Rebirth in Blood: The Sun of Sin

Chapter 9: Night with An Xia

"Lin Ge, are you leaving?"

"Is my brother... okay?"

An Xia leaned against the wall, carefully watching Lin An as he worked on repairing the door.

She, having no knowledge of the apocalypse, didn't realize the danger she would face if Lin An failed to get the antidote.

Her hands were clasped behind her back, her slender fingers nervously twisting the edge of her clothing.

Beneath her long skirt, her white legs were slightly scratched.

Her once pristine white dress was now stained with blood and dirt, making it appear shabby.

Her frail body, watching Lin An's face, looked even paler, making her seem pitiable.

"Clang!"

Lin An carefully reinstalled the iron door that had been kicked in.

Since becoming an awakened one, he was still adjusting to his newfound strength.

The once hard metal felt like plastic in his hands, easily bending.

If he wasn't careful, he could easily destroy the door.

So, Lin An had to gather discarded steel bars and patch up the broken parts of the door. It wasn't pretty, but it was still functional.

After installing the door, he paused for a moment.

"An Xia, I'll be back soon. Don't worry about me."

He didn't plan to hide anything from her.

"Jingtian."

Lin An paused again, then turned to give An Xia a reassuring smile.

"You and Jingtian will be fine."

"Trust me."

He sighed lightly.

Since he was young, his parents had left him early.

An Xia and An Jingtian were the only people he truly cared about.

Although there was no blood relation, they were like family.

Jingtian's parents had always treated him like their own son, and An Xia and her brother had treated him as their older brother, living together since childhood.

An Xia and An Jingtian were the last remaining people in his heart.

An Xia looked at Lin An's determined face, her expression dazed.

Her eyes reddened.

Listening to Lin An's familiar tone, she felt reassured.

Just like when they were kids.

It felt like, as long as Lin An and her brother were there, there was nothing to fear.

"Lin Ge."

"When are you leaving?"

"Can you..."

An Xia looked at Lin An, still working, and timidly asked.

She was afraid of disturbing him.

After hesitating for a long time, An Xia still couldn't bring herself to voice her thoughts.

She wanted Lin An to stay a little longer with her.

The screams of zombies and humans in the neighborhood never ceased.

Her brother was unconscious.

She was terrified.

But she was also afraid that saying these things would be too selfish and would affect the things Lin An needed to do.

After sealing the windows of the house, the room became pitch dark.

Lin An turned around. His enhanced vision made the darkness seem like daylight to him.

"We'll leave tomorrow morning."

"I'll stay here tonight."

Lin An understood the look in An Xia's eyes.

Don't forget, An Xia was just a little girl.

In his past life, even as a soldier at the start of the apocalypse, he too had been fearful and uncertain.

In the face of life and death, during the apocalypse, many people with weak mental endurance even chose to end their own lives.

"Really?!"

An Xia lifted her head in surprise, looking toward Lin An in the darkness.

Though she couldn't see him, she knew he was there.

Lin An didn't reply, instead walking over to An Xia and gently ruffling her hair.

The faint smell of her body wash mixed with the blood and sweat in his nostrils.

It wasn't that he had lingered because of any romantic feelings.

The Stitcher hadn't appeared yet.

In 12 hours, the zombie in Wan Da Plaza would mutate into the Stitcher.

Subtracting the two hours of travel time, he still had about 10 hours to spend at Jingtian's place.

Moreover, his current state was terrible, and he needed rest.

After continuous battles and the constant use of his awakening abilities, his body had reached its limit, and he was now solely relying on his willpower to push through.

He pulled the young girl into his arms.

An Xia buried her face in his chest, her body trembling.

"Lin An Ge, I'm so scared..."

Lin An felt the tremble in her body, remaining silent.

He simply tightened his right arm behind her.

The night passed in silence.

The next morning.

Outside the window, there was no longer the usual chirping of birds.

The sharp wails of people woke Lin An from his sleep. A man's panicked cry for help was quickly drowned out by the growls of zombies.

After a moment, the screams stopped.

It seemed someone had died.

Lin An didn't pay any attention to it.

When he woke up, he found that he was in peak condition, full of strength.

After a proper rest, he recovered quickly. This was the benefit of having a data-based template.

Lin An quickly checked An Jingtian's condition, relieved to find that he was stable. His gaze then shifted to An Xia, curled up on the sofa, and he shook his head slightly.

An Xia, still asleep, furrowed her delicate brow slightly, her hands instinctively reaching out beside her.

Her small, exquisite face still showed traces of tears.

Lin An couldn't help but smile bitterly.

It was clear that An Xia had been crying for quite some time last night.

He casually covered her with a blanket before quietly walking over to the window to observe the situation outside.

Looking out the window, the distant skyscrapers had smoke rising from the top, as if they had been burning all night. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky. On one of the rooftops, survivors waved white cloth flags in desperation, hoping for military rescue.

Little did they know, this apocalypse was far more terrifying than they had imagined.

Lin An withdrew his gaze and looked at the interior of the neighborhood.

Not far away, the shrill sound of a car alarm pierced the air, attracting a large number of zombies. On the roadside, several zombies were crouched down, greedily devouring flesh from a corpse. Through the security windows, Lin An could occasionally catch glimpses of zombies passing by in the building across the street.

In just a short amount of time, the city's order had completely collapsed.

After the outbreak, with no one to manage the city, it would soon decay.

As Lin An stood in silence, he instinctively reached into his pants pocket for a lighter to light a cigarette.

Smoking while thinking was his habit.

But after searching for a while, he realized he didn't have his lighter.

It was then that he realized his bloodstained clothes were now completely clean.

Lin An couldn't help but laugh bitterly.

It seemed that An Xia had secretly changed his clothes last night, removing the bloodied ones.

Since they were about the same size, the clothes fit him perfectly.

"Ding ding."

The alarm he set last night rang.

Lin An crushed the cigarette in his hand, giving one last lingering glance at the two of them.

But just before he left, as he turned his back, a tear traced down An Xia's face as she slept.
