Chapter 8: Chapter 1.7
A few months passed in the blink of an eye, and the mid-term exams were now behind them. Today, the results would be announced.
The classroom buzzed with excitement and nervous chatter as students eagerly estimated their scores, but the noise didn't seem to affect the quiet boy sitting by the window, gazing outside in contemplation.
"System, how will I know my progress? Isn't there supposed to be a progress bar?" Xi Lian asked in his mind.
"No, Host. However, you can purchase one from the system store," the system replied indifferently.
Xi Lian didn't respond out loud but silently thought, Stingy.
A while later, the teacher arrived, followed closely by Li Xang, who carried a stack of papers. Everyone immediately understood—it was time for their results.
As the bundle of answer sheets was placed on the teacher's desk, the students' reactions varied. Some were excited, eager to see their scores, while others grew nervous, dreading the outcome. A few remained indifferent, unconcerned about their performance, while those who had studied diligently sat with quiet confidence, waiting for their names to be called.
The teacher first started his usual nagging before saying in a happy voice, "Some students' results have improved from last year!"
Then, he began calling students according to their roll numbers, scolding those with poor marks and praising those who performed well.
Soon, it was Xi Lian's turn. The teacher glanced at his paper and said with slight surprise, "Xi Lian, your performance has improved this year. Your rank is in the top 5 of the class. Keep up the hard work!"
"Thank you, Teacher Zhou." Collecting his answer sheet, Xi Lian returned to his seat.
"Congratulations, Xi Lian!" Li Xang said happily.
Following his words, other students joined in—
"Yeah, congrats, bro!"
"Thanks, everyone," Xi Lian replied, a small smile tugging at his lips. After all, his efforts had paid off.
Though he had been trying to interact with his classmates occasionally, if not for his task, he wouldn't bother socializing at all.
"Xi Lian, are you coming to the party today?" someone asked. To celebrate passing the midterms, some well-off students had decided to throw a party.
"No, I have something to do today. I won't be able to come."
Xi Lian refused the perfect opportunity to mingle with his classmates, albeit reluctantly. This morning, a phone call had come from the original Xi Lian's home—his mother wanted him to visit.
He almost felt sorry for the original Xi Lian. From the memorise ,his family only called him during exams and festivals. But for him, it worked out just fine.
"System, how is the body chosen for me in each world?" Xi Lian asked.
The system knew exactly what he was worried about. Ever since the phone call, Xi Lian had been a little tense.
In its usual indifferent tone, the system explained, **"Host, there are three criteria for selecting your body: First, the body must be compatible with you to minimize rejection. At most, you'll experience mild nausea, headaches, or body pain. The next two are optional but make completing the task easier.
Second, the original soul must have strong regrets.
And lastly, the body should have some connection to the protagonist, providing a natural way to interact with them."**
Xi Lian remained silent for a moment before narrowing his dark brown eyes—hidden beneath the curtain of his long hair. "What happens if the first condition isn't met? Does that mean I won't be assigned a body, or will the system force me into one?"
The indifferent voice echoed in his mind. "Host does not need to worry. Forcing you into an incompatible body would either kill you before the task begins or make you extremely sick—neither of which is beneficial to the mission. In such cases, the system generates a new body for the host."
Xi Lian's eyes sharpened slightly. "Will that cost coins?" He asked without hesitation, recalling how even the progress bar had to be purchased.
The system fell silent for a brief moment before replying coldly, "No."
As the school day ended, Xi Lian packed his belongings at a leisurely pace, unaffected by the excited chatter of students eagerly discussing today's gathering.
"Will the host not interact with the protagonist duo today? Lu Minzhe is waiting at the gate," the system informed him in its usual indifferent tone.
"Not today," Xi Lian replied without hesitation. His thoughts were elsewhere.
Despite knowing that the original Xi Lian had little interaction with his family and that they likely held no expectations for him, he couldn't shake the nervousness creeping in.He was nervous about meeting them for the first time.
Leisurely walking out of school, Xi Lian noticed a handsome figure standing beside a sleek car, engrossed in his mobile phone. From the memories he had gained, he instantly recognized the man—his older brother in this world, Xi Ran.
A subtle quickening of his heartbeat startled him as Xi Ran glanced up, meeting his gaze. Without a change in his composed demeanor, Xi Ran strolled over, his movements as fluid and graceful as ever.
