Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse

Chapter 180: Visiting

After descending the stairs, Su Jin presented the various dishes she had just selected from within her Space.

Guo Yang and the others were very grateful that Su Jin’s Space contained so much ready-to-eat food; otherwise, if they had to cook inside the house every time, even with the doors and windows firmly shut, some of the smell would still waft outside.

Now, although the hot meals Su Jin served still emitted enticing aromas, as long as they kept the doors and windows closed tight, none of the scents would escape outside.

Knowing that Liang Jiuqing and Zheng Miaomiao would come in the afternoon, they had the door leading to the yard open after lunch to air out the smell.

Su Jin also cleared away the fruits set in the center of the table, replacing them with dried fruits and other snacks from the supermarket.

In the apocalypse, not to mention fruits—even vegetables had become luxuries; it was quite normal for vegetables to cost more than meat since there were still mutant animal meats to consume, and some domestic animals and poultry had not mutated.

Thinking of this, Su Jin suddenly felt that perhaps they should take advantage of the current time to hunt some mutant animals.

Soon, when the rains came, the plants would start to mutate as well, and hunting mutant animals in the woods would become far more dangerous. However, Su Jin didn’t mention this idea to Guo Yang and the others. If possible, she didn’t want everyone to go. The woods were fraught with peril, and if too many people went, they would quickly become targets for the mutant animals. It would be better to discuss this matter with her family later.

As evening approached, Liang Jiuqing and Zheng Miaomiao arrived as promised, surprising everyone by bringing gifts, with Liang Jiuqing even carrying a small bag of apples.

Although the apples were somewhat wrinkled, Su Jin and the others were deeply moved. These items were now probably more valuable than gold before the apocalypse. The two women were willing to part with them as gifts, which made them feel overly cautious in comparison.

Local Tyrant Gold climbed onto the apples to sniff them, then turned and went off to play in the yard. Guessing that it was accustomed to the fruits from her Space and disdained the ones from outside, Su Jin didn’t say anything. She took the apples, peeled them, and cut them into a fruit platter which she then served.

“My brother has a printer, you know. You could ask to borrow it,” Liang Jiuqing said as she watched Guo Yang and the others intently bent over the table writing product names, with images that were…

Difficult to describe!

Zheng Miaomiao’s mouth twitched. Were these people serious about running a store?

“Right, we didn’t even think of borrowing,” Lin Xiuyuan exclaimed as if he had just seen the light.

Seeing Mao Qiqi looking somewhat disappointed, Su Jin said, “Qiqi, we’ll use the drawings you made for now. If we add more products later, we’ll go ask to borrow yours.”

“You’re all welcome to, anytime,” Liang Jiuqing said happily.

Su Jin and the others didn’t know how much they had helped. The entire family might not express it, but they were truly grateful deep down. Compared to that, lending a printer was trivial.

“By the way, my brother also said he’s spoken with the person in charge. If any of you want to participate in base construction, you can go over anytime,” Liang Jiuqing said. She had been helping out the last few days as well. Although she had no Special Ability, she felt like she was a brick and went wherever she was needed.

As for Zheng Miaomiao, her Water Element Ability had seen much use, whether for mixing cement or muddy clay. She had already spent a day with other Water Element Ability Users working the water. Despite being covered in sweat, she felt a great sense of achievement. Before coming to Su Jin’s house, both had taken a bath to avoid showing up dirty.

“Water Element Abilities are that useful?” Huang Yunxiang asked in surprise, thinking that primarily Earth and Metal Element abilities would be in demand.

“Water Element Ability Users are useful everywhere. Miaomiao hasn’t fought any zombies, but she is already Level Two Water Element,” Liang Jiuqing boasted.

“Can we participate too?” Lin Tianzhen’s eyes lit up. Would that also help upgrade Abilities?

“Of course, you can go if you want to, and come back whenever you’re tired. The Crystal Cores will be given out in full,” Liang Jiuqing said happily, feeling like she had recruited two more people for the base construction.

“If you want to go, you can follow me tomorrow. I’m pretty familiar with the place,” Zheng Miaomiao offered.

The Water Element Ability Users had a good relationship with each other and, for the sake of practicing their abilities, each one of them exhausted their power to produce water every day.

“Thank you, Miaomiao.”

Lin Tianzhen had already made up her mind, and Mao Zhihang would definitely go as well; the couple could go together. It was just Qiqi she was worried about…

“Mom, you and dad go ahead without worries. I’ll be fine with Sister Xiao Jin. You don’t need to worry about me,”

Mao Qiqi was very clever. Just one glance from Lin Tianzhen, and she knew exactly what her mother was concerned about.

“Auntie, don’t worry, Qiqi is so capable, we will take good care of her,” Su Jin assured.

If possible, she wanted to join the base construction as well. The sooner the base was completed, not only would it benefit them, but more people would receive protection earlier. It was just not the right time now. Their shop was not ready, there was Mrs. Su’s situation, and the Beast Core hunting mission…

Liang Jiuqing and Zheng Miaomiao didn’t stay for long because they had to participate in the construction early the next morning. They also had to take Lin Cheng and the others to complete paperwork and get acquainted with the environment, so they left before dark.

When they left, Su Jin took out some bagged dried fruits from the kitchen, thinking that girls liked those. Liang Jiuqing and Zheng Miaomiao wanted to refuse, but Su Jin shut them outside the door with the dried fruits in their hands.

“Just… just accept it…”

Liang Jiuqing was briefly stunned, it was the first time she had been pushed out of a door.

“Well, Su Jin has a special way of giving gifts,” Zheng Miaomiao found it amusing. Was she so afraid that they wouldn’t accept the gifts?

Inside the house, Nie Qing and Lu Guanhai squatted on the ground to see what gifts the two girls had brought. To their surprise, they found a box full of chocolates!

Chocolates, being high in calories, were highly sought after in the Apocalypse. And these two girls had brought them a whole box of them.

“Tsk, tsk, this Zheng Miaomiao, we sure didn’t rescue her in vain,” Nie Qing remarked, remembering her pitiful state at the time of the rescue.

“Yes, these two young people are good,” Lu Guanhai also praised them. They were certainly much better than Jia Sheng’s group in every conceivable way.

Since everyone had eaten too much at noon, they just had a light meal in the evening before getting ready to rest. After making sure all the doors were shut tight, one by one, the family proceeded into the Space, where their grandparents had already prepared fruit and snacks, waiting for them to come and enjoy.

“Uncle, if you go tomorrow and run into someone named Xia Mufei, please take good care of him for me,” Su Jin said while eating a watermelon.

“Xia Mufei? Is he the young man from this morning?” Lin Cheng suddenly recalled. He had felt that Su Jin was quite attentive to that young man.

“Yes, he saved my life before.”

Su Jin hadn’t been too specific about her previous life’s events with her family because she didn’t want to upset them, but she did make it clear that Xia Mufei had died trying to save her.
