REBIRTH OF THE CRESCENT

Chapter 27: Chapter 27 – Arrival of the Cloud Cart

📌 Previously in Chapter 26:

Zayd and his team of village blacksmiths succeeded in building a breakthrough invention: The Cloud Cart — a comfortable, stable carriage designed with Zayd's future knowledge. After four failed prototypes, their final cart rode like silk across stone roads. But celebration quickly met reality — their funds had run dry.

📍 Scene: Al-Qarah, Just Outside the Crescent Corner – Morning

Zayd leaned against the half-painted side of the newly named Cloud Cart, a soft breeze carrying the smell of ash and morning tea. Qadir sat on the step nearby, staring at their now-empty coin chest.

QADIR:

"Victory smells good… until your stomach reminds you it's broke."

ZAYD (half-smiling):

"We're not broke. We're… pre-funded."

QADIR:

"Nice words. Want to feed those to the mule?"

Zayd rolled his eyes but said nothing. That afternoon, he visited a modest brick house near the olive grove, where a white-bearded man welcomed him warmly.

📍 Scene Change: House of Uncle Ghassan – Afternoon

GHASSAN, an old friend of Zayd's father, poured tea for them both.

GHASSAN:

"I remember your grandfather riding into Basra with seven carts of saffron. The whole city smelled of gold."

ZAYD:

"I just need a small loan, Uncle. To get to Baghdad. I believe I can sell this invention… if people see it."

Ghassan studied him carefully — then nodded.

GHASSAN:

"I see your father in you. And I see a storm behind your eyes. I'll give you what you need. But don't waste it on pride. Use it for vision."

📍 Scene Change: Baghdad – City Gates, Three Days Later

Two beautiful white horses trotted proudly, pulling the gleaming Cloud Cart along the cobbled road. Its polished wood reflected the late morning sun. Intricate ironwork lined the edges — forged by Khalaf's steady hands.

Crowds began to pause as it passed. No cart had ever looked like that.

Then came Zayd.

ZAYD IBN SULEIMAN, age 20, stepped down slowly, wearing a finely layered green robe with a gold-trimmed belt, a light turban, and soft leather boots. On his shoulder sat Nimr, feathers glinting silver.

WOMAN (in the crowd, whispering):

"Who is that?"

MAN:

"Some prince from the West?"

CHILD:

"Is that a falcon?!"

Zayd heard them all — and smiled faintly. In Baghdad, appearances were invitations. And he had dressed accordingly. People respected wealth… or the illusion of it.

QADIR (walking beside him, grinning):

"We haven't even opened our mouths and we're already the center of town. If this works, I want silk socks."

ZAYD:

"First we earn silver. Then you can bathe in silk."

📍 Scene Change: Private Room in a Tea House – Evening

Zayd, Qadir, and a hired town crier sat around a tray of figs and almonds.

ZAYD (to the crier):

"You'll walk through the copper district, then the bazaar gates, and finally the public square. I want you to shout this:"

Zayd unrolled a small scroll he had written earlier:

"Behold the cart that rides like the wind and comforts like the cloud! A marvel never seen before! To be auctioned in the heart of Baghdad in two days! Come and witness the carriage of the future!"

TOWN CRIER:

"For an extra dirham I'll pretend to faint after saying it."

QADIR (laughing):

"Do it. Faint twice — once in the spice market, once near the perfume sellers."

Zayd handed over three silver coins.

ZAYD:

"Make sure it spreads."

📍 Scene: Rooftop Overlooking the Bazaar – Night

Zayd stood with Nimr on his shoulder, watching the lanterns flicker across Baghdad. He could hear echoes of the crier's voice already making its way through the alleys.

ZAYD (softly):

"Let them come. Let them wonder. Curiosity is the best merchant."
