Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Blade That Cuts Everything
The deck of the Baratie was stained with blood, echoes of battle still lingering in the salty sea breeze. Zoro lay wounded, his swords scattered around him. Luffy knelt beside his fallen friend, his expression a rare mix of concern and determination.
Don Krieg, emboldened by Mihawk's departure, barked orders to his crew. "Finish them off! The Baratie is ours!"
Luffy's eyes flashed with resolve. Standing tall, he reached down and picked up one of Zoro's swords. The weight felt foreign in his hands, but his grip was steady. He turned to Zoro, who managed a weak nod of approval.
"I'll borrow this for a bit," Luffy said, his usual grin absent.
Facing Don Krieg, Luffy closed his eyes momentarily, focusing his Observation Haki. The chaotic noises of battle dulled, leaving only the rhythmic beating of hearts, the subtle shifts in movement. He could sense every breath, every intention.
Krieg charged, his spiked armor glinting menacingly. Luffy sidestepped effortlessly, his body fluid with the grace of the Marine Six Styles. Using Soru, he vanished from sight, reappearing behind Krieg in a blur.
Luffy raised Zoro's sword, channeling his newfound understanding. "Zoro... I think I get it now. It's not about the blade. It's about the intent."
He slashed at Krieg, the blade humming through the air. At first, it seemed ineffective, but a heartbeat later, Krieg's massive armored shoulder plate slid off, cleanly severed. The crowd gasped—the sword had cut through steel.
After momentarily retreating, Luffy found a quiet spot beside Zoro, who was watching with half-lidded eyes. Luffy held the sword horizontally, his fingers brushing the blade.
"You taught me something without even realizing it," Luffy murmured. "It's not about brute strength. It's about the will to cut... and the will not to."
Zoro managed a faint grin. "Idiot... that's the essence of swordsmanship."
Revitalized by this revelation, Luffy rejoined the battle. Don Krieg, now furious, unleashed his full arsenal—poison gas, explosive spears, and iron-clad punches. But Luffy was a whirlwind of precision. Using Geppo, he soared above Krieg's attacks, and with Rankyaku, he sent slicing air blades toward Krieg's defenses.
In their final exchange, Krieg lunged with his spiked fist, but Luffy met him head-on. He didn't dodge. Instead, he swung Zoro's sword with all his focused will, cutting through Krieg's armor and weapon simultaneously.
Krieg collapsed, defeated, his ambition shattered along with his steel.
As the dust settled, Luffy returned Zoro's sword, placing it gently beside him. "Thanks for the loan."
Zoro chuckled weakly. "Guess I still have a lot to learn if my captain can teach me about swords."
The crew gathered, tending to their wounded. Sanji, leaning against the railing, lit a cigarette. "You idiots are going to get yourselves killed. But damn, that was impressive."
Luffy turned to him, grinning wide. "Hey, wanna join my crew? We could use a cook."
Sanji exhaled a plume of smoke, contemplating. The Baratie floated peacefully again, the sea stretching infinitely ahead, promising more adventures, more battles, and unbreakable bonds.
