Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Blossoms Fade the Gloom
Asuma made his way to the memorial grounds, as thoughts of Kurenai were doing relays within his mind.
'Shinku Yuhi was as skilled in swordsmanship as he was with genjutsu, if I'm not mistaken." Asuma thought to himself. 'Maybe I should hope for Kakashi to be there. Wouldn't it be ironic if Kurenai becomes more skilled in swordsmanship than the son of the White Fang? I can almost see it now.'
He found amusement in the shame he imagined Kakashi would feel in such a situation. Maybe the humor was a bit too dark since he couldn't help but have thoughts that leaned towards the aura of his destination.
'Kurenai won't be part of the hidden debuff of this world that all strong kunoichi will suffer (or have suffered) an extremely tragic fate. Was the Sage of Six Paths behind that nearly conceptual rule? Tsunade, Uzumaki Mito, Uzumaki Kushina, Sakura, and Hinata. Ooof. Then you have Yugito Nii, the host of Matatabi and Fu, the host of Chomei. Being a jinchuriki is already rough, and being one as a kunoichi? Curse level debuff that seems to even effect the ones around them. The two prior hosts of Kurama are evidence of that.'
'Konan and Temari were both greatly troubled by emotionally volatile yet equally stubborn redheads (Nagato and Gaara). Gaara's mother and Lily Potter were definitely on the same wavelength. Mei Terumi, though not a redhead, had trouble finding someone after a successful upheaval of the Fourth Mizukage. The Mist Village is just tragic overall, with the kill all the skilled ones vs. kill the clan killers vs. blood thirsty murder maniacs vibe. On top of that they had the "Seven Swords Battle Royale" that never stopped...'
'Last, but certainly not least, we have Kaguya, the Mother of Chakra, Ninjas, and Lunacy. No, it's not funny. Her husband betrayed her out of fear for her power. I wouldn't be surprised if he was ancestor to Danzo. Hagoromo and Hamura had to trap her in the moon (oh dear Luna) because she was too powerful to be defeated. That and they were worried about other 'full blooded' Otsutsuki invading. Not to mention the havoc that her children caused and are still causing *cough*Black Zetsu*cough*.'
'This cradle of madness disguised as a world is rife with savagery.'
*Hence why your soul was beckoned to this world, despite whatever bidding you may have had, Oh Great One.*
'...Just call me Jon Snow, why don't you?'
*I don't believe this gravitas is what's necessary for cheering someone up, now is it?*
Although he let the comment pass as though it were dust in the wind, he still acknowledged the fact that the system had the right idea. Being dramatic to clear away the gloom, he arrived at the memorial site in a shroud of smoke and leaves.
'Ah, nothing helps clear up the mood like visual effects. The Body Flicker is seriously underrated.'
As he looked in Kurenai's direction, she also noticed his arrival.
"Someone's going to be back in the village for awhile," Kurenai spoke with a subtle smile, despite the slight look of melancholy in her eyes.
"Aww, what gave it away?" he asked, returning the subtle smile with a grin of his own.
"Oh, nothing. Just the scent of ramen. Past the eye watering smell of the cigarette smoke."
"Um...about that...I'm glad it was only the cigarette smoke that did that, and not a look at my rough mug." Asuma joked lightly as he ashed what he was smoking. His eye twinkled as he saw her tuck her long and luscious curly black hair behind her hair. They nearly glowed as brightly as a lighthouse when he saw her stare at her feet for a moment to repress her giggle for a brief moment.
"Wanna talk over some shochu?" he asked. Ideas of ways to lift her mood ran through his mind. Even though the system quest was there as incentive, it was something he genuinely wanted to do.
She agreed by proceeding to head in the direction she would normally go to get drinks. As he strolled with her, he noticed the smell of perfume she wore. It blended well with the scent of the plum tree and violets in the background. The scenery complimented Kurenai so well he regretted not having a camera with him.
It did inspire an idea that formulated quite quickly thanks to the view he just witnessed. He plucked a fair amount of violets, then he tucked away the petals he plucked from all of them. He broke off a sizable piece of a branch of the plum tree.
Even with Kurenai looking at him as though he was quite the wondrous oddity, he continued to expand upon the thought in his mind. He took a kunai and, after imbuing it with wind chakra, he whittled away at the branch. He was quite grateful for all the times he chose to watch DIY videos from TheatreMirror back on Blue Star. He was efficient with molding his idea into shape due to the dexterity and focus of two life times within his possession.
The end result was a craft that could be called a sandalwood comb reminiscent of those from the Far East in his past life. Due to his care, it was far more detailed than ones that would be commonly found for sale in Konoha. The spine of the comb was embellished with carved images of plums, violets, and plum blossoms. He blew away the shavings and used his rough master of earth chakra as a substitute for sandpaper.
As a rare finishing touch, he reached in his pocket for the cluster of violet petals. Using his understanding of the system bestowed skill 'Storm Wall', he used his wind chakra to create an orb that served a purpose similar to a blender.
A/N: NOT the Rasengan. The concept for Storm Wall is completely and utterly different. The first distinction being that the center of the orb is hollow. Hence the name, Storm Wall.
The resulting essence that he derived from the petals was smeared onto the comb he sculpted out. By the time the arrived at Kurenai's favorite place for drinks, he was finished with his craft. The result was an ornate comb, with a fairly subtle scent made from the smell of violets and the wood of the plum tree.
"Here, something to keep you from tangling your fingers in your hair." Asuma handed over his masterpiece to Kurenai.
'Quite the good thing I was able to remember her favorite flower being violets. Maybe I should get some plums as well? I faintly recall hearing somewhere that plums pair well with shochu.'
As he saw her bundle her hair into a bun in order to place the comb as decoration in her hair, he had the impulse to imitate the sound of a howler monkey. Simply out of sheer elation at the success of his subtlety.
'Shogi matches with Shikaku paid off.' he thought. 'Another idea came to mind as well.'
"I imagine if you use the perfume you wear as genjutsu, your enemies would be just as entranced with you as I am," he uttered. Much to his surprise, he recieved a system notification afterwards.
*'Enlightenment of the Wind' has been triggered. A-grade 'Genjutsu: Violet Plum Blossom' has been created as a result. Effect: The intended target(s) will suffer from the sensation of extreme intoxication: severe dizziness and nausea. Violet petals will also cloud the vision of the target.*
*Would you like to learn this skill or receive it in a scroll? Do note, if you learn the skill, you may not necessarily be able to teach it. In the scroll, you may not be able to learn it, however it is easier to teach to others. Which do you choose?*
'Scroll, of course.' As he quickly dismissed the system for fear of Kurenai thinking he was distracted.
He also withdraw the from the system to bestow it to Kurenai as a second gift. She accepted the scroll and read it, looking at it in surprise.
"Wow , this is an A-Grade genjutsu! And it's not chakra intensive. Who helped you make this?"
"Aww, come on! I put a lot of thought into that. I don't need you coming back with cuts and scrapes because you were short a good jutsu." Asuma bashfully responded. 'That bro-con Itachi probably can't hold his liquor with that lung ailment he has.' A slight glimpse of his mean streak from his past life arose.
They shared small talk about the recent events in the village, as well as brief moments of appreciated silence between clowned drinks. The glow of the sun setting the stage for the evening gave Kurenai a certain ambience that he greatly appreciated by simply watching in silence.
He escorted her home as he reveled in her company, simply going imagining in his mind the ways in which he can utilize his skills from both lives. He went into deeper thought as he headed to his own residence, which was not too far from Kurenai's.
'Hidan and Itachi are troublesome opponents. They carry red clouds on their robes, yet the clouds I see carry no blood within them. They may only be tinted that way by the setting sun. Quite feeble that tint is, too. I have to become strong so that the clouds are never darker than the skies they travel.'
