Chapter 4: Error
Suddenly, the scene froze in front of you.
Haruki — the same boy who was talking to you at the beginning — reappeared, nervously fiddling with a small remote in his hands.
He exhaled deeply, letting out a long, frustrated sigh.
"Great... here we go. It's not working."
He shot you an irritated look, as if you were somehow to blame for this disaster.
"So what are we supposed to do now?"
Before he could continue complaining, a girl with bright orange hair suddenly entered the frame.
She stepped toward him lightly and asked with curious eyes.
"What's going on?"
Haruki glanced at her and gestured toward the controller.
"I think it's... malfunctioning."
Then he turned his eyes back to you and pointed a thumb in her direction.
"This is Yami."
He leaned closer to the screen, tilting his head slightly as if about to reveal a dangerous secret.
"She's a Viking, so… try not to overanalyze her behavior, alright?"
Then he stepped back with a grin and turned to Yami.
"Yami, say hi to the reader."
Yami gave you a long, judgmental look — scanning you from head to toe like you were a bizarre antique.
Her eyebrows knit together, lips curling in a faint scowl. Then she leaned toward Haruki and muttered sarcastically.
"This is what people from the future look like? Disappointing."
Haruki slapped a hand over his mouth to stifle his laughter but failed, chuckling as he nudged her shoulder.
"Come on, you can't just roast the reader like that!"
Yami rolled her eyes lazily, then raised a hand in a half-hearted salute — clearly just to get it over with — and said in a flat, indifferent voice.
"Hello."
Their attention quickly shifted back to the stalled remote, both of them staring at it as if it held the key to their survival.
Yami extended her hand toward Haruki and said confidently.
"Give it to me. I know how to handle these things."
Haruki hesitated for a few seconds, torn between worry and curiosity... but in the end, he handed her the device.
She pressed one of the buttons — nothing.
She pressed again — no response.
Anger began to show on her face. Her jaw clenched tightly, teeth grinding with fury.
"Urrgh!!"
she screamed in frustration, and suddenly — she threw the device with all her strength onto the ground.
It shattered into scattered pieces.
The walls around them began to crack slowly, the sound deafening. And then — they collapsed completely.
Strange creatures ran in every direction without stopping.
A massive dragon fled, roaring, as a pack of ghouls chased it fiercely. A wizard ran behind a tiny goblin who had stolen his magic wand, spreading chaos wherever he went.
And above them, a black cloud suddenly formed in the sky, unleashing violent lightning that struck the ground again and again.
In the middle of it all, Haruki and Yami stood emotionlessly, watching the chaos unfold like it was a boring TV show.
Haruki raised his phone to his ear and spoke calmly.
"Hey, Noor."
A voice on the other end replied, irritated and cold.
"How many times have I told you not to call me that? … What is it, you idiot?"
Haruki answered with complete nonchalance.
"Yami and I… kinda broke the control device."
"You what?!"
Noroi shouted directly into his ear, making Haruki wince a little from the volume, but he responded in the same indifferent tone.
"Come on, man. It's not the worst thing we've done."
Noroi sighed deeply, rubbing his temple like his head was starting to throb. He wasn't ready to deal with their nonsense today.
But he didn't even get the chance to think…
BOOM!
The fleeing dragon stomped on the broken controller, crushing it further until only sparks remained. Wild electric currents burst out in all directions.
Haruki watched the scene, rubbed his chin thoughtfully, and commented in a skeptical tone.
"I think we... might be in bigger trouble now."
Yami raised her hand and gave Haruki a light smack on the back as she smiled.
"Brilliant as always! I never would've noticed without your genius insight."
The electric currents surging from the shattered control device grew stronger, intensifying until they began to distort time and space around you, warping everything.
And then—suddenly—darkness fell.
A complete blackout.
The connection between you and Haruki was cut off.
And so... time rewound,
Back to a distant past, twenty-three years ago.
