Chapter 83: Blood and Essence
Melisa sat cross-legged on her bed, her crimson eyes focused intently on the parchment before her.
The room was quiet, save for the occasional rustle of paper and the soft sound of her tail swishing against the blankets.
[Okay, let's see...] she thought, tracing a complex spellsign in the air.
"Vini, sana, rejuven," she murmured, feeling the subtle pulse of Life Magic flowing through her fingertips.
Raven had left for her nightly run a few minutes ago, leaving Melisa alone with the notes on Life Magic – and its darker counterpart, Blood Magic.
As she practiced the conventional Life Magic spells, Melisa couldn't help but feel a strange, intrinsic connection to the magic.
It felt... right, somehow.
Natural, in a way that even her prodigious skill with other schools of magic didn't quite match.
[It's like... it's a part of me,] she mused, her brow furrowing slightly. [But how can that be? Nims aren't supposed to have any magical affinity at all. Am I... Is Life Magic my affinity?]
Her gaze drifted to the section of notes detailing Blood Magic spells.
Melisa bit her lip, a mixture of curiosity and apprehension swirling in her gut.
[I know I shouldn't... Raven said these spells require a sacrifice. But...] Her tail twitched nervously. [Maybe just trying out the moves won't hurt?]
Before she could talk herself out of it, Melisa's fingers were tracing the intricate, twisted version of a healing spell. One belonging to the Blood Magic school that assassins would use at times to recover after a fight, usually using the corpse of the person they just killed.
"Sanguine, vita, transfero," she whispered, half expecting nothing to happen.
To her shock, she felt a surge of power coursing through her body.
The air around her hand shimmered with a deep, crimson energy – unmistakably the manifestation of Blood Magic.
[What the-]
And, Melisa's thought was cut short as a wave of dizziness washed over her.
The room seemed to tilt and spin, and she found herself slumping back against her pillows.
[But... how?] she wondered, her mind racing even as her vision blurred. [I didn't sacrifice anything. How did I cast that spell?]
As the dizziness intensified, Melisa closed her eyes, trying to steady her breathing.
The implications of what had just happened whirled through her mind like leaves caught in a storm.
[There's definitely something going on here,] she thought, her determination cutting through the fog of disorientation. [Something about me, about my connection to Life Magic and Blood Magic... I need to get to the bottom of this.]
She managed to open her eyes, her gaze falling on the scattered notes around her. The symbols and incantations seemed to dance and blur, but Melisa forced herself to focus.
[Could it be related to my nim nature? Or is it something else entirely?] Her tail curled around her waist, as if trying to anchor her against the waves of dizziness. [Maybe... maybe I'm drawing the power from myself somehow? But that doesn't make sense... Nim can't generate Essence.
So, what did I sacrifice for this to work?]
As her thoughts churned, Melisa couldn't shake the feeling that she was on the cusp of uncovering something significant.
Something that could change everything she thought she knew about her magical abilities – and perhaps about herself.
But, it was just out of reach.
[I need to talk to Raven about this,] she decided, even as another wave of vertigo washed over her. [And maybe... maybe I should tell Javir too. This could be important.]
---
Melisa stood in Javir's office, her tail twitching nervously behind her as she faced her mentor and Raven.
The air was thick with tension, the gravity of her revelation hanging heavily between them.
Javir leaned forward, her eyes sharp with intense curiosity.
"Let me get this straight, Melisa. You're saying you managed to cast a Blood Magic spell without a sacrifice?"
Melisa nodded, her crimson eyes meeting Javir's gaze steadily.
"Yes, I promise. I know it sounds impossible, but I swear it happened."
Raven, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed, looked skeptical.
"Blood Magic always requires a sacrifice. Always. It's the fundamental principle behind it."
"I know," Melisa said, her voice tinged with frustration. "But I'm telling you, it worked. I felt the power, saw the energy. It was real."
Javir sat back, her brow furrowed in thought.
"This is... unprecedented. Melisa, can you demonstrate for us?"
Melisa bit her lip, her tail curling around her leg.
"I... I'm not sure I can right now. Casting that spell earlier... it took a lot out of me. I feel drained, like I've used up most of my Essence."
[Not to mention the dizziness,] she thought, remembering how the room had spun after her accidental casting.
Javir's eyes narrowed, considering this new information. After a moment, she turned to Raven.
"Raven, could you give Melisa some of your Essence?"
The former assassin blinked, clearly caught off guard.
"I... what?"
Melisa was just as shocked.
"You heard me," Javir said, her tone brooking no argument. "This is important. Melisa needs Essence to demonstrate this phenomenon. You can provide it."
Melisa felt her cheeks heat up.
"Javir, I don't know if that's-"
"It's fine," Raven cut in, pushing off the wall. Her face was a mask of neutrality, but Melisa could see a faint blush creeping up her neck. "If... I suppose I should. For research purposes."
[Oh gods,] Melisa thought, her heart racing as Raven approached. [This is not how I imagined this going.]
Raven stood before Melisa, their eyes meeting in a moment of silent communication.
Then, with an unusual gentleness, Raven cupped Melisa's face in her hands and leaned in.
Their lips met. Normally, Melisa wasn't really aware of the Essence, but given that she was focusing on it right now, she could feel it moving from Raven to her. Then, that feeling was overshadowed by the feeling of Raven's tongue slipping into her mouth.
She closed her eyes, losing herself in the sensation for a moment before remembering where they were and why they were doing this.
Javir watched with slightly flushed cheeks, though her face remained professional.
When Melisa felt she had enough, she gently pulled away from Raven, both of them slightly breathless.
"Thank you," she whispered, and Raven nodded, stepping back.
"Alright," Javir said quietly, her voice cutting through the charged atmosphere. "Now, Melisa, if you're ready..."
Melisa took a deep breath, centering herself.
[Here goes nothing,] she thought, raising her hands and beginning to trace the complex spellsign for the spell she'd cast earlier. Stay connected through My Virtual Library Empire
"Sanguine, vita, transfero," she intoned, her voice steady despite her nerves.
For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Then, suddenly, crimson energy began to swirl around Melisa's hands, coalescing into a pulsing orb of power.
Javir's eyes widened, and even Raven took an involuntary step back.
"By the gods," Javir breathed, leaning forward to get a better look. "It's true. You're actually doing it."
Melisa maintained the spell for a few more seconds before letting it dissipate, the crimson energy fading away like mist in the morning sun.
As soon as it was gone, she swayed on her feet, that familiar dizziness returning.
"Melisa!" Raven was at her side in an instant, steadying her with a strong arm around her waist.
"I'm okay," Melisa assured her, though she leaned gratefully into the support. "It's just... casting that spell takes a lot out of me. More than regular magic, even."
Javir stood, her expression a mix of awe and concern.
"This is... remarkable. Melisa, do you have any idea how you're able to do this?"
Melisa shook her head, her tail curling around Raven's leg unconsciously.
"No idea. It just... happens. But... I don't know, I-I think I might have an affinity for Life Magic in general."
"We need to investigate this further," Javir said, her mind clearly racing with possibilities. "For now, though... Raven, can you take her back to the dorms?"
"On it."
Melisa nodded, still leaning against Raven for support. She couldn't shake the feeling that she'd just opened a door to something much bigger than she'd anticipated.
[What is all this? Why...?]
---
{Raven}
Raven's arm was a steady presence around Melisa's waist as they made their way back to their shared room. The nim girl's steps were unsteady, her tail dragging listlessly behind her as they walked.
[I've never seen her this drained before,] Raven thought, concern etching lines across her usually stoic face. [What is this Blood Magic doing to her?]
As they reached their door, Raven fumbled with the key, unwilling to let go of Melisa even for a moment. Finally managing to unlock it, she all but carried her roommate inside, gently depositing her on the nearest bed.
"Melisa," Raven said softly, kneeling beside the bed. "Are you feeling any better?"
Melisa's crimson eyes fluttered open, a weak smile tugging at her lips.
"Not really," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's like... like all my energy has been sucked out of me."
Raven's brow furrowed, her mind racing as she tried to think of a solution. An idea struck her, and she felt a blush creeping up her neck even as she voiced it.
"Perhaps... some more Essence might help?" she suggested, her grey eyes meeting Melisa's. "It seemed to revitalize you earlier, at least temporarily."
"I..." she began, her voice hoarse. "I mean... it couldn't hurt to try, right?"
Raven's gaze snapped back to hers, a flicker of heat sparking in those grey depths.
"No," she agreed, her voice low and rough. "It couldn't hurt at all."
And then she was leaning in, her lips capturing Melisa's in another breathtaking kiss.
Melisa gasped, her body arching up off the bed as Raven's tongue swept into her mouth, claiming her with a boldness that sent shivers down Raven's own spine.
Raven's hands were everywhere, skimming over Melisa's curves with a hunger that bordered on desperation. Melisa moaned, her own hands tangling in Raven's hair, pulling her closer as the kiss deepened.
And then, just as suddenly as it had begun, it was over.
Raven pulled away, her breathing ragged, her eyes glazed with a mix of desire and something softer, something almost tender.
"Are you..." Raven panted. "Better?"
Melisa nodded, unable to speak past the lump in her throat.
Then, she pulled Raven back down, capturing her lips once more.
