Chapter 74
After leaving Shen Garden, Chu Muxi sent a message to Lu Junzhi.
“I’ll go back to Chu Mansion to pick up some things first. You can wait for me there.”
Lu Junzhi replied quickly, “Chu family? Why are you getting there?”
“Taking my mother’s things.”
“Okay, I get it.”
Chu Muxi put away the communication device. Shen Wu’s assistant, whom Shen Wu had called for him, was waiting outside, and Chu Muxi boarded the aircraft.
“Let’s go,” he said tersely.
The man was one of Shen Garden’s bodyguards, and Chu Muxi had only met him once before, on the night of the coming-of-age ceremony.
The bodyguard had heard some rumors from his colleagues about this young master, who was Mr. Shen’s grandson and the son of the former eldest daughter Shen Lan.
The eldest young lady had died of illness that year, and Mr. Shen wanted to bring the young master back to Shen Garden. However, the young master had actively rejected this idea and even had a big quarrel with Mr. Shen, blaming Mr. Shen’s coercion for his mother’s early death.
Not to mention the son-in-law of the Shen family named Chu. Every time he visited Shen Garden, there was a hint of shrewdness and cunning in his eyes, as if he regarded Shen Garden as his own.
The captain of their bodyguard team once sighed, saying that it was a pity that the eldest young lady had chosen such a husband for her noble self. The final outcome was even more disappointing.
Therefore, people in Shen Garden did not have a good impression of this young master, whom they had only met a few times as a child.
They felt that he had been led astray by his shrewd father and only cared about money, having a bad character.
But that night at the coming-of-age ceremony, they saw him chatting happily with Mr. Shen’s friends, acting calmly and confidently, and their perception of him gradually changed again.
.
“What?” Chu Muxi suddenly said.
The bodyguard was startled, “What’s the matter, young master?”
Chu Muxi chuckled, “I should be asking you, why are you always staring at me? Is there something on my face?” He raised his hand as he spoke and touched his face.
The bodyguard felt as though he had been seen through and sheepishly apologized. “I’m sorry, I was distracted just now.”
“Yeah, it’s okay. In fact, I sometimes get distracted in front of the mirror,” Chu Muxi joked. “I can’t help it. It’s hard to give up natural beauty. I don’t blame you.”
The bodyguard couldn’t help but smile. “Young master, you-”
“What?” Chu Muxi raised his eyebrows, “What about me?”
“You are different from what they said,” the bodyguard said earnestly.
Chu Muxi nodded and chuckled at himself, “I know, you all looked down on me back then, right?”
The bodyguard was momentarily speechless, scratching his head awkwardly before falling into silence.
“Everyone has a time when they are young and frivolous. Fortunately, it’s not too late for me to wake up,” Chu Muxi said, turning to gaze out the window. Yes, he had died once; how could he not have woken up?
The bodyguard felt a little lost at the change in his tone. He could only reply sincerely, “Well, it’s good to be able to find your way back!”
Chu Muxi glanced back at him with a playful expression, “You look very young. Ah, you’ve only recently joined Shen Garden, right?” He was tall and imposing, and Chu Muxi hadn’t expected someone from his grandfather’s bodyguard team to be interested in his reputation.
“The current captain is my uncle. I… I came from the Second Army,” the bodyguard explained, a hint of reluctance flickering across his face.
Curious, Chu Muxi probed, “The Second Army seems to be supported by the Sun family, one of the eight major families.” The Sun family? Chu Muxi suddenly recalled something and began to ponder deeply.
He remembered a time when Chu Tianhao had entertained a guest at home. He was still young then, barely over six years old. His mother was ill and hospitalized, and his father had been absent for several days.
It was a rare occasion for his father to return home. Little Chu Muxi had rushed downstairs to greet his father, but his father stopped him, ordering him to go back upstairs immediately and forbidding him from coming down.
The house was eerily silent at that time, devoid of any servants. Chu Muxi was startled by Chu Tianhao’s stern tone and obediently returned to his room, clutching his stuffed bear.
Later, he heard noises downstairs and curiosity got the better of him. He quietly approached the railing on the second floor and peered down. There, he saw a man in military uniform being greeted by Chu Tianhao at the door.
The two conversed quietly, their words too muffled for Chu Muxi to discern. All he could recall was the way Chu Tianhao addressed the man when opening the door: “Colonel Sun.” Chu Tianhao’s deferential attitude towards that man, looking back now, seemed excessively servile, even obsequious.
Chu Muxi’s recollection of this incident was triggered by his thoughts of his mother’s belongings just now. Because the day after Chu Tianhao met that man, an unexpected visitor arrived at their home—He Hui, along with her two children.
“Young master, we have arrived,” the bodyguard announced as he halted the aircraft and opened the hatch.
Chu Muxi straightened his attire and stepped out calmly.
As he approached the villa’s entrance, a shrill female voice pierced the air from a distance.
“Chu Muxi, you wretched bitch, how dare you come back?!”
