Rebirth in Blood: The Sun of Sin

Chapter 12: The Mutant

The information from Wenya seemed to align perfectly with the legendary "mutants" from the old world.

They were not Awakened but possessed extraordinary abilities.

Such individuals were extremely rare among humans—perhaps one in every few million.

Before the apocalypse, they often played roles as mystics, shamans, or fortune tellers, tapping into hidden powers.

Unlike Awakened individuals who wielded brute strength and supernatural abilities, Mutants were typically characterized by mental prowess.

They had an inherent ability to surpass the mental limits of an average human, with an inner strength far beyond normal thresholds.

When the apocalypse came, Mutants were marked as level 1, different from the common player who started at level 0.

However, their powers often came with a price—since they had never trained their mental abilities, they struggled to control their energy, causing it to leak uncontrollably.

Mutants didn't possess physical strength but instead wielded immense mental power.

This allowed them to provide others with mental energy, acting as "batteries" for other Awakened individuals.

Mental power was crucial for sustained combat, and with a Mutant offering support from the rear, an Awakened person could fight at a level above their normal capabilities—almost like gaining an additional tier of strength!

In the chaotic world of the apocalypse, such individuals were highly coveted by various factions.

In this brutal new world, nothing was more valuable than power.

But unfortunately, no one willingly accepts becoming a mere tool for others.

Once a Mutant was discovered, they were often captured and bound under strict control.

The fortunate ones would be treated as precious "resources," kept safe for their potential.

The unfortunate ones, however, would lose their freedom and become nothing more than pawns in someone else's game.

That said, in a way, Lin An himself could be considered a Mutant.

Before his Awakening, his mental capacity had already surpassed the normal limits, reaching an astonishing 12 points.

Of course, whether Wenya truly was a Mutant remained a mere hypothesis for Lin An.

Rather than continue to speculate, it was better to simply seize the opportunity and take action.

Without hesitation, Lin An closed his "Judgment Eye" and turned to head back.

The distance between them was only a few hundred meters, and with his current speed, he would reach her in no time.

He had always planned to build his own faction. Not only would establishing a safe zone improve his chances of survival in the apocalypse, but after three months, the game would give players who formed safe zones special quests.

Completing these quests would lead to power boosts.

These quests usually required substantial manpower and resources—tasks too difficult for solo players to accomplish.

If Wenya was indeed a Mutant, he would recruit her immediately.

With a Mutant on his side, his own strength would receive a tremendous boost.

In fact, it would provide a unique advantage—essentially, it was like giving his entire faction's Awakened members a free upgrade.

A potential Mutant was certainly worth the risk of action.

On top of a car, Li Zhiping stared intently at Wenya, his face twisted with an eerie sense of alertness.

His mouth hung open, letting out unintelligible growls.

His eyes, bloodshot and bulging, were a clear sign of the virus's progression.

It had been 7 minutes since he was infected by the zombie virus, and with his already fragile mental state and weak physical condition, he was rapidly losing control.

"Itchy... so itchy..."

Li Zhiping muttered, scratching violently at his skin with his hands.

His nails tore through flesh, and large chunks of skin peeled off, falling to the car roof.

He showed no sign of pain, continuing to scratch faster, almost as if deriving pleasure from the act.

Skin and flesh peeled off in sheets, exposing the raw, bloody tissue beneath.

Wenya, her heart racing with terror, gripped a small utility knife in her right hand.

Her legs instinctively moved backward, but to her horror, there was nowhere to retreat.

A nearby zombie smelled the blood and became even more agitated.

Wenya gritted her teeth, fighting back the fear. Her skin, as pale as death itself, betrayed the panic inside her.

The moment Li Zhiping had asked her to inspect his wounds, she had feared this moment might come.

Fortunately, she had managed to grab a set of keys in her escape.

The keys were attached to a small folding knife—her only weapon on the car roof.

"AHHH!"

Li Zhiping suddenly shrieked, his body convulsing as chunks of skin and flesh continued to fall away.

His bones creaked ominously, and in the blink of an eye, he transformed into a zombie.

"ROAR!"

His eyes bulged out as his mouth stretched open in a grotesque manner, revealing rows of jagged teeth. He lunged at Wenya, a mindless hunger driving him.

She quickly crouched to the ground, narrowly avoiding his deadly lunge.

But despite her fitness from regular exercise, she had never trained for combat. She only managed to evade him by instinct, twisting her body out of his reach.

For an ordinary person, merely maintaining control and not collapsing from terror when confronted by a zombie was an achievement in itself.

"BAM!"

She didn't dodge fast enough and was knocked down by the sheer force of Li Zhiping's tackle.

Her back slammed into the car roof with a heavy thud.

The impact was so strong it left her bruised, the pain shooting through her body as her shoulder blades cracked under the pressure.

Grimacing, Wenya fought through the excruciating pain. Unlike those who would freeze in fear, her hand tightened around the knife, and she thrust it into the back of Li Zhiping's head with everything she had.

The stench of decay filled her nose as the zombie's bloodshot eyes locked onto her. There was only one thought in those eyes—hunger.

"Slish"

The utility knife plunged deep into Li Zhiping's skull, right into the exposed area of his brainstem, the one part of his head unprotected by bone.

He was instantly paralyzed, his body going limp as his brain was destroyed.

The former man-turned-monster collapsed lifelessly to the car roof.

Wenya, breathless and exhausted, pushed the zombie's body off her, gasping for air.

Her chest heaved as sweat poured down her face, her hair in disarray, her mind still trying to process the nightmare she had barely escaped.

She had just cheated death, and now she could barely stand, her shoulder still burning with pain.

Suddenly, a new danger emerged.

"BAM!"

The sound of another impact reverberated through the car.

"ROAR!"

The space on the car roof, already cramped, became even more chaotic.

With Li Zhiping dead, the car roof was drenched in blood, slick and slippery beneath her feet.

In a daze, Wenya tried to get back on her feet but lost her balance and collapsed.

"AHHH!"

With a vicious pull, zombies below her began to tear at her hair, dragging her closer to the edge.

Like a drowning person being pulled into the depths, she was being dragged to her doom.

Desperation and rage filled her heart as the world around her seemed to spin out of control.

In this post-apocalyptic world, her fight for survival had only just begun.
