Chapter 417: Chapter 416: "Aerial Combat" and the Long-Awaited Drop
As soon as Logan finished speaking, he gave the opposing side no opportunity to respond. Laughing loudly, he waved his hand, forcefully shutting down the holographic screen beside him and abruptly ending the communication with the "LV-426" human leadership.
The dissolution of the screen symbolized the sealing of the "LV-426" leadership's fate.
As Logan's laughter subsided, the bridge of the Autumn-class cruiser fell silent, with only the hum of machinery filling the space.
"Proceed as planned," Logan commanded, his tone calm and firm.
Breaking the silence on the bridge, he shed his earlier air of unruly arrogance and continued, "Instruct the shipboard AI to seize control of LV-426 Earth's Cerberus System immediately. Ensure all military installations and armed spacecraft in near-Earth orbit are neutralized in the shortest time possible."
After a brief pause, Logan added, "Notify the 2nd and 3rd Assault Platoons, the Company Guard, the Auxiliary Forces, and the Helljumper units. They are to join me in launching an immediate strike on LV-426 Earth's capital.
All other command and support units are to remain on standby and maintain heightened vigilance, ready to respond to any contingencies."
"Yes, Commander!"
The bridge crew responded in unison and promptly set about executing the orders, returning the bridge to a state of organized chaos.
Logan nodded in satisfaction at their efficiency, then strode purposefully out of the bridge, heading toward the drop bay of the Autumn-class flagship.
Clad in his massive Cataphractii-pattern Terminator armor, every step Logan took radiated a palpable sense of power and authority. His towering figure resembled the embodiment of war itself, destined to dominate the unfolding battle.
Shortly thereafter, Logan arrived at his designated drop pod, settling in and calmly awaiting the start of the "long-anticipated" assault.
For him, this was merely routine—a well-rehearsed rhythm of war deeply ingrained in his being.
Despite his relatively young age, Logan was a battle-hardened veteran with exceptional combat experience. His instincts were sharper than most, allowing him to seemingly "blunder" into advantageous situations that often turned the tide of battle.
Meanwhile, over 30,000 Auxiliary Forces and more than 3,000 Helljumpers from the 14th Company had been fully prepared for their assault and drop the moment the fleet exited slipspace.
As Logan's orders were relayed, the 14th Company's fleet sprang into action like a finely tuned war machine.
Thousands of Phantom IV fighters, Whiteleg Sparrows, and unmanned carrier aircraft swarmed out of their respective motherships, joining the fleet as it rapidly approached LV-426 Earth.
The Cerberus Defense System, programmed to protect Earth's orbit, attempted to retaliate by locking onto the approaching fleet and preparing to launch missiles.
However, at the very instant the defense system activated, the smart AI supporting the 14th Company fleet had already hacked into its core, taking complete control of the Cerberus System.
As a result, all targeting locks and missile launches were forcibly aborted. The once-imposing defense network was reduced to a mere decoration, powerless to stop the 14th Company's relentless advance.
The Colonial Marines' 20+ warships in orbit, seeing the Cerberus System fail to mount any expected counterattack and realizing their defenses had been compromised, were thrown into temporary disarray.
The fleet commanders and captains quickly grasped the technological disparity between themselves and the 14th Company, but with no other options, they hastily regrouped and prepared for the inevitable confrontation.
The Marines launched their available fleet of EVAC-3 atmospheric-space fighter jets to engage the 14th Company's swarms of Phantom IVs, Whiteleg Sparrows, and unmanned fighters.
However, their numbers were woefully insufficient—barely a tenth of the 14th Company's air power.
This stark imbalance was due to the limitations of Alien-universe human spacecraft, which were generally smaller, ranging from 300 to 500 meters in length, and had restricted hangar capacities.
The EVAC-3 fighters were primarily designed to support ground-based Marine operations, making them ill-suited for a full-scale aerial confrontation against the air superiority-focused 14th Company fleet.
Nevertheless, the EVAC-3 was considered the pride of the Colonial Marines. As one of the most advanced aircraft in the Alien universe, it outperformed its closest rival, the Mig-730 of the "Human Progress Alliance," in many respects.
The EVAC-3 was capable of carrying a large payload of munitions, excelling in both air-to-ground and air-to-ship missions. It also featured a unique cryo-stasis module, which could preserve the pilot's life in emergencies, significantly increasing survival rates during prolonged combat or critical situations.
When released, the EVAC-3 demonstrated impressive agility and maneuverability, showcasing its status as a cutting-edge fighter jet in the Alien universe.
However, even the pinnacle of Alien-universe technology proved utterly inadequate when faced with the 14th Company's superior technology.
The Phantom IV and Whiteleg Sparrow series, equipped with Forerunner-based advancements, created an overwhelming technological gap, leaving the EVAC-3 helpless in comparison.
In this battle, the 14th Company's air force was the undisputed "King of the Skies."
The aerial combat erupted suddenly. While the 14th Company fleet refrained from engaging in direct ship-to-ship artillery duels, the Colonial Marines' EVAC-3 fighters were swiftly overwhelmed by the Phantom IVs, Whiteleg Sparrows, and unmanned drones.
The EVAC-3 pilots barely had time to lock onto targets, let alone fire, before being annihilated by the relentless firepower of Gauss spike cannons and metallic hydrogen missiles.
Boom! Boom!
The dark expanse of space between the two fleets was soon illuminated by streaks of brilliant blue and white projectiles—each one a deadly blade cutting through the void.
The resulting explosions of metallic hydrogen detonations resembled hundreds of miniature suns bursting into existence, lighting up every corner of the battlefield.
In mere seconds, the EVAC-3 pilots were consumed by these "miniature suns," their lives extinguished alongside their fighters.
If other Imperial legions, such as the Blood Angels, Salamanders, or Ultramarines, had led this operation, they might have taken a more "merciful" approach.
For example, they might have aimed to disable the EVAC-3s' engines with precision strikes, rendering the pilots incapable of further combat rather than outright killing them.
After the battle, the legions' rescue teams could have attempted to save the stranded pilots, showcasing the Empire's benevolence while minimizing unnecessary casualties to foster goodwill and legitimacy.
The Space Wolves, however, had no such inclinations.
Known as "barbarians" by their peers, they cared little for diplomacy.
Logan Sigurd, ever pragmatic, understood the Empire's doctrine: minimize unnecessary human casualties during consolidation, but the definition of "unnecessary" was entirely at the discretion of the on-site commander.
Logan believed in securing a swift and decisive victory, shattering the enemy's resistance as quickly as possible.
He also reasoned that disabling the EVAC-3s' engines wouldn't necessarily guarantee the pilots' survival. The loss of engine power could compromise life-support systems, dooming the pilots to suffocate in the cold silence of space long before any rescue efforts could reach them.
Given the choice between prolonged suffering and immediate death, Logan deemed the latter a more merciful option.
After the annihilation of the EVAC-3 fleet, the main battle between the two fleets began, though the outcome was never in doubt.
The 14th Company required only one round of secondary cannon fire and a volley of standard missiles to dismantle the Colonial Marines' defensive formation.
The Marines' warships stood no chance against the overwhelming firepower and precision of the 14th Company fleet.
One of their carriers became a primary target, its engines deliberately disabled rather than destroyed. Logan saw value in capturing the crew and utilizing the vessel for Imperial purposes.
In just over ten minutes, the Colonial Marines' orbital defense line was completely broken.
The 14th Company's fighter squadrons accelerated toward the two large orbital stations equipped with fixed artillery and missile launch silos.
Simultaneously, hundreds of Pelican transports, Albatross dropships, and Thunderhawk assault craft followed suit, preparing for boarding operations.
These transport vehicles carried not only Auxiliary Forces but also Space Wolves tactical squads, tasked with storming the remaining Marine warships and orbital stations to secure total victory.
For the Marines trapped aboard their stations and ships, despair began to set in.
Many had initially placed their faith in the Cerberus System and their defensive installations, hoping they could turn the tide.
But as they faced the 14th Company's elite warriors—especially the genetically enhanced Astartes and the serum-enhanced Auxiliary Forces—they would come to know the true meaning of terror and helplessness.
Having broken through Earth's orbital defenses without suspense, the 14th Company fleet began dispersing, deploying ships to designated airspace zones.
The Autumn-class flagship, as the fleet's centerpiece, detached from formation and positioned itself ominously above the sunlit side of North America.
Then, whoosh-whoosh!
Hund
reds of drop pods were launched from the flagship's bays, each containing Helljumpers, Space Wolves, Tyrants, and combat mechs.
The pods streaked through the atmosphere like meteors, hurtling toward the surface at incredible speeds.
As Logan's pod descended, the sprawling capital city on the eastern seaboard of the Americas came into view through his observation screen.
He also noticed a swarm of intercept missiles rapidly closing in on their trajectory.
Grinning wildly, Logan's voice boomed through the comms:
"Hahaha! Wolves, let's show these humans how real warriors wage war!"
