Chapter 415: Chapter 414: The Situation in "LV-426"
The Alien universe designated as "LV-426" had undergone significant changes. The human colony on Lethe Moon (LV-426), once plagued by xenomorph outbreaks, had been transformed into a solid forward outpost for the Human Empire thanks to the joint efforts of Gary "Cockroach" Sanderson's Unified Reconnaissance Unit and the Space Wolves' 14th Company.
However, the xenomorphs lurking deep within the dense, primeval rainforest continued to pose a substantial threat to the colony's four million settlers. Until the mechanical army and bio-weapons had completely cleared the rainforest, the settlers could only take refuge in towns guarded by Auxiliary Forces and the Space Wolves to ensure their safety.
Based on the current rate of progress by the mechanical army and bio-weapons, it was estimated that the rainforest could be entirely cleared within three to four Earth months. After all, these mechanical and bio-units knew no fatigue.
It had been two Earth months since the space gate had opened on Lethe Moon. Although the Unified Recon Unit and the 14th Company of the Space Wolves had acted swiftly during the height of the xenomorph crisis, effectively stabilizing the situation and cutting off all external communications from the colony, "LV-426" Earth had still sensed abnormalities on Lethe Moon.
As a colossal military-industrial complex, Weyland-Yutani was far more interested in Lethe Moon's situation than the Colonial Marine Corps. This was because their research teams had unearthed ancient ruins on the moon and successfully extracted large quantities of facehugger eggs in a dormant state.
In the colony's towns, Weyland-Yutani had also conducted human-xenomorph experiments in company facilities and underground labs, which directly laid the groundwork for the catastrophic outbreak.
To conceal the experiments and ensure someone else could take the fall if things went awry, Weyland-Yutani deliberately manipulated a local cult. Through bribes to the cult's leadership and lies to its followers, the company convinced them that the terrifying xenomorphs and facehuggers were, in fact, "messengers of God." Followers were led to believe that being infected by a facehugger was an honor, signifying divine approval and ascension to the "Kingdom of God."
This belief spread rapidly within the cult, and thousands of crazed members willingly sacrificed themselves, providing Weyland-Yutani with a wealth of experimental data.
Remarkably, a few researchers in the company even genuinely believed the theory that "xenomorphs are creations of God."
To these extremists, xenomorphs were perfect organisms: able to adapt to extreme environments, possessing astonishing vitality, and, most enviable of all, seemingly defying the natural limitations of life.
Even though humanity in "LV-426" had already extended its average lifespan significantly and overcome most terminal diseases, the gap between a long life and immortality remained insurmountable.
It was worth noting that before Weyland merged with Yutani, Peter Weyland, the founder of Weyland Corporation, had invested all of the company's technological resources in his quest for immortality. He only managed to extend his own life to 105 years before dying at the hands of an Engineer.
With such an ambitious leader, it was no surprise that Weyland-Yutani's upper management and researchers harbored their own desires for eternal life.
They also deeply envied and resented the androids created by their company.
Weyland-Yutani's androids were designed to serve humanity, much like Atlas' synthetic companions. They came in military, civilian, and even "companion" models.
However, the gap in technological quality between the two was staggering.
Most notably, Atlas' synthetic companions had achieved widespread adoption without a single incident of malfunction or harm to humans. In stark contrast, Weyland-Yutani's androids frequently caused injuries and malfunctions, shaking investor confidence and periodically tanking the company's stock price.
Fortunately, as a massive military-industrial complex, Weyland-Yutani had the resources to mitigate these crises. Whether by paying off victims, deploying covert "physical solutions," using media channels to spin narratives, or distracting the public with unrelated scandals, the company always managed to contain the fallout with minimal long-term impact.
Despite their flaws, Weyland-Yutani's androids still inspired fascination among the company's leadership and researchers, primarily for their apparent "immortality."
When live xenomorph samples became available, the extremists on Lethe Moon's research team began to harbor dangerous ambitions.
The half-human, half-xenomorph statues unearthed in the ancient ruins further fueled their delusions. These extremists truly believed that harnessing the xenomorph's power could transform them into "immortal gods."
(Note: The ruins were not of Engineer origin, as the Alien universe features several "lesser-tier" civilizations beyond the Engineers.)
However, as the extremists conducted increasingly inhumane live experiments, they inadvertently allowed xenomorph worker drones and soldiers to escape.
This chain of events ultimately led to the full-scale xenomorph outbreak on Lethe Moon.
Throughout it all, Weyland-Yutani's corporate headquarters remained fully aware of the crisis unfolding on Lethe Moon.
Not only were they aware, but they actively sought ways to exploit the chaos, hoping to extract even greater profits and technological breakthroughs from the disaster.
For the company's core executives and major shareholders, the four million settlers on Lethe Moon were nothing more than disposable assets—a vast testing ground for their experiments. With such a rich supply of "test materials," they could gather extensive experimental data.
Their ultimate goal was to develop xenomorph-based bio-weapons, turning a hefty profit for the company while also attempting to break through the limits of human mortality for their own benefit.
To this end, Weyland-Yutani dispatched two privately armed vessels and 600 elite mercenaries—its corporate task force—to Lethe Moon.
While this deployment might sound small, it represented a formidable force within the Alien universe.
For instance, in Aliens (1986), the Colonial Marines often struggled with limited resources and personnel, with entire rescue missions handled by a squad of fewer than twenty soldiers.
By comparison, Weyland-Yutani's task force was heavily armed, complete with specialized researchers and androids, as well as two warships each 600 meters long.
Their mission was clear:
Gain control of the Cerberus system (an unmanned orbital station loaded with nuclear warheads) to enforce a total lockdown of Lethe Moon. Escort the researchers and androids to the surface aboard Cheyenne dropships, allowing them to observe the xenomorphs as they decimated the colonists and marines. Study how the xenomorphs evolved and consolidated dominance over a planetary ecosystem.
However, interstellar travel in the Alien universe, even with military-grade ships, required months or even years. Journeys to distant colonies or resource-rich but underdeveloped planets could take over a decade.
This is why both military and civilian spacecraft in the Alien universe are equipped with cryo-sleep chambers: to allow their crews to hibernate during long journeys.
It took over 50 Earth days for Weyland-Yutani's task force to travel from Earth's moon to Lethe Moon.
In that time, the Unified Recon Unit and the Space Wolves' 14th Company had already fortified Lethe Moon into a critical Imperial outpost within the LV-426 universe.
The xenomorph threat had been eradicated, and the settlers had returned to normal life.
Even the Cerberus system had fallen under Imperial control, and the 14th Company had fully deployed its fleet.
The 14th Company's fleet consisted of four Paris-class frigates, eight Fides-class frigates, and four modified Selené supply ships. These vessels boasted excellent technology, mobility, defense, and carrying capacity, enhanced with a limited amount of Forerunner technology.
Their flagship was an Autumn-class heavy cruiser.
Originally designed as the UNSC's next-generation cruiser, the Autumn-class had become a mainstay of the Human Empire after the UNSC's assets were absorbed.
With a length of 1.5 kilometers and a width and height of 450 meters each, the Autumn-class was powered by nuclear fusion engines and enhanced slipspace drives. Capable of traveling 1,200 light-years in 24 hours, it combined exceptional firepower, mobility, and survivability.
When Weyland-Yutani's two 600-meter armed vessels finally entered Lethe Moon's orbit, the task force members emerging from cryo-sleep were greeted by a fully operational Imperial fleet.
The sight of the towering 1.5-kilometer-long flagship, surrounded by numerous smaller warships with their weapons trained on them, sent chills down their spines.
Fighting an entire fleet?
Impossible.
Even against the Colonial Marines, Weyland-Yutani had absolute confidence. But against this Imperial fleet, they stood no chance.
Faced with this overwhelming display of force, the task force unanimously chose to surrender.
Their lofty goals—gathering research data, breaking the shackles of mortality—were forgotten in the face of immediate survival.
The Space Wolves' 14th Company dispatched Thunderhawk gunships to board the Weyland-Yutani vessels.
The 600 mercenaries, researchers, and androids were swiftly captured, becoming prisoners of the 14th Company.
This turn of events made Captain Logan Sigurd of the 14th Company keenly aware that Lethe Moon's existence was on the verge of being exposed to "LV-426" Earth's official organizations.
Unwilling to take any chances, Logan left two Paris-class and four Fides-class frigates to guard Lethe
Moon while personally leading the fleet's main force toward "LV-426" Earth.
