Chapter 43: The Prodigious Nim, Part Twelve
{Melisa}
Melisa sat in the Elemental Magic classroom, trying her best to focus on the lecture despite the distraction in her lap.
Isabella had plopped herself down on Melisa's thighs, nuzzling into her neck with a contented purr.
[Ah... Come on...] Melisa thought, but she made no effort to push the girl away.
At first, Melisa had been flustered by the bold display of affection. But, now, she figured that maybe this sort of passive Essence exchange was exactly what she needed to get ready for the day. If Isabella wanted to give her some Essence like this, even if it was so painfully embarrassing, Melisa felt she had no reason to turn her down.
So, despite the stares and whispers from her classmates, Melisa forced herself to relax, letting Isabella snuggle closer as she tried to concentrate on the professor's words.
[Just breathe, Melisa,] she told herself, fighting back the blush that threatened to overtake her face. [It's just a little Essence sharing between family. Totally normal, totally fine.]
Suddenly, the classroom door swung open, and Melisa's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
There, standing in the doorway with an expressionless look on her face, was none other than Raven.
The professor paused mid-sentence, blinking at the interruption.
"Ah, yes," he said, clearing his throat. "Class, I'd like to introduce you to our newest student, Raven Nightsong. She'll be joining us for the remainder of the semester."
Raven bowed quietly, her long, black hair falling forward to obscure her face and the scar over her eye.
"Pleased to meet you all," she said, her voice as soft as usual.
Melisa couldn't help but stare for a while.
As if sensing Melisa's gaze, Raven's grey eyes flicked towards her, locking onto her own. For a moment, they just looked at each other.
Then, without a word, Raven made her way to the empty seat beside Melisa, sliding into the chair easily.
Melisa swallowed hard, suddenly very aware of Isabella's warm weight in her lap and the curious glances of her classmates.
"Um, hi Raven," she whispered, giving a small, awkward wave. "Fancy seeing you here."
Raven just nodded.
"Hello, Melisa," she replied, her voice barely above a murmur. "Originally, I was going to be in a separate class, but as a last-minute decision, I was brought here. I can guarantee you that I did not apply for this class simply just so I could be next to you."
Melisa blinked.
[Everything she says always sounds so... mechanical, hehe.]
Isabella shifted in Melisa's lap, drawing Raven's attention.
Melisa hadn't seen too many emotions show up on Raven's face but confusion was now making its debut.
"Oh, don't mind me," Isabella grinned. "I'm just here so I can give my cousin some moral support. And, you know, the occasional snuggle."
Raven nodded.
"Ah, you are related? Understood."
Melisa felt her face flush, suddenly very aware of how awkward this looked.
But as the professor resumed his lecture, and Isabella's warmth seeped into her skin, Melisa found herself calming back down again.
Soon, as the Elemental Magic class came to an end, Melisa gathered her things, trying to ignore the lingering warmth of Isabella's body against her own.
She stood up, stretching her arms above her head with a small groan.
[Whew, that was... something,] she thought, glancing at Isabella from the corner of her eye. [I'm not used to that level of affection at all, but... Maybe I should get used to it.]
Just as she was about to head out the door, Isabella's hand shot out, grabbing Melisa's wrist.
"Hey, cuz," she purred, her green eyes sparkling with mischief. "What do you say we ditch the rest of our classes today? I know this great little spot at the back of the academy where we can... relax and keep catching up like we had been."
Melisa's cheeks flushed, her mind immediately jumping to all sorts of inappropriate places.
In truth, Melisa was conflicted.
On one hand, she really wanted to pick up where they'd left off. To let her lips get used to the act of kissing.
On the other, the "discovery" Melisa had made was still in the back of her mind. Isabella was cute, beautiful even, but she couldn't just ignore that.
"Melisa." Armia's voice (thankfully) rang out. "A word, please?"
Melisa turned to see the darian girl standing behind her.
Isabella pouted, her grip on Melisa's wrist tightening slightly.
"Aw, come on, darian. Can't it wait? We were just about to-"
"No," Armia said firmly, her orange eyes flashing with something that made Melisa's stomach do a little flip.
Melisa glanced back at Isabella, an apologetic smile on her face.
"Sorry, Izzy. I'll just be a minute, okay?"
Isabella huffed, releasing Melisa's wrist with obvious reluctance.
Then, Melisa followed Armia a short distance away from the classroom, out of earshot of the other students.
Armia crossed her muscular arms, her tail swaying behind her in what Melisa could only assume was agitation.
"Listen," she began, her voice low and serious. "About our project. I was wondering if we could head to your place tonight. What do you think?"
"Tonight?" Melisa found herself nodding. "That's fine with me. We can head over there after classes are done for the day."
Armia nodded curtly.
"Good. I'll see you then."
And with that, she turned on her heel and strode away.
[Always so intense, huh? I wonder what-]
Her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden tug on her arm. She yelped as Isabella dragged her down the hallway, a determined look on the kitsune girl's face.
"Isabella, what are you-"
"Shh, just come with me," Isabella hissed, pulling Melisa into the nearest bathroom and locking the door behind them.
Melisa's heart raced as Isabella backed her up against the wall, her fluffy pink ears twitching with barely contained energy.
"I don't like the way she looks at you," Isabella murmured, her face mere inches from Melisa's. "That darian girl. Armia. It's like she's trying to stake a claim or something."
Melisa swallowed hard, her mouth suddenly very dry.
"I-I don't think that's what she was doing, Izzy. We're just partners for a class project, that's all."
Isabella's eyes narrowed.
"Perhaps, but..." She leaned in closer, her breath hitting Melisa's lips. "Right now, I want you all to myself."
Melisa's fists clenched.
Isabella closed the distance between them, her lips capturing Melisa's own.
But as Isabella's tongue swept into her mouth, teasing and exploring, Melisa found it increasingly difficult to remember why she'd been so reluctant.
She reached up and put her hands on Isabella's shoulders.
"W-We have class," Melisa said.
"I know," Isabella whispered with a smirk. "Just a couple more minutes, cousin. That's all."
