Chapter 21: (RBT) Chapter 21: I have to fight Lord Lucifer?
Lucifer, who had declared victory, then brought Ascalon and Manfred back to his mansion.
The backyard of the old mansion was a desolate wasteland, which was perfect for training. Furthermore, inside Lucifer's old home, there were numerous books and scrolls that he had collected as spoils from the war. In their free time, the two children could study and gain additional knowledge here.
Upon pushing open the door to his home, Ascalon and Manfred, who followed him in, instinctively felt a sense of unease. Especially Ascalon... for her, who had lived her life in the wild mountains, stepping into someone else's territory was an extremely unwise decision.
"Alright… nevermind the first rule, forget the last rule... in short, welcome to hell, kids! Go find a room for yourselves on the second floor. I'll bring up the pillows and sheets later."
Considering that Ascalon and Manfred were just ordinary Sarkaz and still very young, the considerate Lucifer had borrowed daily necessities and food ingredients, as well as other resources, from Teresa. She had generously approved his request, and someone should be delivering them shortly.
And perhaps it was because Teresa and Tracy placed great importance on these two children that they even approved rare seasonings like salt and sugar for Lucifer, giving the noble reason: No matter how hard it gets, we can't let the children suffer.
Ascalon and Manfred each chose a room. After a brief survey of the layout, they found it to be surprisingly simple, which somewhat changed their opinion of Lucifer… they had thought the house of a Blood Demon would be as messy as a rat's nest.
"Once you're ready, follow me. I'll take you through the newbie tutorial first."
Lucifer led the two to his King's Treasury. Most of the items inside were spoils he had obtained from the war. There were various types of weapons and armor, as well as magic staves and other armaments.
"Choose an exclusive weapon that you like."
Although most were secondhand, they were at least genuine military-grade equipment, several versions better than the scrap metal the people of Kazdel used.
Ascalon and Manfred glanced at each other, then began to choose from the dazzling arsenal. Manfred selected a long, sharp sword. Even though it wasn't quite suitable for his current build, a Sarkaz child was already quite strong, and he could still wield a sword meant for an adult soldier skillfully. As for Ascalon, she chose two sharp daggers. The short and compact weapons were more convenient for her to engage enemies in close-quarters combat.
At this moment... the gears of fate had begun to turn.
"Come on. Let's go to the backyard for some practice first."
Lucifer grabbed a tachi from his King's Treasury and then led Ascalon and Manfred to the backyard of the old mansion. Although most Blood Demons didn't need weapons in battle, at most just holding a staff and pretending to be a main damage caster, the leveling method of a Blood Demon clearly couldn't be applied to Ascalon and Manfred. Fortunately, Lucifer had always dreamed of being a Berserker and a tachi-wielder, so he had no weakness in close combat and wasn't the type of player to let go of his mouse and keyboard the moment an enemy got close.
"Before I start teaching you how to level up hand-to-hand, I must first test what your paper stats look like. Even if you're going to become a noble archmage in the future, you can't be so weak that you get captured the moment an opponent gets close, because that is not suitable for us."
Although Lucifer's words were rather abstract, Ascalon and Manfred could still understand. The physical capabilities of the Sarkaz were fundamentally top-tier. Even a Sarkaz mercenary who was a mage could still exchange a few blows when forced into close combat. They couldn't let this power go to waste.
"Manfred... you're first. Step forward and fight me."
"Ah? M-me, sir?" Manfred pointed at himself in disbelief. He knew Lucifer wanted to test if his fundamentals were solid, but… to fight Lord Lucifer directly?
I have to fight Lord Lucifer?!
"If you're a coward, don't do it. But if you're going to do it, don't hesitate… Or I can send you back now, and have Teresa find you a stable government job instead."
"…No, sir. I'll do it!" Manfred bit his lip, took a step forward to stand before Lucifer, and gripped the hilt of his sword tightly with both hands.
Lucifer held his sword with one hand and drew it from its scabbard, tossing the scabbard aside without a care. Seeing this, Manfred took a deep breath, then raised his longsword and charged at him with all his might. Although Manfred had almost no combat experience, among Sarkaz of the same age, his power, speed, and talent were more outstanding than anyone else's.
Manfred, who charged in, gathered all his strength and swung his longsword at Lucifer. However, Lucifer merely raised his sword and easily parried Manfred's attack back. The force of the impact even sent him staggering back two steps.
Lucifer didn't give Manfred much time to breathe or adjust his form. He raised the sword in his right hand high and then brought it down in a simple slash.
Manfred quickly came to his senses and instinctively raised his sword to block.
CLANG!!
The swords clashed, sending bright sparks flying. The blade of Manfred's sword vibrated intensely, but Manfred himself was in no better shape…
"Ugh!" Lucifer's seemingly light attack contained a force that made Manfred unable to keep his footing. He fell to one knee, the longsword nearly slipping from his grasp instantly.
Seeing Lucifer prepare to raise his sword again, Manfred's survival instinct flared. He didn't dare to delay, scrambling away clumsily to create distance from Lucifer. As for Lucifer, he chose not to pursue… he had already assessed Manfred's current level and flaws.
"Pant… pant…" Manfred gasped for air, now drenched in sweat. After just two exchanges, he already felt his strength starting to fail him. If Lucifer had pursued to land another blow, he might not have had enough strength to even block or run.
"Your mentality isn't enough… and your experience is still too little," Lucifer gave his verdict. "You don't understand any techniques. Your limited experience meant that just the impact from the parry was enough to make you lose your balance. Your mentality is also unstable… when facing me, you felt immense pressure, so you subconsciously wasted a lot of stamina for no reason, causing you to tire out quickly."
"But it's alright… these things can be honed over time. You did very well."
Lucifer extended a hand to help Manfred up. Although the people he usually dealt with were god-tier beings or stat monsters, or at the very least, those with special mechanics and talents like Warfarin and Ermengarde, that didn't mean he looked down on Manfred. After all, the other party was just a child not yet eighteen. Moreover, Manfred's talent was not shallow. When he grew up in the future, he would certainly be stronger than Warfarin and Ermengarde. Even if not on par with Tracy or himself, he would not be inferior to the other princes.
After finishing his critique of Manfred, Lucifer turned to look at Ascalon, who had been silent all this time.
"Next… it's you… Ascalon."
