Reborn as a Surgeon: The Mafia Queen's Second Life

Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Terror from the Enemy

Alina stared intently at Leo. Outwardly, she appeared calm, but her mind was racing. Leo's question was a trap. If she answered incorrectly, this could be the end for her.

"I'm a doctor," she replied casually, even though her heart was pounding inside her chest. "And I'm just doing my job."

Leo leaned back in his chair, his expression sharp. "Ordinary doctors don't deal with the black market."

Before Alina could respond, a knock on the door interrupted them.

Leo raised an eyebrow. "Come in."

The door opened, and a man in a dark suit stepped inside. His long hair fell past his shoulders, and a faint smirk played on his lips. He didn't look like he belonged in this camp—too conspicuous, too dangerous.

Leo sighed. "Mijan, you always show up at interesting times."

Alina tensed. That name wasn't unfamiliar.

Mijan glanced at her briefly before turning his attention back to Leo. "I have something that might interest you."

Casually, he placed an envelope on the table. Leo took his time opening it and pulled out a few photographs.

One of them showed a man lying lifeless on the floor, his body covered in blood. But what caught Alina's attention was the symbol carved into his chest—a snake coiled around a dagger. Her blood ran cold.

Leo looked up, meeting her gaze meaningfully. "It looks like we have a bigger problem."

Mijan crossed his arms. "And I have a name."

He pulled a small piece of paper from his pocket and placed it on the table.

Alina held her breath as she saw the name written there.

"Aileen."

The world seemed to stop. She looked at Leo, then at Mijan.

Mijan smirked. "You're not alone, Doctor."

Leo slowly closed the envelope. "And it seems we have a lot to talk about."

Alina gripped her knees under the table, her gaze locked on her own name written on that slip of paper. Her throat felt dry.

"What does this mean?" Her voice was hoarse.

Mijan's expression remained enigmatic. "Are you still going to pretend, Doctor?"

Leo tapped his fingers on the table. "I'd like to know too, Mijan. Where did you get this?"

Mijan shrugged. "I have many friends in dark places, Leo. Someone is looking for Aileen. And from what I hear, it's not for a good reason."

Alina steadied herself. "Who's looking for me?"

Mijan's eyes sharpened. "The same people who killed that patient."

Alina's chest tightened. "They… know I'm here?"

"Not for sure," Mijan replied. "But they suspect it. Someone saw a woman resembling you in the black market. And if they confirm your identity, you already know what happens next."

Leo rubbed his temples. "This is getting interesting."

Alina's mind raced, searching for a way out. She knew Vasko had probably already reported the warehouse incident to his boss. If Marco came here, it wouldn't just be dangerous for her—it would put everyone around her at risk.

'I can't let innocent people get caught in the crossfire. But how do I escape without raising suspicion?'

Her anxiety became more evident. Mijan and Leo noticed the shift in her demeanor.

"Are you okay?" Leo asked, his brow slightly furrowed.

Alina forced a smile, despite the turmoil inside her. "Just a little nervous," she replied, trying to sound convincing.

Leo studied her for a moment before saying, "The commander said you're clear of all charges. There were reports about you obtaining medicine and blood illegally, but no solid proof."

"Yeah," Mijan added. "And I'm sure that report came from Marco's allies."

Alina grew more uneasy. If Mijan knew this much about Marco, she had to be careful. She still couldn't be sure whose side he was on.

"Alright, I understand," she said, glancing at her watch. "It's late. I should get to my shift."

Without waiting for a response, Alina quickly stood up and left, leaving Leo and Mijan still on edge.

After she was gone, Mijan gave Leo a knowing look. He poured himself a glass of wine and asked casually, "How's your search going?"

Leo didn't answer immediately. He stared at his glass, his expression dark.

"Have you found the killer of your beloved yet?" Mijan continued before taking a slow sip of wine.

Leo remained silent. A heavy sigh escaped his lips before he finally admitted with frustration, "I can't find Alina's murderer."

Mijan looked at his friend in surprise. This was the first time he had seen Leo truly in love with someone.

"I don't get it," Mijan finally said. "Why not just find another girl? Come to think of it, that doctor earlier seemed to like you."

Leo gave a faint smile, but his eyes remained filled with sorrow.

"Alina is dead," he said quietly, his gaze distant. "But she still lives here." He placed a hand on his chest, as if trying to calm the pain that never faded.

Mijan finished his drink and left without another word. Leo stayed behind, letting his thoughts drift back to the past. To the first time he met Alina.

That night, the rain poured heavily. The sky was pitch black, the streets barely visible.

Leo had just left the mercenary headquarters after handling an emergency call. But on his way back, something caught his eye. A girl, lying motionless by the side of the road.

He approached. After checking closely, he realized she was still breathing—barely. Her wounds were severe, blood mixing with the rain, staining the asphalt. Without hesitation, Leo lifted her and took her home.

That night, he tended to her wounds. And when she finally regained consciousness, the first thing she did was point a gun at him.

"Who are you?!"

Leo merely smirked. "Just someone trying to help."

Leo's thoughts were shattered when his phone rang. Quickly, he picked it up and answered.

A tense voice came through. "Doctor, bad news! Our weapon and supply storage has been attacked! Many of our soldiers are down!"

Leo immediately stood up, his jaw tightening, his expression sharp. "Who's attacking?"

"We're not sure yet, but they're fast and highly organized. We need reinforcements now!"

Without wasting time, Leo rushed toward the door. But before he could step out, Mijan stopped him with a firm hand.

"Are you sure this is just a random attack?" Mijan asked seriously.

Leo narrowed his eyes. "What do you mean?"

Mijan tossed the envelope with the photos onto the table. "The attackers might be the same people looking for Aileen."

Leo was silent for a moment. He knew there was more to this than just a raid on their supplies. If this really involved Aileen, then their enemies were far more dangerous than he had imagined.

"In that case, we need to move fast," he murmured.

Without hesitation, Leo and Mijan left the room. They knew this wasn't just about losing weapons and food—it could be the beginning of a much bigger war.

Meanwhile, elsewhere…

Alina ran through narrow alleyways, her breath quick and uneven. Something was wrong. She had felt eyes on her all night.

'Have they found me?'

Cold sweat trickled down her temple. If her enemies had really tracked her down, then nowhere was safe.

As she turned a corner, a hand suddenly yanked her into the shadows. She nearly screamed, but a firm hand covered her mouth just in time.

"Don't move," a low, familiar voice whispered.

Alina tensed, her eyes widening as she recognized the man in front of her.

"Vasko…"

The man smirked. "Did you really think you could run from me, Aileen?"
