuu tossed the Poké Ball. "Go, Weedle! Use Poison Sting!"
Weedle emerged from the ball and fired a barrage of poisonous needles at the still-dazed Ralts.
"!" Ralts shrieked, staggered by the attack, then turned around. Its head glowed, and Weedle was suddenly flung into the air before crashing hard onto the ground—Confusion!
"Confusion? Wait, is this Ralts high-level?" Yuu promptly picked up a rock and hurled it. Ralts vanished as the rock neared, reappearing a few steps away—but the interruption broke its Confusion, and Weedle dropped safely.
"Geeheehee..." From above, the sneaky Haunter unleashed Hypnosis.
"Zzzz..." The ambush worked. Ralts swayed and collapsed, while Haunter, snoring loudly with its tongue hanging out, drifted down unsteadily.
"Uh, what's this now?" Yuu pulled out his Pokédex—this after-the-fact commentary feature was more useful than research, even if the timing sucked: "Ability: Synchronize—when burned, poisoned, or paralyzed, the opponent gains the same status condition."
"Seriously? Another brutal ability? But wait! This is sleep!"
[Beep! Due to over-leveled ability: No Holds Barred Lv1, Ralts has been enhanced. Synchronize now includes sleep, freeze, and confusion.] —The system rudely chimed in!
"...That's broken! System, have you no shame?!"
At least Hypnosis worked: "Weedle, finish it! Use String Shot, then Poison Sting!"
"..." Weedle glanced back, seemingly hesitant about the 2v1 (or technically, 3v1...) situation.
"No problem!" Yuu gave Weedle a thumbs-up. "Victory is all that matters!"
Weedle tilted its head but obediently attacked—another Pokémon corrupted...
"Good job!" Yuu pulled out a Poké Ball and lobbed it at the poor, silk-wrapped Ralts, still fast asleep—
Faced with such a shameless trainer, the Poké Ball barely shook twice before settling.
"Heheh..." Yuu picked up the ball. "I was so focused on catching it, I didn't get a good look... Come out, Ralts!"
A flash of light later, the still-hypnotized Ralts reappeared.
"Ugh..." Upon closer inspection, Yuu's heart sank. While Ralts looked like an adorable big-headed doll from afar, the details were horrifying: its "white robe" was actually keratinous skin, its limbs hid sharp little claws, and its elongated sleeves were extra flaps of skin. The red, bony crest on its head was hard, jagged, and sharp—without Undying Lv1, Yuu had no doubt it could impale him. The green "hair" covering its eyes was made of tiny scales, beneath which lurked huge, pupil-less ET-like eyes. Oh, and its face had no other visible features—just a cold, mask-like surface.
"I'm an idiot... really..." Yuu dropped to his knees. "I shouldn't have trusted the system... If Ralts looks like this, Gardevoir's hopeless... I should've aimed for a Legendary... Waaah..."
[Beep! Ability upgraded: No Holds Barred Lv2—when battling wild or certain non-wild Pokémon, multiple Pokémon can be used in combat. (In battle, right and wrong don't matter—only victory!)]
