Chapter228-Karos Bro, Willing to Sell That Rabbit Pet?
Chaos City!
Thanks to a pre-prepared Tier-9 flying artifact set as a spatial anchor, Velen and the others teleported instantly through a Spatial Portal, arriving directly in a luxurious inn suite within Chaos City.
After asking the rest of the group to go out for a stroll, Velen finally turned his attention to today's refreshed special system item.
Today's Special Item: Shadowthorn * 10,000 plants
Shadowthorn: A dark magic plant found in the upper-plane universe, incredibly rare and dangerous. Just a single shadowthorn contains enough dark magic to plunge even a peak Level-9 Ascended awakener into endless darkness, causing mana disarray and severing all vitality!
"Hiss—!"
So brutal?
Velen sucked in a sharp breath. The special item today was simply beyond terrifying.
Staring at the ten thousand plants of shadowthorn lying silently in his system inventory, Velen fell deep into thought.
"How the heck am I supposed to use this stuff?"
Knock knock knock!
Right then, a sudden knocking interrupted his train of thought.
"You are?"
Velen opened the door to find a black-haired young man with a clean buzzcut standing at the threshold.
Perched on the youth's shoulder was a plump rabbit that appeared obedient at first glance but radiated an eerie aura. Its eyes weren't the usual red but glowed with a sinister violet light—giving off a chill that crept down one's spine.
The hell?
He's got a rabbit too?
Velen couldn't help but recall the rabbit living in his own fortress.
"Hi, I'm Karos, ranked tenth on the Rising Magi Rankings," the buzzcut youth introduced himself with a bright smile.
"Oh." Velen replied flatly.
He was still busy thinking about how to splurge today's special item and had no energy to bother with Karos.
…??
That's it?
Just an "oh" after learning who I am?
Karos felt a pang of frustration. He was a top contender in the Rising Magi Rankings, and yet Velen reacted with such indifference upon hearing his name? A little surprise would've been nice. Or even a mildly excited "Wow!" would do!
Instead… nothing.
Karos suddenly fell silent.
His self-confidence took a direct hit.
"You came to see me for something?" Velen asked bluntly after seeing the guy still standing there speechless.
"Ah, nothing special, really. Just wanted to come by and make friends," Karos explained with a smile. "You know, the whole point of this event held by the Hall of Magi is to let the elites from the Rising Magi Rankings network and get to know each other."
"I see," Velen nodded slightly. His gaze drifted to the creepy rabbit on Karos's shoulder. "That rabbit of yours seems rather... unique?"
"Haha!" Karos immediately perked up. "Not gonna lie, as someone who specializes in dark magic, this rabbit is actually one of my most trusted partners."
"I've placed a number of dark magic curses all over its body. Any ordinary person or awakener who gets close will be instantly corroded by those curses."
"Karos, you damn brat!"
Suddenly, an angry voice echoed in Karos's mind. "You're calling me a cursed rabbit?! Your whole family's cursed!"
"I told you to find a proper host body, and you stuck me in a damn rabbit?!"
"Hell's bells, why did I even choose a reckless punk like you to inherit my legacy?!"
Karos froze, though he kept a straight face.
The voice belonged to a powerful soul sealed within the rabbit—a former peak Ascended awakener who had once dominated the Singularity Battlefield, surviving eight Thunder Tides. Though now reduced to a soul fragment, he was still Karos's mentor, guiding him in mastering dark magic.
Meanwhile, Velen's eyes lit up with a devilish idea.
Buy that rabbit at a high price, trigger a money-burning event, and cook it using all ten thousand shadowthorns. Who knows? Maybe something absurdly terrifying like a "Dark Gourmet Creation" would emerge from it.
That would solve the shadowthorn problem perfectly.
The rabbit on Karos's shoulder suddenly shivered uncontrollably.
It had a chilling feeling… like something awful was staring at it.
"Karos bro, would you be willing to sell me that rabbit pet of yours?" Velen asked seriously.
"...Huh?"
Karos was stunned. He never expected Velen to say something like that out of the blue.
What did he just say?
You want to buy my mentor?!
That rabbit contained his mentor's soul!
Although the guy was now trapped inside a rabbit, his soul's power was still formidable!
"Velen, are you also a practitioner of dark magic?" Karos asked, trying to make sense of this bizarre request.
"Nope," Velen answered without hesitation.
"Then why would you want to buy my rabbit?" Karos was getting more confused.
"To stew it. Make a very special dish."
...Wut?!
Both Karos and the rabbit were stunned.
Rabbit: Are you seriously gonna buy me just to make me into soup?!
That's unforgivable!
"This guy's way too cocky! Karos, let me at him—I'm gonna teach him a lesson he won't forget!"
As both Karos and his rabbit-mentor were about to strike…
Velen calmly retrieved a bunch of shadowthorn from his system inventory and placed it on the table. "Look, I just happen to have the perfect 'seasoning' right here. Now all I need is that special 'ingredient.'"
"Holy crap!"
"Shadowthorn!!!"
Karos and the rabbit's soul both exclaimed in shock upon seeing the eerie dark plants laid out on the table.
"You little bastard! My dear disciple! Hurry up and sell me to him!"
"If I can absorb the dark magic curses in all that shadowthorn, my soul power will definitely skyrocket! I might even ascend again!"
The rabbit's mentor was suddenly fired up.
But then…
They watched in horror as Velen began taking out more shadowthorn.
One hundred. Five hundred. Three thousand…
Eventually, he had placed all ten thousand plants on the table.
Karos and the rabbit were completely dumbfounded.
You've got to be kidding me.
Ten thousand shadowthorn?!
This plant only grew in the most dangerous parts of the Singularity Battlefield. Even during his prime, Karos's mentor had spent centuries there and only managed to gather less than twenty shadowthorn in total.
But Velen?
He casually dropped ten thousand of them on the table like it was nothing.
Who the hell is this guy?!
Could he be some hidden master of dark magic disguised as a spendthrift?
"Oh god, Karos, my sweet disciple… mentor loves you so much. Please, do not sell me to that madman!"
"This guy's insane! Ten thousand shadowthorn curses stacked together? Even my soul can't handle that!"
"The overlapping curse energies would become apocalyptic! Even Ascended-level beings would have their souls shattered in an instant!"
The rabbit-mentor was now trembling violently, overwhelmed by the dense sea of shadowthorn surrounding him. Even his voice carried uncontrollable fear.
A moment later, the trembling ball of fluff leapt off Karos's shoulder and scurried behind him, those violet eyes brimming with sheer terror.
If he were to ingest that mountain of cursed plants… death would be mercy.
