Chapter 71: Reporting To A Vampire?
Your mother.
Rael cleared his throat. "Roger sent me. I met him when I first arrived here."
"You arrived...?" The guard tilted his head, lowering his spear. "Show me your arms."
"Sure?" Rael extended his arms forward, and the guard grabbed hold of them, neatly inspecting them.
Is he looking for that Hollow Touch infection thingy? Rael thought, as the guard finished his inspection and stepped back.
However, that poker face seemed a bit alarming.
"Okay, strip."
Rael's expression hardened as he looked the exhausted guard straight in the eyes.
"No."
"I need to check the other areas, so if you don't strip, I'm not letting you in." The guard shrugged. "The lurkers become very active during these hours, so for your own safety, I'd get this over and done with."
You want to play that game, don't you...? Rael let out a sigh as he proceeded to buy one neat little product.
•—Premium Shop—•
Category: Toxic/Alcohol
•—Balance: 6,522,363 Trell—•
• Wine which aged for 1,000 years because the procrastinating magician thought it wasn't ready yet (Rare): 5,000 Trell
Pretty cheap, Rael hummed as a red bottle of wine appeared in his hands, startling the guard.
"I believe we can make do with this? It's pretty tasty from what I've heard." Rael tilted the bottle, threatening to drop it. "Of course, if you don't want it, then—"
"Fine!" The guard shot forward, gently grabbing the bottle from Rael's hands and warily glancing at him. "I'll get in a lot of trouble if you do something stupid, so please refrain from that. Also, Roger is an important man, so whenever he comes back, he'll have a word with you."
"Roger won't be coming back." Rael broke the news. "He was infected at the time I met him, and he was on his way... you know where."
The guard flinched, then suddenly chucked the wine bottle into his inventory and turned toward the massive open gate behind him.
"Follow me—we're going to see the chieftain."
Immediately, the guard sprinted off, and Rael trailed close behind.
The gate seemed simple enough, with a massive plank lowered by a mechanism, while the entire encampment was surrounded by water.
And as he ran on the plank, he noticed that the drop would definitely get most people killed—maybe even him.
Nonetheless, after a few short moments of running, they arrived at the inner part of the encampment, and then, the guard ran to the side before flicking a switch.
In an instant, the massive plank retracted itself upward, shutting the hole in the gate closed.
At the same time, Rael noticed a few shadowy figures falling from the plank and tumbling down into the water below.
Rest in pieces, Rael noted, as he took a deep breath and glanced around.
Tents, tattered brick buildings, and even a few fancy mansions in the distance.
There was everything.
Yet the people didn't look as great, as most seemed malnourished, tired, and literally on the brink of death.
Hmm... I'll give them some bread after I'm done here. Rael thought and continued following the guard until, eventually, they reached one of the mansions he had seen a moment ago.
Some windows were broken, but it was still fancy.
Though that smell... Rael's brows furrowed. It's blood. A lot of blood.
But since the guard didn't seem fazed, Rael followed him inside, passed through the halls, and entered the living room.
On a massive couch lay a handsome man with peculiar black hair and red eyes.
He was surrounded by two women, who had bite marks on their necks.
Rael's eyes widened as a certain suspicion grew.
Don't tell me...
—Thalor, The Vampire Noble (General Class Boss) [Level 198] [102,992,001/298,661,722 HP]
I can see his name and level... is it because of the Primordial Sight skill? Rael pondered.
His Inspect Monster skill was around level 40 now, and he could definitely not see this many levels above him under normal circumstances.
But if the Inspect function was upgraded because of his Primordial Sight, then...
"Thalor, I've brought a newbie over," the guard stated, earning a disinterested glare from Thalor.
"Is that so? Greetings to you, and I hope you can carry out your duties just as well as your human counterparts," Thalor said with a smile as a wave of pressure washed over Rael again.
However, like the previous times, he wasn't affected.
The girls, however, ran off, leaving just the three of them here.
"Anyways..." The guard broke the awkward atmosphere. "I barged in so suddenly because Roger has died."
Upon hearing that, Thalor froze, his red eyes trembling.
"My brother is dead...? What...?"
The guard nodded. "This person here saw Roger's last moments, from what I've been told. He also said that Roger was infected."
A heavy silence ensued, broken by a single sigh from Thalor.
"I always had my suspicions that he was infected... but then again, I guess it was my own stupidity for believing everything was going to be fine."
Thalor turned to Rael and stood up before approaching him.
"Whatever your name may be, I thank you. Roger is my blood brother, so if he's really dead, then I'll have to prepare the funeral for tomorrow."
"I see... This might not be the right time, but could you answer some questions?" Rael narrowed his eyes. "How do I get out of here?"
"You can't." Thalor shook his head. "I've looked far and wide and so have the others. There's no way out of here."
That's pure bullshit, just like Roger's rambling. Rael scoffed. "I asked Roger this, but he couldn't give me a straight answer. But how long have you been in this place?"
"I believe you've already noticed, but I'm a vampire," Thalor said, showing his fangs. "We live for thousands of years on average, and I arrived here as a baby... so around 417 years ago."
No information about an exit in 417 years...
Rael simply didn't buy it.
However, he didn't voice it out loud, as despite this vampire being friendly, at the slightest provocation, Thalor might turn on Rael.
Though I could just cover this entire place in garlic—that might do the trick... if the kid's books weren't bullshitting me, of course. Rael thought as he nodded at Thalor.
However, just as he was about to ask another question, a siren blared, followed by a deep voice loudly repeating itself.
—INFECTED! INFECTED! INFECTED!
"Another one..." Thalor let out a sigh, turning to Rael.
"New guy, follow me."
