Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Reassignment
Alina tried to fight back, but her hands trembled. 'What's happening to me? she thought in panic. Why am I shaking while holding a weapon? Is it because of Aileen? Has she never shot before?'
"Why are you hesitating?!" Leo snapped sharply. "Shoot them!"
Alina flinched. She wanted to respond, but her tongue felt tied. "I... I—"
"Forget it! Hold on tight, we have to get out of here!" Leo cut her off, not giving her a chance.
Alina cursed herself. In a critical moment like this, she should have been reliable. But instead, her body refused to cooperate.
Leo said nothing more, but the look in his eyes was enough to show his disappointment. Rather than commenting, he stayed focused on controlling the motorcycle, dodging the rain of bullets coming at them. With a sharp maneuver, he veered into a narrow alley. One of their pursuers was thrown off, but the others kept chasing. Suddenly, Leo hit the brakes hard.
"Can you ride this?" he asked quickly.
Alina hadn't even processed his question when Leo had already switched positions.
"You drive, I'll handle them," he ordered firmly.
Alina hesitated for a moment, but this was her chance to prove herself. 'If you want to get closer to Leo, you have to work with him.' Steeling herself, she took control and hit the gas.
Leo sat facing backward, firing at their pursuers without hesitation. As soon as they emerged from the alley, another barrage of bullets greeted them. But Alina stayed focused. Leo, too, showed no fear. With a single shot, he flipped one of the pursuing cars, causing it to explode in a massive blast that blocked the remaining pursuers.
'Aileen can ride a motorcycle? Or is it because she likes Leo? Alina wondered. But you barely know him. Don't get your hopes up.'
However, more pursuers quickly appeared.
BANG!
Alina flinched at the sound of a muffled groan from behind.
"Ugh!"
Leo staggered as a bullet struck his arm. Blood instantly soaked the doctor's coat Alina was wearing.
"Are you okay?!" she asked in panic.
Leo gritted his teeth, still shooting. With one swift motion, he hurled a grenade behind them. An explosion followed, taking out another pursuing car.
For a moment, silence fell.
"I'm fine," he finally said, though his voice was strained.
Alina glanced at the motorcycle's side mirror, her heart pounding as she saw Leo pressing his wound with a trembling hand. Blood kept seeping through his fingers. She bit her lip, feeling both anxious and helpless. The wound looked serious.
Yet, Leo endured. Though his face was pale, he didn't utter a single complaint. His breaths were heavy, but his eyes still held determination.
"We're almost at the new camp. We'll be safe there... the command center will protect us and the patients..." His voice weakened before his body slumped.
"Leo! Hey! Don't pass out!" Alina cried in panic, but there was no response.
Struggling, she tried to support Leo's weight. Her breathing was ragged, but she couldn't give up now.
Thankfully, after what felt like an eternity, they finally reached the military base gates. Alina rushed toward the guards, but she froze when several rifles were raised, aimed directly at her.
"Stop! Show your identification!" one of the soldiers barked.
"We're medical personnel sent by the government for the peace mission! He's badly injured! Please, let us in!" Alina pleaded desperately, fear and exhaustion evident in her eyes.
The guards remained cautious. One of them spoke into a radio, reporting their presence.
"Sir, we have two unidentified individuals claiming to be doctors at the gate."
Silence followed, the only sound was the cold night wind carrying the tension. The guards waited for confirmation from inside the base. Then, a voice finally crackled through the radio.
"Are there any medical personnel still at the old camp location?" someone from the command center asked.
"Yes, Doctor Aileen Monroe and Doctor Leonard Moreav," a nurse inside the base confirmed.
The soldier at the gate eyed Alina more closely.
"Are you Doctor Aileen Monroe?" he asked firmly.
"Yes! And he's Doctor Leonard Moreav! Please, he needs urgent medical help!" Alina's voice nearly broke.
Without wasting another second, the gates swung open. Alina rushed inside, her eyes scanning for anyone who could help.
"Emergency! Someone help! Doctor Leo is injured!" she shouted.
Within moments, medical personnel arrived, bringing a stretcher. They quickly took Leo inside for treatment. Alina collapsed to her knees, overwhelmed by relief.
Lana approached her, concern in her eyes. "Are you okay?"
Alina forced herself to stand, catching her breath. "Yes, I'm fine. How is Doctor Leo?" she asked quickly.
Lana hesitated but spoke honestly. "You have to remove the bullet from his arm. You're the only surgeon here besides Doctor Leo."
"What?! Is the medical team here that understaffed?" Alina muttered in frustration.
Lana studied her closely. "What's wrong with you?"
Alina snapped out of her daze. She couldn't afford to hesitate. Quickly, she headed to the operating room with Nurse Lana. However, once inside, her nervousness returned. Her hands trembled slightly. For some reason, operating on Leo felt harder than a regular surgery. But she had no choice.
'Aileen, focus! Leo could die if you don't act fast! she told herself.'
Taking a deep breath, Alina gripped the scalpel tightly. She prepared to extract the bullet from Leo's arm. With newfound precision and calm, she successfully removed it and stitched him up quickly. The surgery went smoothly, but another problem arose. The blood supply was critically low.
"Doctor, we're out of blood. We used the last of it for other severely wounded patients yesterday," a nurse reported.
'Alina thought fast. What's the point of a successful surgery if he suffers from severe blood loss?'
Memories of Leo saving her life flashed through her mind.
Her resolve hardened. "Take my blood. My blood type is compatible with all types," she said firmly.
"Nurse Lana, finish suturing and bandaging. The rest of you, prepare my blood for transfusion to Doctor Leo."
Without delay, everyone moved according to her orders. Alina sat beside the operating table as a tube connected her arm to Leo's, transferring her blood to save him. Nurse Lana finished her work efficiently. Before long, the procedure was complete.
Leo was moved to the recovery room. One by one, the medical staff left, leaving Alina alone.
She gazed at Leo's unconscious face. "You need to get better soon, Doctor," she whispered before stepping out.
Alina rested in the doctors' lounge, exhaustion weighing her down after everything that had happened. Lana entered, carrying a plate of warm food.
"You seem different," Lana said, scrutinizing her. "Since we arrived, you've been watching over Doctor Leo. Do you like him?"
Alina, who had just taken a bite, froze. Her face turned red. She tried to deny it, but Lana knew her too well.
"I don't like anyone," she refuted quickly.
Lana narrowed her eyes, unconvinced. "You're lying, Aileen. You've never acted like this toward any man. Not even Doctor Adam, who keeps chasing after you."
Alina fell silent, her thoughts drifting to the moment she first entered Aileen's body. Doctor Adam had always tried to get close to her, making her uncomfortable. Only now did she realize Adam truly had feelings for Aileen.
"No, I don't like Adam or Leo," she insisted again.
Lana sighed, crossing her arms. "Just admit it, Aileen. You like Doctor Leo."
Instead of answering, Alina fled. She busied herself checking on the patients Leo had been treating. Meanwhile, a doctor from their team reported something over the phone.
"He survived, but Doctor Leo was injured," they said. "Alright, I'll keep updating you."
As Alina moved through the camp, tending to the wounded, a nurse rushed over with a worried expression.
"Doctor, our tetanus vaccine supply is running low, and we're out of blood. We need more immediately."
Alina frowned. "Have you spoken to the commander?"
"We have, but the situation is tough," the nurse explained. "At the border, supply convoys carrying medicine and food were destroyed, including our blood reserves."
Alina thought fast. This wouldn't be easy. But she had a plan. This place wasn't unfamiliar to her—she knew people who could help.
"Alright, I'll go," she finally said.
Before leaving, she instructed Lana to contact her in case of an emergency. On the way, she felt strange about herself. In her past life, she never cared about saving others. But in Aileen's body, everything had changed.
"You're too kind, Aileen," she murmured. "If it weren't for your body, I wouldn't bother helping these patients."
