Reborn Heiress: Rising as the Queen of a Business Empire

Chapter 13: Brothers United

The emergency Taylor family meeting convened that evening in the farmhouse's spacious living room. Ashley had called all three of her brothers home, and the gravity of the situation was evident in their faces as they gathered around the old oak table that had witnessed countless family discussions over the years.

Jack sat with his military bearing intact, his jaw set in the determined line that had served him well in combat. Eric had driven up from Philadelphia, still in his surgical scrubs, exhaustion evident in his eyes but his mind sharp as ever. Ben had abandoned his latest art project to be here, his usually gentle demeanor replaced by a protective intensity that surprised even Ashley.

Lucas—Alexander—sat slightly apart from the family circle, his presence a stark reminder of how much had changed in just a few days. Catherine had positioned herself at the head of the table, looking every inch the corporate warrior she'd once been.

"All right," Ashley began, her voice steady despite the churning in her stomach. "I think it's time everyone knew exactly what we're dealing with."

She laid out the situation methodically: Eugene's legal attack, Amelia's threatening phone call, Marcus Sterling's involvement, and the deeper conspiracy that connected her mother's past to her present troubles.

Jack was the first to speak. "So let me get this straight. This Sterling bastard has been nursing a grudge for twenty-five years, and now he's using our sister's success to get revenge on Mom?"

"That's the simplified version," Catherine said. "But yes, essentially."

Eric leaned forward, his analytical mind already working through the implications. "What kind of resources are we talking about here? Legal fees alone could bankrupt most people."

"Sterling's worth approximately eight hundred million dollars," Lucas said quietly. "He has interests in pharmaceuticals, real estate, defense contracting, and about a dozen other industries. He also has connections in federal law enforcement, the state legislature, and half the federal judiciary."

"Jesus," Ben muttered. "No wonder Mom ran."

"But Ashley isn't running," Jack said firmly. "Are you, Ash?"

Ashley met each of her brothers' eyes in turn. "No, I'm not running. I've built something here, something real, and I'm not going to let anyone take it away from me."

"Then we fight," Jack said simply. "All of us."

"Jack, you don't understand what you're up against," Catherine protested. "These men have unlimited resources and no moral boundaries. They'll use everything—legal manipulation, character assassination, physical threats—"

"Mom," Eric interrupted, his voice gentle but firm. "With all due respect, we're not the same people we were twenty-five years ago. And Ashley isn't you."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean she's not facing this alone. You had to run because you had no support system, no one to watch your back. But Ashley has us."

Ben nodded, his artistic sensibilities giving way to practical determination. "Eric's right. We're not just going to stand by and watch our sister get destroyed."

"But what can we actually do?" Catherine asked. "Sterling has lawyers, political connections, unlimited funds—"

"And we have something he doesn't," Ashley said, a plan beginning to form in her mind. "We have the truth. And we have each other."

She stood, moving to the window that looked out over the rolling hills of the Taylor farm. "Lucas, you said Sterling has interests in multiple industries. What if we could prove that those interests are connected to illegal activities?"

"You'd need access to financial records, insider information, witnesses willing to testify—"

"Which we have," Ashley said, turning back to the room. "Mom, all those documents you saved from your time with Blackwood Industries—they're not just about Thomas, are they?"

Catherine's eyes widened as she understood Ashley's thinking. "No. Marcus was Thomas's partner in everything. If there's evidence of money laundering, bribery, or worse in those files..."

"Then we have the ammunition we need to fight back," Ashley finished. "But we need to be smart about this. Sterling won't just roll over if we threaten to expose him."

"What do you have in mind?" Jack asked.

Ashley turned to Lucas. "Your father—does he know about Sterling's current operations?"

"Some of them. But Thomas has been trying to distance himself from Marcus for years. He's gotten more cautious as he's gotten older."

"Could he be convinced to cooperate?"

Lucas considered this. "Possibly. If he thought it would protect his legacy, or if he believed he could cut a deal to save himself."

"And Amelia?" Ashley asked. "What's her role in all this?"

"She's Sterling's inside source," Lucas said. "She's been feeding him information about your business operations, your family's vulnerabilities, your plans. But she's also expendable—Sterling will sacrifice her the moment she becomes a liability."

Eric leaned back in his chair, his medical training evident in his systematic approach. "So we have potential evidence of criminal activity, a possible witness in Thomas Blackwood, and an inside source who doesn't realize she's being used. What about the immediate threats?"

"The legal attack through Eugene can be handled," Ben said. "I've been managing the business finances—every transaction is documented, every source of funding is legitimate. Their case is built on lies."

"But the publicity will still damage Ashley's reputation," Catherine pointed out.

"Not if we control the narrative," Ashley said. "What if instead of playing defense, we went on the offensive? What if we turned this into a story about a young woman entrepreneur being attacked by powerful men who can't stand to see her succeed?"

Jack grinned. "I like it. Turn their own tactics against them."

"It's risky," Eric warned. "If we miscalculate, if they have something on us that we don't know about—"

"Then we'll deal with it," Ashley said firmly. "But I'm not going to spend my life looking over my shoulder, afraid of what powerful men might do to me."

Lucas stood, his decision made. "I'm in. Whatever you need—access to Blackwood Industries' records, intelligence about Sterling's operations, connections in the business world—I'll provide it."

"You're sure?" Ashley asked. "Once you choose sides, there's no going back."

"I chose sides the moment I realized what my father really was," Lucas said. "And what you really are."

Catherine looked around the table at her children and the man who had become part of their fight. "If we're going to do this, we need to be prepared for anything. Sterling won't hesitate to use violence if he feels cornered."

"Then it's a good thing we have Jack," Ben said, attempting to lighten the mood.

"And it's a good thing we have each other," Ashley added. "Sterling might have money and connections, but we have something he can't buy—family loyalty and the truth."

"So what's the plan?" Eric asked.

Ashley moved to her briefcase, pulling out a legal pad covered with notes and diagrams. "Phase one: We fight the legal attack while simultaneously launching a media campaign to control the narrative. Ben, I need you to work with our accountant to prepare a comprehensive financial audit that proves all our funding sources are legitimate."

"Done," Ben said.

"Eric, can you use your connections in Philadelphia to find us a top-tier legal team? Someone who's not afraid to go up against Sterling's lawyers?"

"I know a few people who might be interested," Eric confirmed.

"Jack, I need you to coordinate security for the farm and our business operations. If Sterling is willing to use violence, we need to be ready."

"Consider it handled," Jack said.

Ashley turned to Lucas. "And I need you to reach out to your father. See if he's willing to cooperate in exchange for immunity or a reduced sentence."

"What about phase two?" Catherine asked.

"Phase two is where we stop playing defense and start going for the kill. We expose Sterling's entire network, from the money laundering to the political corruption to the 'accidents' that have been eliminating his problems for decades."

"And if that doesn't work?"

Ashley's smile was cold as winter. "Then we get creative. But one way or another, Marcus Sterling is going to learn that the Taylor family doesn't back down from a fight."

The meeting broke up with each family member having their assignments. As the others filed out, Lucas lingered behind.

"Ashley," he said quietly. "Thank you. For trusting me, for giving me a chance to make this right."

"Just don't make me regret it," Ashley replied. "Because if you betray us now, you won't have to worry about Sterling anymore."

Lucas met her gaze steadily. "I won't betray you. I promise."

Ashley nodded, then turned to stare out the window at the darkening sky. Storm clouds were gathering, and she could feel the electricity in the air that promised a violent tempest.

But she was ready. They all were.

Let the storm come.
