Chapter 6: Chapter 1.5
As Xi Lian was making his way out of school, a few students suddenly blocked his path in the corridor.
There were still some students lingering nearby, but no one stepped forward to help him. This wasn't the first time—it had happened to the original Xi Lian many times before.
"Xi Lian, where's today's lunch money?" A boy with smoky gray hair demanded, his voice loud enough to draw attention.
"I don't have any money to give," Xi Lian replied firmly.
The thin boy beside him scoffed. "You've grown some wings, huh?"
Xi Lian's gaze flickered behind them, and his expression changed as he gasped, "Teacher Zhou?"
Startled, the bullies instinctively turned their heads to look.
That was all the opening Xi Lian needed. Without hesitation, he bolted down the hallway. He wasn't foolish enough to fight them—his current body was too weak to stand a chance.
Realizing they had been tricked, the thin boy with a hollow face cursed. "Boss, there's no teacher. He fooled us!"
The leader, Shen Wei, clenched his jaw in frustration. "That coward dared trick us? Let's see how he runs away tomorrow," he sneered.
Unbeknownst to them, a figure with striking red hair stepped out from behind the corridor wall after they left.
Lu Minzhe narrowed his sharp eyes, a smirk playing on his lips.
"Xi Lian? Interesting…"
With that, he turned and walked away.
Only after Xi Lian had covered half the distance running did he finally relax, slowing his pace to steady his breath.
"System, is there any way to make me stronger?" he asked, his tone carrying a hint of expectation.
"Yes, host. However, the process is gradual to avoid suspicion, and you currently lack the required points to redeem it," the mechanical voice responded coolly.
Xi Lian frowned, then suddenly thought of something. "Isn't there a novice gift pack or something?" His voice held a trace of excitement. He had almost forgotten to ask.
"No, host," the system replied without hesitation.
Xi Lian's expression darkened. "Then what can you even do besides reminding me about missions?" he asked sarcastically.
"The system is responsible for selecting a suitable body for the host, keeping track of the protagonist, issuing missions, and reminding the host—who is quite prone to forgetting—about said missions, among other simple tasks," the system explained in its usual cold tone.
However, Xi Lian could almost swear there was a hint of mockery in its voice.
After a few minutes of silent resistance from Xi Lian, he finally gave in and asked, "Where are Jun Hao and Lu Minzhe right now?"
The system responded in its usual mechanical tone, "Host, Jun Hao is currently in the school library, which will remain open until evening. Lu Minzhe, on the other hand, is on his way home."
Arriving at the Jun family's residence, Xi Lian stepped inside to find the hall empty, the usual quietness of the house greeting him. Without lingering, he made his way to his room, where he changed into more comfortable clothes before settling at his desk to finish his homework.
By the time he completed his assignments, the sky outside had darkened slightly. Feeling a bit hungry, he decided to head downstairs for some snacks. As he passed through the living room, he noticed Mr. Jun sitting on the couch, engrossed in a book, his expression calm and focused.
After coming back with fruits, Xi Lian noticed that Jun Hao's door was slightly open. He paused for a moment, hesitating whether he should knock or peek inside. But after a brief internal struggle, he chose not to. Today's interactions had been enough—there was no need to push his luck any further. Shaking off the thought, he turned away and headed back to his own room.
There was nothing more for him to do, so Xi Lian decided to analyze the original Xi Lian's memories.
This world functioned similarly to his own, with only a few minor historical differences. After familiarizing himself with those changes, he shifted his focus to the original Xi Lian's life.
The original Xi Lian came from a well-off family. His parents were always busy, and his older brother—five years his senior—was studying abroad. Because of this, he had been sent to live with his aunt. Their distant interactions made it feel as if they were strangers rather than family.
As Xi Lian pondered over this, a sudden knock on the door pulled him from his thoughts.
"Who?" Xi Lian called out.
There was a brief silence before a familiar voice responded.
"Jun Hao. Come down for dinner."
Without waiting for a reply, Jun Hao turned and left.
Dinner passed in silence, with only occasional conversation between Jun Meiling and Aunt Jun breaking the stillness.
After returning to his room, Xi Lian collapsed onto the bed, exhaustion settling into his bones.
"Host, the system is entering sleep mode. Unless it's an emergency, do not contact me," the mechanical voice announced before Xi Lian felt a strange sensation in his head—brief and fleeting—before everything returned to normal.
Lying in bed, his mind began replaying the day's memories, as it often did before sleep. His thoughts drifted aimlessly until they settled on something peculiar. The system always calls me 'Host,' even though it knows my name. It feels like it's deliberately keeping a distance… how strange.
Or maybe it just operates like this.
With that lingering thought, he unknowingly drifted into sleep.
